Umbrius

The warming air of another spring lifts your spirits this morning as you continue the travel along the New Road toward Oakhurst, the small town you had heard about a few nights ago. The intrigue still lingered in the back of your mind as you rounded the last turn in the road and came upon the fist glimpse of the town just past a small knoll. The closer you come, you can hear the sounds of the blacksmith's hammer pounding out a familiar tune and the smells of fires burning lightly in the northern breeze. It's nearly noon, now, and it looks as if the town is coming to life.

Just ahead, you see a knight, of sorts, using the sign post to balance himself as he adjusts straps on his leg gear. He stops momentarily and glances back to you before a set of children come running up to him to grab his attention. Just inside the city limits, you can see the millings of town folk; a heavy set lady carries a large basket of white sheets from a doorway towards the center of town, a window of a second story opens to let the breeze ruffle the coverings.

Theoban

Dawn came early again today, though only slightly later than it has the last few days since you had been traveling with the merchant Opherus. Not that he wasn't pleasant enough company, but it did take some liberties with heavier grunt with you in tow. But, a small price to pay to help the elderly man along in his journey to this town of Oakhurst. He had talked a great deal about the new boom in economic growth that was sure to come to this town most of the way here for the last few days. He even mentioned something a great deal that had been struck with landowners in the area, though, you could tell he always quickly changed the subject after mentioning.

Regardless, your sleep was nice for the straw bed you had received as payment from Opherus and the smell of biscuits rising in the kitchen below in the Ol' Board Inn was enough to stir you into at least starting the day in the right direction.

Cassandra

Holly's words still ring in you ear, "Traveling alone is never a good idea."

She always had an opinion about whatever it was you were doing, though. The travel really had been easy enough, though. The southbound part of the New Road was easier than most of the roads you had traveled recently, but the sights were nothing to write home about. The Ashen Plain was...well..simply that; ashen and plain.

The early morning dew was already gone by the time you found the rooftops of the small town in the distance ahead. The sight of the Northern part of this Oakhurst town was nice see, even if meant your work was just getting started. The rumors of the ancient citadel was enough to get you started on the journey, but that was simply it; a start.

Melanie

The idea of the those goblins, and the nerve they had coming to your village was absurd to you still. The fact they offered some ruse about a magical fruit was even more idiotic still. It was something that just didn't happen; goblins were not ones to trade or barter, especially NOT with elves.

Thankfully, no one minded you leaving a few days ago, regardless of your intention. Sure your father would mind if you were injured, but he had always faith in you that you would return unscathed. But really, with Blob on your side, what could go wrong?

Besides, Oakhurst was a quiet little town, even by human standards. It should be no trouble getting more information about this goblin "magic fruit." You may even be able to catch the fresh biscuits at the Ol' Board Inn.

Mortimer

Noon was soon approaching as stopped to adjust your gear just outside of Oakhurst. With one hand on the New Road sign post, your ear catches something behind you coming along the road. Looking back over you shoulder, you see and elderly man with white hair moving along the road with shat seem to be quite a heavy load on his back.

More sounds come from in front of you as two children come running towards with their faces full of life and excitement.

"OH IT'S ANOTHER KNIGHT!!" The little boy shouts, as if you were hard of hearing.

"This one is much shorter than the other. Look at the swords, though." her had points to your side, "He has two blades. Why do you carry two swords, sir knight? Are you not very good with either?" Her eyes meet yours with the humbling and questioning look.

Walking into the town, Umbrius Maro can't help but wonder: "It looks like such a normal place, these rumors, though, do they have merit? Umbrius slows his pace, taking the time to examine the town and it's people, What are they about?

Approaching the Knight, Maro reaches a grizzled hand to tap him on the shoulder. "Excuse me, good
Ser, could you direct me to the Inn?"

Theoban takes his time over his breakfast. From what I've heard, there should be no trouble finding work here, he reflects.

Finishing, he heads out to look around.

Melanie just stands around outside the Ol' Board Inn for a little while, caught in indecision. She could go in, get the biscuits, and possibly even gather some information on the attempted goblin scam, or she could not do that and avoid the anxiety of walking into a room unannounced, even if it was technically a public place.

Blob, to his own merits, just patted her forehead with one of his forelimbs and gestured slowly towards the door."Go."
'Well that solves that then' she thinks as she pushes the door open and walks into the Inn to the scent of fresh biscuits, mentally bracing herself for people to stare at her antennae.

Cassandra walks into the small town. Awed by the sights of a blacksmith working on a piece of steel.

So that's where the knight's royal swords come from. She mused to herself. She was tempted to watch him work for awhile.

No.... no... I have things to do. She stated, throwing back several glances to the forge.

Hmmmm.... If I was an adventurer.... Where would I find allies? She mumbled to herself once away from the tempting forge. She racked her brain for the old bed-time stories, father would read to her.

Ah right. An inn, or Tavern. I wonder if there's a correlation between alcohol and the risking of lives. Cassandra said clapping her hands as she looked around for the closest inn.

Mortimor kneels slightly and smiles at the children, That's what the bad guys say. You aren't villainous are you? Haha! As the older man touches his shoulder he turns to address him, I've only just arrived. Maybe our friends here can point us in the right direction. Would you like some help with that? Mortimor takes the man's baggage if he offers, then asks the kids Could you show us where the local Inn is?

Umbrius shakes the man's hand and smiles kindly at him. Thank you for your offer, good Ser, but if I didn't carry my own baggage, I'd go soft! And we wouldn't want that, now would we? Umbrius turns his gaze to the children and smiles warmly at them whilst his new knightly companion is inquiring about directions.

Umbrius & Mortimer

The children giggle to each other as you both look to them. The little boy nods and points a little down the worn road that leads straight through town, "There, with the sign just above the door." He grabs a hold of the knight's hand and yanks had in the direction.

"NO! I'll show them!" The girl grabs a hold of your hand Umbrius and yanks harder still and you both find yourself in the middle of an impromptu race of sorts.

As you look toward the direction you are being pulled, you could sworn you saw a thin young girl seemingly distraught about finally going in the doorway of the inn. Though, it is hard to really discern what intentions are as you are "escorted" through town.

Not 20 feet in, and a door opens just as you pass, "Charles, Sallie!" The two children immediately release you two and spin towards the door with their hands tucked behind them, almost as if they were at attention, "Leave those men alone and go and find your father!"

Almost in unison, "Yes Ma-Ma." They giggle again as they scamper on towards the inn. The little girl stops for a moment and looks back the two of you, waves and then points at the door of the inn. She looks back to her brother and bolts toward him trying to catch up.

From the door way, the owner of the directives steps forward into the door frame,"Many apologies gentlemen. They...well I guess I shouldn't apologies for children being children then, should I?" She is tall, lean and just muscular enough for you to recognize the strength she carries. She is wiping her wet hand son her apron as she speaks. "Are you new to us here?"

Cassandra

The blacksmith never pauses from his as he clangs down on a red hot slab of steel before him. He does catch your eye for a brief moment and a nod, of sorts, seems extend a greeting. You can see a younger boy with him as he works carrying an arm full of wood and placing near an iron stove to the side.

As you look about town, you can see a few signs dangling from doorways displaying various services offered. Ahead, near a well in the center of town, you spot two children, a boy and a girl, running past other people in you direction. The girl stops, though, suddenly, and waves to someone or something behind them and then points at a building before resuming the chase.

You can barely make out the words on the faded sign from this far away, the universal symbol for inn is still recognizable. Rushing around the two children shout out, "PAPA! PAPA!" Listening back you can hear the blacksmith slow his pelting of iron to a half cadence as you move forward.

Melanie

As expected, most eyes fall you in a moments notice. The waitress that pauses just a little too long, the elder man at the bar a little too early, but none usually speak so suddenly as the large, light haired human seated at a table closest to the door.

Theoban

The waitress had just left when the door swung open and young...girl...ish...person...came through. You could sense the tense environment unfolding immediately. Behind you, back behind the bar where the early drunk sat, you can hear the shufflings of feet and the hinged door open. Hopefully everyone keeps a cool head to themselves.

Cassandra awkwardly returned the greeting, seeming unsure of what exactly she was supposed to do.

Cassandra chuckles at the sight of children being full of energy.

They reminded her of her sister, when she was younger. Sis always wanted to go into the courtyard and play.

Cass always wanted to read.

She continued moving, reaching the inn door. She sighed, then extended her hand to the door.

Standing up straight after being bent over by the children, Umbrius turns to address the woman. Ah, yes. I just arrived. Umbrius Maro, traveling mage. He says, extending a hand for the woman to shake.

I heard rumors of magical happenings here in Oakhurst. Can you attest to those?

Mortimor chuckles heartily at the older man's jest, Fair enough! You look fit enough. It's strange to be called Sir without being addressed by my full title. Sir Gossilar, at your service. The little boy grabs Mortimor's hand and begins tugging him along.

Before long Mortimor and the older man are addressing the children's apparent mother, he turns a curious eye upon the old man as he introduces himself. A mage? I've not met many mages, in fact, only one. The court mage in my home kingdom. Mortimor wipes off his hands and graciously offers his hand to the woman in greeting, Hello Ma'am, Not to worry about the children, spritely and jovial as they should be. I'm also new to town, just arrived in fact. I've heard rumors of missing twins actually, do think there could be a connection, Maro?

The reaction Melanie got certainly could have been worse, and she was thankful that it wasn't. Stepping out of the way of the door she turns to the man who had addressed her and, slightly confused, replies "Ah... hello."

After the lull that follows stretches on for a full second she adds "I'm sorry, have we met?" whilst offering her hand.

Umbrius & Moritmor

The lady's demeanor changes with a slight squint to her eyes. She shakes both of your hands with a hardy, firm handshake as if you were just measured there in the street. Leaning forward just slightly and in a quiet, even tone, "You two have heard of our troubles from so far away? Well, seems bad news does travel fast. It seems you both have questions that can be answered by the Mr. Leng, our mayor. He'll be happy to know-" She pauses momentarily as her eyes focus behind your backs.

You can hear the footsteps approaching behind as the voice calls out, "Rassla, is everything ok here?" You can see even stronger looking woman approaching in full leather and banded mail. She carries herself tall for her obvious half elven heritage, but you can almost make out the chip on her should as she closes.

The woman nods her head as, "Yes, Felosial. Our new guests here have come about the rumors we sent out. It may be time for Mayor Leng to come out of his hole and talk to us again. Do you think you can stir him once more?"

The tension swells slightly as the half elf begins looking the two of you over head to toe. With a seeming nod of approval and a slight chuckle, "They'll need more in the group, but I think I can get the mayor to at least come and talk. Gods know he owes the rest of us that."

The two women exchange looks for just a second, "I am Felosial; Constable and protector of Oakhurst. Where are the two of you staying?"

Melanie & Theoban

Around you the tavern area of the inn seems to lurch back to life; the elder drunk returns to his half empty glass, the barkeep who had slightly opened the door fully appears through the door and stands "cleaning" an untouched area of the long oak top, and the waitress makes another pass of the room.

She makes her way back to the two of you, "Anything I can get for you?"

You can hear the door open again and a small framed, robed young lady enters the inn. Apparently, this was a was busy day as the waitress lets out an unconscious sigh under her breath.

Cassandra

The smell of fresh biscuits and stale beer catches your nose immediately as you push the door open to the Ol Board Inn. Inside you find an interesting display. An old man seated at the bar turns slightly to acknowledge the change in the air and you can see he's at least half finished his ale. Directly before you a large, handsome man is speaking to a...young lady...with green hair and a waitress. Behind the bar a larger, well fed man is tending to the empty bar section near the older man. His look is longer than the rest as you can sense he is judging.

The waitress pipes up over the other two, "Sit anywhere you like. I'll be with you in a moment."

"I am alright, thank you" Melanie says as she politely declines the waitress' offer of a drink, and seats herself at the same table as this 'Theoban' simply so that she doesn't have to stand around looking out of place.
"Ask him if he's available."
Taking a second to glare upwards at Blob, which she really needed to stop doing in public, Melanie waits for Theoban to make his reply to the waitress before trying to start a conversation. "I hope it isn't too bold of me to assume you are a traveler, could I ask what brought you here?"

Mortimor turns to politely address the constable, Seems introductions are of high stock today. Sir Gossilar at your service. I don't have a determined habitation yet, I've only just arrived. She shakes her head slightly to free herself off that line of thinking. "But anyway, I don't suppose you have heard anything about goblins or magic fruit in the area?"

"Goblins or magic fruit, no," Theoban answers. "The merchant said something about a forthcoming ecomonic boom, though. Ah, hello," he adds as the new arrival sits down at the table with him and the green-haired woman. "I'm not aware of anything formal of that nature, no. Felosial nods as she shakes hands, "Seems you were right, Rassla. Come, I'll give you the short version as we walk. The Ol Board Inn is just ahead there." She motions with her head, She turns to Rassla and nods deeply, "I'll check back with you and your husband later after I meet with Mr. Leng." She turns and begins walking. Rassla nods to you both, "Good luck gentlemen. I'm sure I will meet up again with you."

"We recently sent word out to several cities in look of assistance with a problem that has been plaguing our town for several years." She pauses for a moment to let you catch up, "There are many angles to this situation that I want to have our mayor come and discuss with you. Partly, due to my many tasks at hand today, but mostly because we have come to a-" A forced pause is not so well hidden when a cart of hay moves past the three of you as you walk. Felosial nods to the man push the cart who returns with a greeting. "It is mutual agreement to rid Oakhurst of this...disease but we are struggling to find the right means to an end."

She stops at the door to the large abode where the young girl had pointed to earlier, "We are here." She pushes the door open and walk through the door.

Inside you find a busy scene. Three adventurers are seated in the common area: a warrior type, a robed individual, and a....young, green haired girl with what looks like antennae; a old drunk is seated at the bar looking to finish off a large tankard; a well rounded belly is attached to a large man behind the bar who has a hard stare as you enter and a young girl is moving quickly about the room tending to tables of a few others that seem more like town folk.

"Well." Felosial states in a short, grumpy huff, "Seems our luck is guided to us. Mr Leng is already here. Please have a seat." She moves quickly to the back of the room to the bar are and saddles up next to the old man who has obviously seen better days. The bartender give her a nod as she approaches, and returns to eye balling the room cautiously.

The young girl returns the area and stops momentarily at the sight of you two, "Oh my...please have a seat anywhere. Can I get you anything?

Theoban, Cassandra, and Melani

As the three of you are piecing together rumors and stories, the door to the inn opens once more with three more patrons entering: a robed man, knightly type male and a half elven warrior woman. You can hear the conversation they have as the room is not that large and the woman of the group has a voice that carries well in the room. You can the woman leave the two men behind and move across the room swiftly behind you.

In a hushed voice, those paying close attention can hear her say the old man at the bar, "Mr. Leng. I have come across two guests who have heard the rumors we sent out. Do you think you can pull it together long enough to explain a few details to them?"

I'll pause here to let you guys catch up with yourselves and the story. I don't to railroad the group too much...

Though he does glance around the tavern catching the faces and a few eyes of the other patrons; his gaze falls upon the table nearest himself with the three other persons that look out of place. His curiosity grips him when he realizes that two of them may be no older than he, Mortimor was so used to working with older companions, youth is much more lively.

Umbrius & Mortimor

The girl nods and shows you to a table close the other group, "I'll return in just a moment."

As you look about the tavern area, you can see the bartender is now a part of the conversation at the bar. His demeanor does not look as pleasant as some barkeeps you've seen in the past. You watch as the constable pats the older man, whom you can presume to be the mayor on the back and turns back to the two of you. She walks quickly to your table and clicks her heels together, "Gentlemen, if you'll allow me to introdu-"

She stops as she looks back to see the mayor has stumbled his way to the wrong table.

Theoban, Cassandra, Melanie

As the three of you discuss the rumors, you make note of the new patrons. You had returned to your conversation when you were abruptly interrupted by the old drunk man who had been seated at the bar, "SSsshhoo, you thinksh yoush can findsh the lasht group of advensherersh I shent out lasht week, huh?" Well-"

The woman in banded mail who had come in just a moment ago with the other men comes to the table quickly. "Sir, please. It was these two adventurers I was referring to. Come Mr. Leng, please." She gathers the drunk man quickly and is moving him toward the table where the men were seated. before leaving, she looks back "I must apologize." Her look of conern settles on you Melanie and she walks away, and you can see she takes a quick look back over her shoulder as she ushers the old man away.

Mortimor and Umbrius

Felosial returns to the table with mayor/old drunk. He leans heavily to one side and is blinking heavily, seemingly trying to narrow which two adventurers he is trying to address. He looks back to Felosial "Are we there yet?"

She shakes her head quickly trying to shake off the frustration, "Yes, sir. We are here. Perhaps, you should sit. And eat. And drink some water." She looks to the young girl who gives a nod and moves to the kitchen quickly. The fattened barkeep comes forth with a large glass of water to sit at the table in front of the man as slumps into the seat.

The man looks up with a smirk, "She'sh a good conshtable ishn't ssshhee?" He takes a large drink of the water and gives a sour look, and then a bad grimace to the barkeep who only shrugs his shoulders as he walks away. He turns back to the two men, "Sshhoo, you thinksh you can find the group of advnsherersh I shent out lasht week, huh? Wait. Then who are thoshe people adnvenchering for?"He points to the group of three seated near the table and nearly falls out of the seat.

The mayor gives a slow blink as words are swirling about the room at him, "Shho you are all here for the shame thing?" His eyes, albeit red and squinty fall to the woman who had brought from the bar area. She looks about the group and hall collectively. Nodding to the mayor, she pushes the glass of water towards him.

The mayor gives the glass a wobbly nod and takes a long drink of the glass before slamming it back to the table. "We have..." He pauses again and looks about the room quickly, "Where did Helda get to now? I need a refurll"

"Sir, if you please. Allow me." The lady pats the mayor on the hand and he nods sitting back in his seat. "If it is true that you are all here for the same reason, I will simply tell you all of the problem in one story and leave room for a few questions after.?" She looks about the room for a nod from everyone before continuing."For two years now, we have been trading services with a group of goblins that appeared at the town outskirts one day. They claimed that had a magical apple that would grant healing and vitality to anyone who would eat it. We were...given council-" Her eyes dart to he mayor who was clearly more interested in grabbing the attention of the young waitress than any references to his leadership. Continuing "-to accept the terms of bartering food, materials and gold for this apple. We were again given council to attempt to grow the apples ourselves, which seemed like a great idea at the time. However, when it came time for the fall harvest, our grower came to us in great desperation for the saplings had all disappeared in the night."

"Helda, Helda, Heldaaaaa!" The mayor began to shout over the woman seated next to him. The young girl appeared at the swinging door, clearly upset. The mayor began to tap on the glass in front of him and mumble something under his breath that was neither understandable, or even a real language. He turned back to the woman who was simply staring at him now. "Pleashe continue..." his tone was getting lower and more quiet now.

Annoyed, but holding steady "Once more this last year, we were contacted by the goblin group. However we attempted to push back against them because of the obvious ruse they were attempting. Sadly, too many good soldiers lost their lives that day and we were bullied into another agreement, only this time far less to our liking. Now, it is time once more for the group to return to us. We thought we had the upper hand by sending out a party of adventurers not unlike yourselves to investigate this group of goblins. Two of the party are members of a well respected and loved family here in Oakhurst."

She clears her throat again, "We have not-" Her words are cut off by the sudden and loud snore coming from the mayor who has slumped so far back in his chair that his head is resting back on the top of the back. The woman motions to the barkeep who comes and scoops up the mayor in his arms. The last you see of the mayor is him being taken upstairs as he mumbles incoherently to the large barkeep.

Trying hard not to roll her eyes and stay as professional as possible, the woman continues again, "It had been 2 weeks with no response from the group when we sent out the tales in hopes someone would come and help us." She pauses to let the information set in the shakes her head seeming to scorn herself. "My apologies. I am Felosial, the constable here in Oakhurst. I should have lead with that. Stroking his beard with one grizzled old hand, Umbrius Maro raises his other with a single digit raised. "I have a question, two, actually. Number one, Where can we find the goblins, and do we know anything of their numbers?" The old man questions the constable.

"Number two." Maro says sharply, his eyes darting towards the mayor. Walking closer to the constable so that the room will not hear him, Maro continues in a hushed tone, his eyes occasionally darting towards the drunken public servant. "How did a sot like that come to lead you town? I'm guessing he was not like this when he came into power? Did something happen?"

"I don't have any questions, but I would like to thank you for sharing your story." Melanie says, slowly and carefully. "My village received a offer much the same as yours only recently, it is troubling to know more but a relief to know we did not lose anything by turning the goblins away."

Mortimor's face was twisted with some internal anger, he struggled for many moments as the constable finally ended her speech. As the unnamed older woman and Maro both came forth with questions, Mortimor managed to reign in his anger. Finally as the constable was preparing to answer the questions of the others, Mortimor stood up and demanded. You would sew the seeds of discourse, spread lies and risk the lives of travelers for the sake of goblin tall tales? What kind of town is this, it all sounds like a trap. Constable, how could you let this happen? Mortimor, despite is height, glares firmly at the Constable.

I'm going to Sense Motive the Constable's response to Mortimor's accusations. [roll0]
In case you're all wondering, this is exactly the kind of situation that would really make Mort angry.

Felosial listens to Cassandra with stern look on her face as if listening carefully to each part. She nods short, and quick before responding, "IF you wish to take on the task, we are only wanting to find those that were sent out. We are more concerned about their well being at this point. There is no time table for the search, so long as we get our sons and daughters back."

She listens next to Umbrius and, again nods when finishes and moves in close. She addresses the group after a quick look about the sitting area, "We are not certain about where the goblins are holed. The group that left a few weeks ago was heading to a desolate scar on the earth along the Old Road called the Sunless Citadel. It is all that remains of a fortress long lost to the earth and no one has ventured there for decades."

"That's not entirely true." The voice of the large barkeep can be heard booming from atop the stairs. As he moves down the staircase, "There was that fella with the large frog for a companion. Bella..Barto...no...Belak!" HE snaps his fingers, "Belak came through here soooommmme..." He looks off for a second or two trying to think as quickly as he could, "10 plus years ago. I never saw him again after that." He looks to Felosial, "For what its worth." He shrugs as speaks and returns to cleaning the bar area.

Felosial nods to the barkeep, "I was not aware anyone had traveled there for some time." She moves to reposition herself in her chair, "Mr. Leng, on the other hand," She looks to you Umbrius, "May have known about this, but his stress level has become increased ten fold in the last year. I can only imagine his mind has left memories aside especially with the excessive drinking he has taken on."

As Mortimor stands and addresses/accuses Felosial, you can see her move her head back quickly, as if his words physically assaulted her. Her tone is solemn as she speak after a second of pause, "I assure you, our intent to send out rumors were only meant to attract attention without warranting panic. We sent only a few runners out to be discrete about of troubles and only seek hubs where we could find the right people to seek out answers and return our original party." Her words waiver only slightly a the end, and you can see the water swelling in her eyes as meet each of you. Her intentions seem true and you can see the break in the hard edged character she had kept up until now.

She takes a deep breath and composes herself quickly, "We have friends and children that have disappeared. If we had enough of a garrison to seek them out without hindering our chances of defense of our city if the goblins return in a fury, we would have."

Felosial nods her head to you, Theoban. "He was adamant that we avoid the anger of this goblin mass. We did not know the true nature of the size of their force, or their intent. Once we knew the latter, his suggestion to assemble our own team met no resistance. They were a good team..." Her voice falls off as her eyes move to the distance.

She comes back to meet your eyes Umbrius with a smile. "I can tell no stone will go unturned with you, sir." She clears her throat and repositions herself in her seat once more as you address her, Mortimor. With a nod, "No offense taken, sir knight. The thought still irks me. I should have never allowed those...children to travel with them."

"Felosial! They are not children. They are grown adults who made a decision to help their town. Much like...this...young lady." The barkeep looks to you Melanie gruffly, but his face softens as you make eye contact. He shakes it off quickly and continues on his work.

Felosial's brow furrows slightly as she begins running a finger around the rim of the glass. "The Hucrele family will be hard to convince otherwise if their children perish." She shakes off the sullen mood that was taken hold of her. She nods to you Cassandra at your words. A confident smile grows on her face as she keeps eye contact with you. "There's a strength in you, too, isn't there?" You can tell instantly that it was a rhetorical questions as her eyes move around the room as she takes the group in.

Her eyes land you Melanie, "You mentioned that the goblins had come to your town as well. This means that we are not the only town they intend to extort then." You can see the stern, chilling look of a warrior return to her face. " Are you all positive you want to take on this task? It pays well enough seeing as the Hucrele's are toting the bill. I believe she is paying 500 gold per child."

Kish
2015-01-23, 10:45 AM
Theoban hesitates, not considering refusing but considering refusing payment, briefly before he reminds himself that this is how he makes his living and these Hucreles are likely far better able to pay than most people he helps. "I will certainly do everything in my power to see the adventurers who went before us returned safely. And to see that these goblins no longer threaten your town. How many were in this previous party? Were they all--members of the Hucrele family?"

Felosial shakes her head, "No. Only Talgen and Sharwyn. Talgen had proven himself in my service as a deputy so it was easy to acknowledge his eagerness to help the town. Shawyn, though, she..." She paused, letting out her breath, "She was very special. Her magic seemed to flow so naturally; as if she only needed to think the words of a spell."

"Felosial, ma'am. You shouldn't speka of them in the past. We do not know that they have perished yet."

The words of the waitress take Felosial by surpise, or maybe it was the realization that she had been speaking like that to begin with.

So only two members of the party have an actual bounty for their retrieval. Theoban keeps this to himself; it could sound like he's far more concerned about money than he is. "You are right, Helda, but it pains me to think that if they are alive, what could be holding them up from returning to us? I would almost rather they be..." She lets the words trail off and closes her eyes as she shakes off the macabre idea.

Felosial turns slightly to you Theoban, "There were 4 members of the party, all of them human: Talgen and Sharwyn, then Karakas, another deputy, who was a very good ranger and scout for me, and then the paladin of Pelor, Sir Braford." She pauses for moment at the latter half of the question, "Karakas will have a badge in his possession and of course the paladin his holy symbol. I can recall a ring that I have seen on-" She pauses again and you can see her nod just slightly, as if confirming the thought, "Yes, everyone of the Hucrele's hand. A gold signet ring with a dark gem inset. They vary, of course, with the wearer."

She pauses again to take a drink, "The Hucrele family have a large home just down the road a ways. You really can't miss it. It also, is on the way to the Old Road. Travel along the Old Road for a few miles and you come across a large fissure in the earth. There, you will find the remain of the fortress buried deep in the hole." She takes a look around the room with a raised eyebrow, anticipating another question.

So the Hucrele family is the only party offering a reward for the return on these people? Is the village in such disarray that you would not offer reward for returning your deputy? I don't mean to offend, I am just concerned for the state of this fine hamlet and its rulers. Mortimor glances towards the Mayor with almost a look of contempt, he turns his eyes upon the Constable and his look reflects pity. How long ago did they fail to report back? I fear the worst my have befallen them as well. I'm more than ready to seek out this party immediately if it means saving lives. "Oakhurst may not look like much, but we do have gold to spare. While I can not offer as much for Karakas as the Hucrele merchant can their own, I think 100 gold should do to line your pockets. Also, I can provide safe sleeping facilities if you need to come back to Oakhurst during your quest and materials if you'd like. Please, attend the Hucrele's residence first and foremost. Then, on your way out of town, stop by the post at the edge of town. I can outfit you with whatever we have available.

I would like to see you on your journey as quickly as I can. The few weeks they have been gone has not set well with many in the town. Even the farmers do not let their hears stray too far from home these days." Her tone is flat, but not offended. You get a good sense that she has bartered before. She stand and adjusts her gear on her waist before heading to the door.

With the small introductions taken care of, the group moves back out into the mid morning street, Felosial close behind you. Around the town, many people are now moving about peddling wares, moving carts of materials and general life is moving to and fro. Felosial takes just a few moment to point out the towns landmarks: The Hucrele home, The Hucrele general store, the local merchant square, a healer, and a blacksmith. She also takes a moment to point out the Old Road she had mentioned earlier before bidding farwells for the time being.

Moving along the street, it is easy to see charm in the small town. Most people greet you with a smile and a nod -and in Melanie's case a bit of a side glance. Moving toward the Hucrele residence, you can see why Felosial said you can't miss it. A large, stone home sits fenced in back from the road with a well thatched roof that seems to be in no shape of wear. An A-frame entrance with large double doors sticks out to you as you look on as a clear sign of entry to the home. A small stone path twists slightly up to the front steps of the home and you can see a middle aged man working the hedge row into a more rounded shape from the spring rains.

Moving up the path, the man pauses at the sight of the adventuring party. With a large smile he moves closer to the group before stopping a few feet away. His dingy clothes are clearly displaying his role in the home as the grounds keeper. "Good Mornin' there! I bet ya are here to speak ta Mrs. Hucrele aren't ya? Head on in ta tha vest'bule area an' I'll call for the lady." The man's accent is heavy, but his intent is clear. He walks back up the path and motions to the set of double doors. He steps to the side path, though, seeming to take a different route than prescribed to the group.

As you walk up, you can see inside the home through the large windows around the doors. You can see immediate the time, effort, and coin that the home making it seem more like a work of art. Swinging the doors open wide, and you can get an even heavier sense of status inside the home. The vestibule area you stand in is not very large, but well lit from the windows. Two benches of solid, polished oak line the sides of the the room giving plenty of seating area. Two more doors decorated with a large mural of an oak tree etched in bronze enclose the room ahead about eight feet.

As you file into the room, you can hear foot falls just outside the inner door. It opens to reveal an elderly man dressed all in black and trimmed a dark grey, satin material. His voice is low, deep and nasaly, "Welcome. What may I help you with today?" He seems nice enough, but you can get the sense that he does not want to spend any more time in this position that is needed.

***Down the hallway, the man stops at a set of double doors. Pushing them open, you find yourself in a slightly smaller room with moldings 6 plush, round seats that fill the room centered around two chair toward the middle of the room closer to the back wall. Intricate moldings adorn the ceiling attached by well carved wooden walls. Along those walls, several paintings hang depicting murals of what you can only guess as members of the family Hucrele. Each one is not only similar in face, but is stance and attire. All except one over the fireplace; the only woman of the group.

"Ok, Where are they? Here in the lounge?" You can hear a woman's voice echoing through the hall along with foot steps of what sounds like hard heeled boots. The man from the door disappears into the hall and his muffled voice can be heard, though unclear.

A woman appears in the doorway, dressed in a short coat, very thin riding pants and tall riding boots. Her face is drawn tight as she looks about the room. She pause on you Melanie and focuses her eyes, allowing them to squint just slightly as she looks you over. The pony tail on her head would normally suggest a younger age for her, but the longer she stands here, the more you can recognize her as the woman from the painting. "You have come inquiring the reward for my children, yes? I assume you spoke to the louse of a mayor or Felosial, too? What more assist could I provide you?" While her tone is short and to the point, something tells you her position nearly requires it.***

Note: Previous post was deleted on accident. I copied and pasted something similar.

She nods to your title, Mortimor. Her look grows to concern as you finish, "I can't imagine my children would have any disposition other than concern for this...city and that mayor." Her nose twitches quickly, "Listen, my attitude has been poor lately. I apologize." She moves to a side area of the room and opens a cabinet filled with large decanters. She stops her hand before grabbing a large green bottle. She closes the the cabinet and pats the door softly. Turing back the group, you can see the distress on her face still. [color=red]"They were very bright children. They were in good hands with the knight and that...ranger." She lets a long sigh."They were only going to be looking for the goblins and seeing what the plan was. Sir Braford seemed to be strong enough to carry an ox, and Karakas claimed to know the are well. The morning dew was long gone as the group sets out along The Old Road. A few of the townsfolk who had heard of the group were close by as the group moves along the path that was barely visible. Short of the last group that traveled it, an untrained eye could see that the path was not recently used by many.

Over a few short hills, not but a mile outside of the city, you can see a land that looks barren and destroyed to the North. Sparse vegetation grows and the land is very flat for what look like miles into the distance. To the south, a more vibrant land yields trees and rolling hills that are much more inviting though it too carries little cover of trees as the noon sun approaches and turns into early evening. You come across a few abandoned residences that are in need of much repair before shelter could be found. The road is quiet and no travelers meet you on the road as you walk much of the mid and early evening of the day. As the sun begins to paint the far Eastern sky a deep blue, you stop to look at what you can only assume is your destination.

The Old Road passes to the east of a narrow ravine. As the road's closest approach to the cleft, several broken pillars jut from the earth where the ravine widens and opens into something more akin to a deep, but narrow, canyon. Two of the pillars stand straight, but most of them lean against the sloped earth. Others are broken, and several have apparently fallen into the darkness-shrouded depths. A few similar pillars are visible on the opposite side of the ravine.

He'll listen for noises from below before he speaks, and then try to determine what can be seen from here--how far it is to the bottom, whether there's any sort of ledge or something, as well as whether there's anything other than terrain visible from here--so I'll make listen and spot checks.

"That looks like the answer to my question about how the goblins get in and out...or maybe how the party that went before us got in," Theoban comments, pointing to a rope tied to one of the pillars. "It looks like it's only twenty or thirty feet to the first landing. I'll go first, standing in front of other people is what I'm trained for. If we use that rope and the rope we got from the store in town, I should be able to climb down that rope" he points at the pillar role again to indicate which he means "and also have a safety rope in case of falling."

Yeah, that's DEFINITELY more than 20 or 30 feet. More like 50-60. Enough to hurt....a lot if you're not careful. The wall of the hole, though has a good incline, and while you are not trained at climbing a wall, you can easily see spots where you can grab a hold with foot or hand. You can also see the incline this particular spot has. It should be an easy enough climb down.

Theoban ties the party's new rope around his waist. "Can you all hold this, and let it out five feet at a time? When I reach the bottom of the ravine, I'll untie it and you can pull it up and the next person down can use it."

If the others go along with this, he starts to climb down the rope already attached to the pillar.

Theoban

You land with ease of the sandy floor of the landing. You take a quick look about the ravine, but it is difficult to even make out the far side of the vast opening with the shadow of the sun covering it now. As you take off the rope, you give it one last tug to signal for it to be returned.

Back on top

Theoban tugs at the rope one last time and you being pulling the rope back up quickly to tie off the next person.

Cassandra

As you look back out on to the plain, you can not see anything that could suggest an ambush. Though, when you glance back to Theoban and his descent, you could have swore you had seen something moving in the shadows of the landing floor.

There it was again! You can barely see the outline of the over grown rat just beyond the shadows 50 feet down. Clearly Theoban could not see it. It must have been the sun causing his eyes to adjust to not see the 3 foot long rat patiently crouched just behind a darkened rock. Just as you want to make a sound to warn him, you can see two others climbing out from other cracks of fallen rocks, readying to pounce!

At first glance, Theoban you can see that this landing is a sandy ledge that overlooks a subterranean gulf of darkness to the west. .The ledge is wide nut rough, Sand, rocky debris, and the bones of small animals cover it. A roughly hewn stairwell wigs ans wags down the side of the ledge , descending into darkness. As you turn at Cassandra's shout you can see the three sets of red eyes moving out from the edge of landing. With their noses to the ground, its almost as if they didn't quite see you until Cassandra yelled out. Though, as her arrow skitters off into the darkness, they are very much aware.

Dropping the bag of armor to the sandy floor below, you quickly descend over the edge of the ravine, Mortimor. Having the rope really helps you maneuver down the side of the sloped wall. Pausing for a moment to gather your position, you can see you are about half way down the with only 30' or so remaining.

Theoban grips the handle of his sword tight and moves quickly to engage the rats. They his and lurch at the knight but fail to make contact as he moves into their threatened area. His counter attack lands way wide to the left of the rats and to his greatest fear, the sword nearly slips from his fingers! He is able to recover though, and doesn't fully lose the sword.

The Rats see the chance to attack and move quickly. The two already on Theoban both lunge forward again, biting at the open stance left by Theoban's miscue with his sword. Both attacks miss, but the smell of the rats wafts and is nearly as damaging. With another blur, the rat at the top of the landing lunges past Theoban, having mistimed its attack. It scuttles its feet quickly in the sandy surface as it lands past Theoban (G5) but can not regain its hold and tumbles over the edge of the landing. You can hear it squeal for a few seconds before a nasty *thump* ecoes back up the ravine.

Cassandra knocks an arrow lets it fly. This time landing a solid hit through the top of the head of one of the rats on Theoban. The arrow kills the creature instantly and pins it to the sand floor.

Umbrios' orb lands away from the last rat and explodes into a ball of bright light the illuminates the area for a second before sizzling away in the darkness.

--back on to of initiative--

Theoban recovers from near loss of his sword, and after dodging the failed attempt by the rat to jump at him, he squares up against the last rat snarling as its two conspirators lay dead. His sword shimmers in the light as it moves from the shadow of the wall for a moment coming down hard across the bridge of the rat's face. The creatures gives a muffled squeal as it dies and the magic of the attack courses briefly through Theoban's veins. The screech echoes quickly and the silence the follows is only broken by Theoban's heavy breath of the strike.

I went ahead and made the rolls for Cassandra's next arrow assault and the last strike for Theoban. After 3 natural ones for the rats and their attempts to literally NOT fall on his blade by dumb chance, I rolled two natural 20s for Theoban....and Cassandra...go figure...I wanted to move past this easy encounter and not take as long as we did over the weekend (which is mostly on me...)

The rats are all dispersed, Mortimor is still half way down the wall and Cassandra and Umbrios are still on the edge looking in.

The group easily manages down the rope with ease between the knots in the rope and a few hand holds you find that help the most inexperienced climber. Taking a look out in the ravine does not reveal much in the way of distance. The outer wall across the distance is too far to see an end to, and the depth of the ravine is blocked by a few switch back stairs that descend further down. It looks like about 3 sets of stairs that cut back on each other. The condition of the stairs seem adequate and as if the group could move together and not have to worry about weighing too much on the obvious old construct.

Moving forward, the group takes on the stair case with ease. There is, in fact, three sets of stairs that take you another 30-40 feet down into the ravine. You can feel the air cool as the lower you go.

You come to the last landing before another longer set of stairs would take you lower. At the edge of sought, a fortress top emerges from the darkness, the subterranean citadel, though impressive, seems long forgotten if the lightless windows, cracked crenelations, and leaning towers are any indication. All is quiet, though a cold breeze blows up from below, bringing with it the scent of dust and a faint trace of rot.

The narrow stairs empty into a small courtyard, apparently what was the tp of what was once a crenalleted battletment. The buried citadel has sunk so far into the earth that the battlement is now level with the surrounding cavern floor. The floor stretches away to the north and south, and it is apparently composed of a layer of treacherous, crumbled masonry, which reaches to an unknown depth. To the est looms the surviving structure of what must be the Sunless Citadel. A tower stands on the west side of the courtyard. Common sense tells you that the path is not going to be easily traversed here. The flooring looks weak and not safe to move quickly across.

Moving across the floor will slow your speed to 1/4 your rate. I also need a balance check from anyone moving forward on the crumbling floor.

...moving forward...

Taking your time to move over the fallen masonry and large holes from fallen rocks takes some risk, and time, to traverse the unstable courtyard. You can only move a feet at a time without the ground stirring or small rocks slipping out from under you feet.

Cassandra, about 10 feet in, which seems life a life time at this snails pace, you see a familiar look of a false floor at the area around the door across the room. Pointing it out to everyone, you can each see the are of the trap door more clearly now that it is obvious. You can make out the walk around, too. The small walk way is only a foot wide, and while difficult, seems to be the better approach than any other idea to avoid the trap.

You open the door carefully to citadel, as a few rocks crumble to the sides where the large iron hinges rest. Peering in, you can see this was once a tower. This circular area is cobbled with cracked granite, upon which sprawl four goblins, all apparently slain in combat. One stands with its back against the western wall, the killing spear still skewering it and holding it upright. Three wooden doors lead off from this area to the southwest, northwest, and northeast only slightly back the way you entered. Above, a hollow tower of loose masonry reaches 30 feet, but the intervening floors and stairs are gone, except for a couple of crumbled ledges.

Looking over the bodies, you find it void of any true valuable items. The creatures still have short swords either close to where they expired or attached to their belts. Looking over the creature pinned to the wall reveals something scrawled on the wall behind it in a crude looking language.

Mortimor
As you approach the fir st door ( NE ) to listen, the ground around the door frame shifts, jarring you in your place. The door hinges shake loose, causing the door to jilt suddenly, leaving it slanted in the door way. You can see around it now, noting that behind the door is nothing crumbled rock barring entrance.

Moving to the second door way (NW), you listen closely but nothing of note can be heard behind it.

Last door (SW) seems to be of nothing also, until you catch the sound of faint scratching just before walking away. You stop quickly and listen close and you can barely hear the scratching in long pauses. Your mind racks to think about what could make such a sound and the thought of those large rats from before come to mind. Or at least a creature like that walking across the cobbled floor. Having some elf blood coursing through your veins, you can see around Theoban in the room even in the darkness. Your eyes immediately find the large rat moving quickly into a large pile of crumbled rocks. Only a second goes by before you can see its eyes staring back at you from the safety of the debris. That should help.

Inside the doorway

The masonry walls of this 20-foot wide hall are in poor repair. The far end is especially bad, as it has completely collapsed, filling the southern section with rubble. The western wall is in much better shape than the other walls, and it holds a stone door with a rearing dragon carved in relief upon it. The door contains a single keyhole, which is situated in the rearing dragon's open mouth. There amongst the rubble, you can see the eyes of the large dire rat looking back you now in clear light. It snarls and growl, but makes no attempt at coming from its hiding hole.

Elsewhere

Glen and Paedyn

The road was easily traveled for the two of you. The map that Felosial have given the two of you was well written, making this catch up part of the adventure very easy. The thought of having to track down three adventurers was almost cosmically entertaining; you'vwe never heard of hunting the good guys before.

The ravine was just as Felosial had stated and it was easy to see how the traverse was nothing of a challenge. You both grab a hold of a separate knotted rope and descend in the hole just as the sun passed midday. Below, you find the battle against a few dire rats that may have been uneasy for an untrained swordsman. But, by the signs of the footprints in the sandy landing area, you can tell this was not much of a battle. You each move quickly down the switch back stairs and into the crumbled court yard where you finally meet some resistance with the ground full of debris and shattered rocks. You, too, find the ill laid trap at the front of the doorway and manage your way around it easily to the large door that is still left wide open.

There before you, you can see the three adventurers by Felosial's descriptions , their backs turned to you as they peer into a dark doorway across the circular tower room. They haven't seen you yet, nor have you made any attempt to be seen or heard. Though, it looks as though they are attempting to move forward into the room.

Enter: replacements...

AND, yes you can attach to your person as you move forward from here on. The rat is not making an attempt at attacking the group, one v 3 bladed warriors. Not happening. So, there is no need for combat initiatives or going turn by turn. Now that we have more players, I'm sure the rapid fire approach will slow a bit so that everyone has a chance to respond IC to actions of others and the surroundings.

Paedyn looks at Cassandra, "Interesting. I would like to hear about your mother's shared insight sometime. Pardon me lady."

He takes a slow, but confident step toward the rat, kneels and begins 'chittering' incoherently.

Paedyn utilizes his Speak With Animals ability, "We have no interest in your territory. We are merely passing through. We will leave you in peace, if you leave now. Return after we've gone, or not, it matters not to us."

Sniffing quickly, the rat pokes its head out at you and turns a wary, red eye to get a better look at the situation. Seeing a clear path for the door, it takes off in a lumbering gallop towards the door that had crumbled apart upon investigation earlier. It finds a way to get its large body through a hole and scurries into the darkness.

On the wall of the round, tower room, you both can make out the word "Ashardalon" written in draconic on the wall just above a dead goblin that was impaled by a spear. Could be more graffiti like that of what you have seen on your way down into the Citadel.

Some elves, by no means all of them, have a natural empathy with all living creatures; very few can communicate with them directly.

"That could be useful if we encounter more rats--or other animals, in here," Theoban comments. "You read Draconic? Also useful. But no, the word means nothing to me. I'm Theoban; I stand in front and encourage our enemies to hit me. Occasionally I hit them."

Paedyn

Well met Theoban. Elves have a name for those who 'stand in front'. Leader.

He renders a slight bow.

A rare leader indeed, judging by your humility and humor. Speaking with rats can, occasionally, have its uses, but compares not at all to conversing with a 700 year old oak, bristlecone pine, or colony of aspen trees.

Paedyn can utilize Speak with Animals/Plants 3 times a day as a spell like ability; and Draconic was on the list of bonus languages for elves - I had no idea it would actually be useful, languages almost never come into play with my regular playing group

Ashardalon, is perhaps the strongest wyrm to have ever walked the world. The greatest daughter of the Queen of the chromatics. Some people worship her and seek to end the world in Dragon fire. Cassandra lectured.

On that note. The unnatural desolation on the way here could easily have been caused by dragonfire. She said clearly worried.

Glen sits crosslegged on the floor, imagining a painting of a dragon breathing dragonfire upon the earth. "Big bad dragon whose worshipers want to burn everything. Theoban returns Paedyn's bow. "Thanks for the compliment. It seems unlikely that this Ashardalon would bother herself with goblins and a small village, unless what's going on here is just the tip of something much larger, and even then I'd wonder that she wouldn't send minions humans and elves would be more inclined to trust to sell the fruit. So if she destroyed the land around here, it's probably only peripherally related to what's going on now. I don't believe we know anything more that would affect our going through that door; can you open it?"

Examining the stone door reveals no traps or secret intentions to it other than its unkept nature. A thick layer of dust covers the intricate design of the rearing dragon, the keyhole, and the handle to the door. When trying to open the door, you find it locked tight.

I agree Theoban, highly unlikely that any dragon has associations with these goblins. Mortimor made a mental note, if there was a dragon involved, he'll be sure never to make that statement again. Locked? Most assuredly, but I do not believe the door itself possesses any insidious traps. Let's see if we can get it open.

The elf reaches down and flips his belt out to reveal a finely crafted set of tools/picks. He studies the lock for a second, then selects three small tools. While holding one in his mouth, he inserts the other two into the lock and begins moving them in coordination.

Paedyn pokes and turns and moves the small pieces of the toolset for a few moments. Several parts in the lock move and shift, but just when it seems its about to work, the third tool pops out from the lock and lands with a clank of the floor. A few more attempts end similarly to this before the signs of it just not working are imminent. It seems this lock is either well made, or secured with strong magics.

Having abandoned the stone door, the group moves back to the round tower room you entered in. The other door is to the NW.

As you move back to the main room with the group, you catch a strange crack along the south wall of the round room. The kind of strange crack that means a secret room. You move close to the wall and the door becomes visible now that you know its there. Just as you are about to reach out and press the small switch between the cracks, you catch a glimpse of the dart hole where a trap lies waiting.

Bending down to pick up his picks, Paedyn issues a mirthless chuckle, "Well. That could have been more skillfully executed. My apologies everyone."
He listens to the suggestions, "Perhaps an alternate route, or further examination of the these rooms is a better course of action right now."

Following the rest of the party into the main room, Paedyn suddenly stops and looks intently at the South wall before moving in to examine further. Approaching the wall, the outline of a secret door becomes readily apparent, "It would appear that there exists a hidden passageway within this wall..." reaching out to what he believes to be the lever to open the door, he suddenly freezes, "...a trapped passageway at that."

The elf pulls the strange mask up to cover the lower half of his face and pulls tools from his belt. *muffled* "Let's see if we can get this one right." Even though you recognized the old style of trap making, the Ebonezeria dart action to be precise, your heart still sank when the trigger tripped and the dart sprung out from the hole and stuck into shoulder. It stung for just a second, but only from the impact against your armor. The dart falls to the floor and you are left curious and slightly bruised. Looking at the dart, you can see it was a very old trap that has been sitting unattended for far too long to be even close to accurate or even effective.

The door way moves just slightly as the latch unhinges, letting dust loose from around the doorway. Pushing it open, you find a small room that is roughly 10 x10. This pocket chamber is damp and cold. The skeletons of three long-dead archers slump against rubble-filled arrow slits along the east and south wall. Theoban's surge of power rocks the skeleton back a half step as shards of bones fly against the doorway. Even with a mighty hit, you can tell it didn't quite do as much damage as it felt like it should have.

Glen still holds the crossbow at the skeletons, waiting for a move from Paedyn for a clear shot.

Paedyn finds a usuable chair leg on the floor manages a good grip before swing hard at the skeleton just blasted by Theoban. The leg is strong enough, the blow hard enough, and the bloody dice roll from the DM to clock the skeleton square in the jaw taking the head clean off. Its red eyes dim as the head rolls to the ground and the body fall (un)lifeless next to it.

Son of a bitch if I rolled all max values for those....

Cassandra and Mortimor move almost as one as the exchange of weapons transpires together. Mortimor finds himself close to action now with a solid mace in hand, just no clear targets to attack for the time being. Cassandra moves up closer to action and has a eye on another table leg to match Paedyn's if so inclined.

Skeleton #3 takes a swing at Theoban, landing the blow heavily, but the scratch does not make a mark against the armor or skin that it hits. Theoban's skinned gleams just slightly as the skeletons claws rack across him.

Skeleton #2 steps forward, striking out against Mortimor, but the clawed hand nicks the doorway, causing it to lose its balance just slightly and ruins the assault.

The makeshift club lands a sold blow that sends a creepy echo through the room of crunching bone. The skeleton spins in its place and falls to the ground dead once more.

Cassandra grabs a hold of another leg of the table, ready for any skeletons that may break through the stalwart line.

Mortimor sees the chance to move up as the skeleton falls, and finding his footing, comes around the door wall with a devastating blow to the last skeleton in the room. Able to land a blow to the shoulder area of the skeleton, the skeleton crumbles to the floor, its glowing red eyes dim and fade away with the shot.

It would seem there were a few barricades that were attempted with tables and chairs or even some general looting that lead to the destruction of whatever seating arrangements were once here. Looking over the skeletons in the small room will find a hand full of gold (24 total) and 3 bolts that somehow managed the test of time better than the owners as they seem only carry a little dust on them. There are a few types of claw marks on the door. The freshest sets seem to belong to the long clawed kobolds and to a shorter, stubby claws of goblinoids. You can even make out what looks like a set of claw marks a little higher up on the door of a mephit. Those marks are deeper and much older than the rest due to dust and dirt that has settled into the markings.

The thought of holding up for the night reminds you of the long day the group has had. Opening the door slowly, you find a long hallway, roughly 40 feet long, stretching out. On either side of the hallway are two doors; one wooden (on the right) and one made of stone (on the left). At the end of the hall, another wooden door awaits.

Just let me know who and how you want to go about the hall, please. A few checks should be involved with the search: spot, search, listen, move silently, etc/

The elf shoulders his longbow, and creeps cautiously into the hallway. Wincing at the amount of noise made by his compatriots, he steps lightly hugging the edge of the hallway, scanning the floor for signs of tracks and recent activity. When he reaches the stone door he runs his hands slowly and deliberately around the door jam and then examines the handle and lock.

Mortimor and Cassandra continue past him to the end of the hallway as he deftly jumps across the hall to land next to the wooden door. Again he slowly and deliberately runs his hands along the door jam while scans them intently. Once finished with that he moves onto the handle and lock.

At each door he will listen intently for any signs of activity.

As quiet as a thunderstorm, the group moves down the hallway. You come to the stone door on the left, you can hear something moving about behind the thick door, despite Mortimor's efforts to distract. It stops suddenly, though, for just second before returning once more. It almost sounds like something pushing up on an immovable object, like a door that just won't budge.

At the far door of the hall, you can very audibly hear faint whimpering sounds. Even though the door is closed, the sound is tired and exasperated as if it were reflex to allow comforting in the sound.

The wooden door to the right as no noise behind it.

Your hand grips the old, rusted handle of the door and you see an inch of dust melt away at your touch. You move to open the door, but it only budges a small bit as dust falls away from the door revealing a relief carving of a fish in the middle of the door. Your first instinct is to pull a little harder on the door, thinking it may just be jammed. However, putting as much force as you can into it, you find you can not open the door at all.

Glen leans forward a bit and whispers, "Damn thing must be locked." You can't see the smile, but you know its there all smug and annoying.

Moritmor

The door creaks open slowly and you move into the room cautiously. Inside you find an irregularly shaped room that runs 30 ft in front of you and 50 ft to your sides. Scrawled across the walls of the crumbling room are bright green markings much like you had seen before at the top of the ravine. A large pit in the center of the chamber shows evidence of a recent bonfire as the smell lingers in the air.

Directly in front of you, along the southern wall of the room, a large cage sits empty with a gaping hole where rods had been torn apart. Before the cage, a small bench draped in a green cloth holds several small objects on it. Near the bench, a bedroll can be seen from your point of view and you can hear small, weak sobs coming from the area, though you can not make out a shape amidst a large pile of cloth and blankets.

As you look about the room, you can get a good sense that the room was left not too long ago: the cage was not covered in dust like the other rooms, the large fire pit still had fresh ashes left in it, the candles that line the bench and throughout the room seemed to be used recently and the fact they were left and not gathered up.

Moving closer to the cloths, the pile stirs once more before Paedyn's arrow removes the top layer revealing a small, kobold creature that cowers away at the light and the sight of warm bloods. Its clawed hands covers its tear stained face and its hissing voice breaks the tension, <Draconic>"No, pleeeasse. Leeave mee w-warm blood." The kobold cowers back under the bench more and draws the cloths closer to itself as it tries to make itslef as small as possible.

The creature seemed to ignore most of the common spoke to it. Though, when you each speak a tongue it understands, its eyes open a little more widely and it looks to each of you and nods its head.

About the room

There are several doors that are in each corner. To the west, a long hallway stretches out, and you can see several doors lining it into the darkness. Most of the doors look to have been used recently, and only the door in the NW area looks stranger than the rest. You can instantly spot the arrow trap set on this door, and that it has very recently been set.

There is a small cache of wood that seems to have been held aside for the fire pit that has not been burned as of yet. It looks to hold enough to start a small fire. It doesn't take long to gather enough and place it in the fire pit.

As you examine the trap, you find its workings easy to study. The arrow hole on the wall was sloppy, and the trigger itself was rudiment at best. It doesn't take but a minute to disarm the trigger, and slowly release the arrow from the wall. As you finish, you hear something stir from behind the door. It was quick, and just barely audible, but it was definitely a stirring of something behind the wooden door.

Working together, you are able to gather enough wood and get the fire lit and crackling just slightly. The warmth and light from the fire are not only physically relieving, but also to your minds. The weight of the day suddenly begin to take their toll as you remember dinner time is just around the corner.

The creature sits up and takes a look about the room as the fire begins to catch and really start warming the room. It rubs its arms with the rags and slowly lets them fall, "These rags keep M-meepo warm. Meepo only wants to sleep for a w-while. The took her away from Meepo and now Meepo a-alone."
