Beast master ranger question!

So I was planning on making a halfling that hailed from the desert, and I thought a vulture would be a neat animal companion. And then I thought, could my vulture lift me, allowing me to fly? I did the math, and I believe a halfling wearing light clothes could be lifted by the vulture. But I'm not 100% sure it's a viable option, whether some rule stipulation or incorrect calculation. Am I correct? Or am I missing something obvious?

Depending on encumbrance rules being used you can actually ride that vulture (it is size medium and can carry your weight); but if I recall it can't carry much else (like your armor or weapons) like a pteranodon can
