Hey all,

Thinking of using this item as a McGuffin some time down the track in my campaign - does anyone know if it has any history or lore attached to it? I don't recognize it as an artifact from 1E or 2E, but I could be wrong. It would fit the fluff of my current campaign quite well, but I am curious if it has an existing history I might be able to incorporate.

Cheers - T

Iron Gauntlet of War (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/magicItems/artifacts.htm#ironGauntletofWar)
The Gauntlet grants a +8 enhancement bonus to Strength. The wearer doubles the damage bonus on any smite attacks he or she makes. If the wearer has the Leadership feat, the wearer’s Leadership score increases by +4, but the wearer can never attract or keep followers or cohorts who are good or chaotic. Once per day, the wielder can use implosion as a 20th-level caster (DC 23). The Iron Gauntlet of War is intelligent (Int 13, Wis 18, Cha 24, Ego 26) and lawful evil. It can communicate telepathically with its wearer, though it cannot speak. It will always seek to dominate any wearer who isn’t lawful evil, forcing such an owner to commit lawful evil deeds (or else find a more suitable wearer).

Doesn't sound familiar.
You could make something up.

Ever read the Avatar books in Forgotten realms? Instead of this being the Iron Gauntlet of War, it's the Black Gauntlet of Bane, formed of his divine will in the moments after he was cast down from the heavens by Ao; and wielded by his Avatar during the Zhentarim campaign against Shadowdale. This gauntlet was presumed destroyed during the first Banedeath, an incident which was believed to have killed Elminster of Shadowdale as well.

edit:
Actually just checked my ELH.
It's originally called the Iron Gauntlet of Hextor. Used by him in his first battle against heironeous. Since then, it's been passed down to his various lieutenants and high priests.

Ah, thank you.

Hextor works well, as my current campaign is set in Greyhawk.
