Using the Musicus rating system (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ViqLSEN67mmd2Lo_OJ-H5YX0fccsfI97kFaqx7V1Dmw/pub) I tried to port Pathfinder's Gillmen (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/races/other-races/uncommon-races/arg-gillmen) to D&D 5e.

It's a rough outline right now - not sure if there really should be any subraces, but I wanted to let a PC play this as a rogue without being too unoptimal (he was purely concerned about flavor and didn't ask for the dex)

Gillmen
Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 2.
Age. Gillmen Mature slightly slower than humans do, reaching adulthood around 20 and living for around 150 years.
Alignment. Generally Neutral
Size. Medium
Speed. 30 ft
Bond Breaker. You have advantage on all Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws against magic not cast by an Aboleth, but have disadvantage against magic cast by an Aboleth.
Amphibious. Gillmen can breathe air and water.
Water Dependent. A gillman’s body requires constant submersion in fresh or salt water. Gillmen who spend more than 1 day without fully submerging themselves in water risk internal organ failure, painful cracking of the skin, and death. You gain a level of exhaustion for every four hours after the original 24 hours.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common, Aboleth, and Aquan.
Weapon Proficiency. The Gillman is naturally proficient with Trident

Raider
Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 1.
Natural Swimmer. Swim speed 30ft.

Stats = 3, Bond Breaker = 2, Amphib = 1. Water Dependent = -.5. Natural swimmer = 1.5, Weapon prof = .1 (4 are worth .5)
7.1

If the water dependency is too specific you could use the slimy trait from PF: Gillmen have a thin coating of natural oil that keeps their skin from cracking even without water. However, this natural oil also makes such gillmen particularly susceptible to flames, and they gain vulnerability to fire.

Any suggestions?

Bond Breaker is completely worth the 2 point, and is very, very, swingy. Weak vs. Aboleths, strong vs anything else.

Water Dependent is also swingy; the drawback is nonexistent at sea or on the coast, a money drain in the city, only a nuisance in forests (especially rain forests), crippling in steppe and savanna terrain aside from riverbanks and deadly in continental hot deserts.

It's also exactly what gnomes receive (except the Aboleth part) so balance shouldn't be a concern.

I don't plan on having it massively hinder the player - there are rivers and lakes all over.
