So, i was reading and posting in this tread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?393113-Reasonable-loot-for-2nd-level-party) and I thought, well, maybe more DMs need help on this front. Thus, this tread.

BTW, Google gives some good links and this post (http://www.roleplayingtips.com/how-to-create-great-magic-items-in-just-three-minutes/) has some excellent advice. I found a thread dealing with the same issue, but it was from 2005 and is buried in the homebrew forum.

I invite you all to post interesting ideas for magic items. I'll try and keep an index in this post.

Try to follow the following template:

So, to kick things of, here are some items I made during my stints as DM. Most are 3.5. Some are even older. They should be easily converted. I'll try to anyway.

This is the first of the two plot hook items I inserted in a AD&D campaign. It was a sealed glass bottle that contained moving smoke. Sometimes faces formed in the smoke. Demonic faces. Detect magic revealed some sort of creature in the smoke that was connected with a magic umbilical cord to some point over the horizon. My players released the smoke and saw the resulting smoke cloud trekking slowly towards that point on the horizon. They never followed it so they never fount out what it was and where it was going. Therefore neither did I.

This is obviously an unique item and frankly only posted for inspiration. Players will have some fun with it even though they don't follow up on it. Attunement is not really an issue as the item basically does nothing.

This is the second plot item. A small leather bag that contains around 200 small but incredibly detailed human figurines. They are in fact miniaturized and frozen humans. A fact that becomes apparent when one of the delicate figures breaks. The detailing goes on inside the figurines.

Of course a wizard did it but how or why was never made clear. Neither was who they were. I was thinking about a long lost kingdom and that it disappeared overnight. And these figurines where a clue to what happened. But again my players didn't up.

This is an other unique item that does nothing. No attunement.

Sure. Though rarity doesn't mean much to me. I don't own the DMG.

This is a 3.5 item which I tried to convert to 5e. Some 3.5 remnants remain including reference to my homebrew pantheon. This item was designed with a particular Paladin in mind. It should work well for clerics. It is obviously a very powerful item.

This magnificent Vestment has been worn by many militant churchleaders of the Temple of Regus in ancient times. Saint Benificus was believed to be the last to have worn it. Benificus was killed in the great Arakian war but his body was never recovered. The Vestment resurfaced recently in the Temple of Regus at GreyMount when the temple was destroyed during recent events. It may be that Benificus was buried here under a different name. Benificus will be interred in the rebuild temple in GreyMount and the Vestment is loose in the world again.

Rarity:unique or very rare
Attunement: yes

Requirements: Alignment lawful good

Benefits:
Bonus Channel Divinity: gain 1 extra use of Channel Divinity per short rest (or long rest if this is to much).

Armor augmentation: if worn over any kind of armor the Vestment gives the following bonuses:
• Resistance to all no magical fysical damage for 1 minute. Once per long rest
• No movement penalties for wearing medium or heavy armor.
• All Melee Spell Attacks and Ranged Spell Attacks have disadvantage against you. (thanks Justin Sane for the conversion idea)

Attack augmentation:
• All melee attacks count as Good aligned
• Smite Does 1d8 more damage

• Half the AC bonus of the armor (including shield and enhancement bonuses) is changed to a Divine bonus to AC. A Divine bonus to AC counts toward your flatfooted and touch AC as well as your normal AC. Not sure how to convert thisAll magical attacks rolls against you (like rays, bolts, etc) are made with disadvantage?

I haven't hashed the full back story out yet but it a greataxe gifted to a warlock by there patron.

Greataxe (Bloodlust)
Damage 1d12 slashing + 1d6 necrotic
Alignment: any neutral, any evil
Attunment: yes
Unique or very rare

When you draw bloodlust you take 1d6 necrotic damage.
On every fourth hit you take 1d6 necrotic damage.
When you deliver the killing blow you receive1d8 temporary hit points.
Once a day before midnight a blood offering must be made killing a living enemy counts for the offering. Undead and constructs do not count. If the offering is not made this way. You lose 20 hit points.

Bloodlust can be empowered with 10 charges of your Eldrith Blast. On making a melee attack you can choose to discharge a charge. The target of the melee attack takes the additional damage of an Edlrith Blast charge. Can only be charged once a day.

Any healing effects received are half

Here's two magical weapon I recently created to suit the conversion I was doing.

Fey bane rare
+1 vs fey type creature

This is mostly to replace cold iron weapons. I'm still considering if it can affect creatures that have the Fey Ancestry racial feature...


Bone Crusher uncommon
Bone crusher is a finely crafted club or great club from the bone of large creature. It can bypass the resistance from bludgeoning a creature may have.


both weapons don't require to be attuned.

As you probably know, Sharon is the guy who ferries the dead over the river Styx. Well, at one time he lost his paddle and it ended up on the Material Plane.

Description: it's a rather old paddle. It is of normal size an weight and not even well made. The wood is grey and even has woodworm holes in it. The handle is carved to resemble a screaming face. This is done crudely.

Rarity: unique
Attunement: yes and no

The paddle had three uses.
1) it doubles the movement speed of any rowing boat sized vessel when used to row said vessel.
2) when aware of it's magic and attuned to it the paddle can be used to travel to any place on navigationable water in 1 day, 1 hour and one minute.
3) when aware that this paddle is Sharon's Paddle, which is a secret not easily discovered, the paddle can be used to cross over to the river Styx by letting the paddle eat one GP. Sharon will come to collect his paddle when you arrive on the river Styx however.
