After a couple years of playing DND I finally experience my first real character death.

Ive had characters die before but those were usually in bs campaigns that I didnt care about all that much.

But this man, I made him sometime in June, Klaudius Spineflame Wizard 9,Focused Specialist Illusionist.

Heres how he died.

"We had just gotten in a fight with some elves and our characters were pretty beat up, unfortunately, at that time some ogres that we had tricked our way past caught up with us. The ogres wanted us to kill the leader of the elves and bring them the leaders head.

My wizard being Chaotic Good wasnt going to let that happen, so he created a Major Illusion of the Elf head to give to him. Major Illusions give off the sounds, smell and feel of whatever they are imitating. So we gave the leader of the ogres the head and my wizard concentrated on the image until we were past the ogres fortress. Now the elves attacked us anyway because they needed to defend their lands. Once we dealt with them, the ogres caught up to us because the image had vanished. They started throwing rocks, but from a distance so there was huge minuses.

My DM hadnt really expected us to be hit by any of them. Except he rolled a nat 20. On my wizard who was down to 3 hp.

The total damage of the boulder thrown was 46, there was no saving me."

Sigh, I guess in this instance you could actually say "Rocks Fall my character dies"

It really sucks too because this is the first character ive made from 1 - 9 which took us about 8 Months of gaming.

Most other characters ive played in campaigns were usually one shots, or campaigns that only went a few sessions before dissipating, or were high level campaigns where we normally wouldnt earn enough exp to level up.

I know level 9 is enough WBL to get a resurrection, but it just doesnt feel right you know? I mean I know DND is a game and all, but saying "Oh I died better get 10k to res me" just feels.....wrong.

I love the character but I kind of want him to stay dead. Because I feel it would disingenuous to just resurrect him willy nilly. Id feel it would break immersion, break roleplay and just feel like a cheap fix, it would also lesson the consequences of death and make it feel like it has no meaning.

I mean sure, he would lose a level, but he would catch up quickly because hes a wizard and the exp calculators would grant him more exp when we solve encounters because hes a lower level.

*sigh*

I just felt like I should share this with you guys. Klaudius meant a lot to me, I really put a lot of effort into his character and having him die sucks, but having him die and then come back like nothing happened I feel would suck even more.

So thats my story of my first real character death and quite honestly im rather shaken. I feel like I honestly lost someone important.

Sucks to hear that man. Though I've never had a character die (though I have come uncomfortably close), I tend to invest a lot, and become quite attached, to my characters, so I can imagine (though granted, only imagine) how much that sucks. And I get the feeling of not wanting to just be brought back, because it not only sets a bad precedent for cheapening character death, but makes your character's death seem unimpact-full.
However, upon Crake's post in this topic (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?384930-Your-favorite-character), it got me thinking about your case: why not make it impact-full? Why not, before the next session, sit down, talk with your DM, and see if you can a suitably interesting way for your character to be brought back to life could be arranged. Preferably something with strings attached, one of those hooks you cannot ignore until something meaningful is done about it.

Mmm, maybe.

I think a legacy would be a better way to memorize the character rather then a "true res with caveats"

Ill have to talk to my dm.
