Welcome to The Stick Awards II: Second Edition!

The Stick Awards are handed out to the best strips of all time as chosen by our fellow Playgrounders.

Over the next few days, we're taking a bit of a break and continuing The Best of the Hundred Tournament for Comics #601 - #700 as we take the time to decide which of the strips really are the best of best.

For full details about the Stick Awards, and any questions about them, please check out the main thread here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=283609).

To read more about the original Stick Awards, created by Nazzo, the 102nd, please read his thread here. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34791)

To vote in this thread, simply state which comic of the five listed is your favorite. Bolding the number of the comic (Like this) helps it stand out.

Voting, which only lasts five days during the Best of the Hundred Tournament will close on January 29th, 4pm EST. Any votes made after that will NOT count toward the totals.

The winner of this semi-final will go on to the finals which will be held after this second semi-final is done. The two strips that get the most votes during the semis that DIDN'T win, will also reach the finals. So voting is extra special important this time around, as it will determine who the 'Wild Card' entrants are.

In the previous semi-final, http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g68/Cats_Are_Aliens/Banners/DarthV.png 639 - If They Pull a Knife... (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0639.html) thought calmly and rationally and dispassionately about how to....

Yeah. No. I can't even type that with a straight face. :smalleek: Safe to say, it left a memorable impression on the judges, and thus moved on Finals for this set.

Meanwhile, :vaarsuvius: 628 - Every Parent's Worst Nightmare (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0628.html) is currently holding down Wild Card spot #1 with 6 votes and :belkar: 610 - You're It (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0610.html) is holding down Wild Card spot #2 with 4 votes. Thus if another strip is to enter the finals without winning this semi, it has to get at least 4 votes.

One strip has blasted its way into the Finals for this set. And how! But the brave souls who will face it have not yet been decided. And for that, we need your help as we continue this Best of the Hundred by voting in....

Hmmm, several good ones here. I feel sort of sorry for 689 and 696; sure they're good, but it's hard to beat the Darth Vaarsuvius arc. 661, while a great moment for MitD, never impacted me quite as much, although it is very good. Finally, 672, while delivering one of the most interesting reveals of the entire comic, just doesn't have the seem feel and menace to it that #657 does.

661. For me, it isn't about the MitD's big moment; I like the strip because we get to see Xykon at his most upset. It's an infrequent treat--consider that he pretty much got through all of W&XP without losing his temper (including when he was almost destroyed).

657 > 661 > 672 > 689 = 696

672. (Long-time lurker here, first time poster. :roach:) There are some really good ones in here, and 689 and 696 are pretty funny, but for me out of these nothing beats the feel of the "wait whaaaaat?!" moment of the that little unanticipated planet in the Snarl.

I mean c'mon, we were given that very lengthy and gloriously crayon-y explanation of how the Snarl/gates worked the first time around. What do you mean, that may not actually be how it works?!

657, no speech needed.

661 for me.

Great selection here (though a smidgen less impressive than the last one), but I love 657: Second Chance. I don't think I'll ever vote against a strip that superimposes a killer villain speech over a silent but magnificently-presented internal conflict that represents a key turning point in a main character's arc.

Wow. I'm really impressed with the current batch. I don't have a perfect memory of past Semi's, but I think this is one of the (if not the) overall best. 689 might be the weakest, but I have a soft spot for the Belkster :smallwink:. I wouldn't complain about any strip winning, though I don't think any of them has a chance to win the final...

I just have to go with 661 - The Path of Least Expectation: When in doubt, vote for MitD!

Humph. My favourite Darth V strips did not make it, and I don't have a clear favourite among the first three here (one of which will win), so I'll get to show my love for 696.

I vote for 657, bascially for the same reasons that Emanick explained on this thread.

657 for me. Great speech from Xykon, accompanied with the silent character crisis of V.

As usual, tough match here. I'm tempted to throw 689 a bone because I still snicker at the Take That in it. But, sadly, not enough to vote for it. So, 657 or 661. A The Reason You Suck speech or a WTF!1!elventy-eleven moment. Hmmm... Might change my mind in the finals, but for now I'm voting for 657. That deconstruction of V as well as one of the best illustrations of Xykon's world view.... Yeah, that seals it.

Plus, you know, Angry Paladin Enter, Stage Left. :smalltongue:

And with that....

VOTING IS NOW CLOSED!

:mitd: 661 - The Path of Least Expectation (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0661.html) is the winner of this semi-final! It now moves on to the finals for the Best of the Hundred tournament (601-700).

Right behind it is :xykon: 657 - Second Chance (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0657.html) which with 9 votes in this semi, earns Wild Card Slot #1.

The second Wild Card Slot goes to :vaarsuvius: 628 - Every Parent's Worst Nightmare (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0628.html), which held on to its spot as no comic in this semi reached the 6 votes it had.
