Hey folks. I'm picking miniatures of my playgroup's characters as a surprise gift. I've gotten all of them except for the DM's, which will represent his character in an upcoming campaign hosted by me.

I asked the DM what he wants to play and he said a wizard, inspired by Sherlock Holmes. He wants to be a male human/elf "investigator" type, and wants to be a necromancer specialist. I didn't pry too much into physical characteristics for fear of arousing suspicion.

Fortunately, there are a ton of sweet wizard miniatures out there. Unfortunately, I'm bogged down by the variety! I browsed through Reaper Miniatures and pulled out my favorites:

It's a lot, I know. What do you guys think? Which one is the best?

I think that Ezren, Damiel, Quinn or Trathus Varr are the best. The dudes with the swords doesn't seem very mage-y, investigatory, or Sherlock Holmes-y. They're nice, but I doubt someone would describe their character like that and then charge into battle.

Personally, I think Quinn and Damiel are the best choices as they look more like people who might investigate things. Do you recall any trends with the characters he tends to play?

There's a few that I both like and think fit the theme, but forcing myself to narrow it down my vote goes to Trathus or Quinn. Not much in it though.

Thanks for the input! I agree with that reasoning.

As for trends, hmm. I think he's always a human, primarily because he finds an extra feat too hard to ignore. He never has played a brutish character. He's done binder, bard, dextrous fighter, scout, warlock, shadow monk. Nimble humans. He also has a thing for necromancy / demons. Likes being inventive in problems both combat and otherwise, doesn't usually go for raw damage.

Then I doubly recommend against Seltyiel or Malek as they seem like bruiser types. Satheras might be a better choice if he has mystic elements, he doesn't seem like a man of science, but more of a man of eldritch secrets.

1 and 4 seem like the best fit and are additionally the coolest.

I'm partial to Quinn and Damiel as well, given the description. A quick weapon swap would be easy to accomplish for Damiel (get some wire from a hobby or home improvement store and attach it to the weapon hand and instant staff).

I vote Quinn.

Quinn seems to fit the investigator-wizard type well

In my opinion, I'd pick either Satheras or Ezren.

in my opinion, 3 and 7 are the most wizard-like, i would choose between those two

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It seems like Quinn and Damiel are the two most popular choices. I'm going to prod him for a race (for "campaign reasons") and pick up Quinn if he chooses human and Damiel if elf. Though I'm also considering buying both since they're not very expensive anyway.

That's interesting. Easy to do? I wonder if the same could be done to make a grappling hook :smalltongue:
