Start as variant human fighter, take heavy armor master and choose armored style, take fighter 2 for surge, then switch to any wizard type. Now you play a full plate and shield wearing caster with 21 ac and action surge. :)

The build is good if you want to be a non-squishy wizard, but it does have a couple drawbacks:

1) You'll always be 2 levels behind on your spellcasting progression.

2) Action Surge is nice if you want or need to cast two spells in one turn, but this does mean that you will eat through your more limited spell slots more quickly.

Delay your spell casting by two levels, feel inferior to other casters most of the time, contribute less to fights than your other party members, lack the hit points to effectively frontline, and encourage your DM to throw reflex saves, strength saves, grapplers, and heat metal at you.

You are also late to the party; people mentioned this build back in beta.

Wow somebody went hardcore negative today. xD and you must have some horrible DM's if they specifically target you just cause they dont like your build or whatever you were implying.

Guess taking a level of war cleric or light cleric is better then, get prof in heavy armor and acess to healing spell, more cantrips and only delays new spell levels by 1 lvl with same amount of slots?

Yeah, that sounds better.

Dwarf (+1 WIS for easier multi-class and no STR req for heavy armor). War/Tempest/Life/Nature suggested. Light does not get heavy armor. I prefer tempest or life. Life domain spells (CW and Bless) are amazing.

Just go mountain dwarf and get medium armor if you want a tanky wizard.

Fighter2 is, like Rogue2, a good dip for many classes. Whenever you're dipping, though, make sure you're comfortable with the idea of delaying your feats, ASIs, and extra attacks.

There's no need to knock the OP for that. A fresh set of eyes can often catch things which the rest of us missed.

Let's not forget the need to take War Caster if you want to cast spells while wielding a shield.

You can only cast one spell per turn,( or one spell plus one cantrip)

That would be true if Action Surge granted you a Bonus Action, but it doesn't. It grants a second Action.

yeah the general consensus for the tanky heavy armor wizard is Dwarf (hill imho, dat hp) cleric (any domain with heavy armor) for the first level, then switching to wizard for the rest of the way. and most people that mention this link it with abjuration wizard.
