The Process
Each week, I will post three head-to-head matches between competitors, and y'all will be able to vote once in each. Voting will last for one week, after which I will post another three matches. This will continue until all Linear Guilders have faced three other competitors. At this point, a score for each Linear Guilder will be computed. The score of a competitor depends on the scores of those they defeated, which in turn depends on the scores of who they defeated. It is a variation of the PageRank algorithm used by Google.
Subsequently, the tournament will enter the Elimination Phase. During the Elimination Phase, the Linear Guilder with the lowest score will be eliminated. The three remaining Linear Guilders who previously faced the eliminated contestant will each play each other. Thus, each remaining Linear Guilder will have played three or more matches against other remaining Linear Guilders. The score of the remaining characters will be recomputed, and the cycle continues until only three remain. At that point, the Final Three will each play rematches against each other to determine the Ultimate Rival!
If, during the Elimination Phase, there is a tie for last place, the tied contestants will enter a Tiebreaking Round. The Tiebreaking Round includes everyone who is tied for last place, along with the wildcard partial Linear Guilders Yakyak (what kind of a stupid name is 'Yakyak' anyways?) and Ysometimesykysometimesyk (who is actually the MitD polymorphed into the form of a kobold). However, Yakyak and Ysometimesykysometimesyk are not actually eligible for advancement, due to not being True Linear Guilders. They are just there to shake up the Tiebreaking Round.
The true inner workings of the Tiebreaking Round are a far more interesting game than the other rou--
:thog: game?
No, no, not a literal game, it's just a--
:thog: that's okay, thog too hungry for sprinkles to play game

Well, I was going to monologue the rest of the evil tournament procedure right here, but I have to go to get sprinkles before anyone accuses me of mixing different strips together.

Kind of bummed that both ladies go against each other this round--I'm a fan of both. Ah well.

I thought about it, but I'm not going to be the person to cast a token vote for Yikyik.

I thought about it, but I'm not going to be the person to cast a token vote for Yikyik.
The token vote phenomenon is curious to me. Of course, folks should vote however they like, but it's not as though Yikyik's feelings will get hurt if he's shut out. Is the token vote a function of an underdog mentality? Or is the idea that if there's a shut out, that would imply that the loser is utterly without merit? (To me, a shutout doesn't imply that the loser lacks merit--just that their inferiority to another option is widely accepted. But it seems there's something about a zero in a vote column that rubs some folks the wrong way.)

Personally, I just like kobolds, so even if I don't think any of the Linear Guild's trio really deserve to even be called "characters", I'd like them each to get at least one vote.

I don't really know, if I should really participate in this tournament. I have for almost no LG Members really strong(positive and negative) feelings and end up just voting always for the guys with more appearances.

When this syndrome catches me, my reasoning is more like "I know character A > character B, but i want to let you know that I appreciated also B".
(Of course, this only works if I effectively liked B)

(edit: usually it happens to me when we discuss about "best strip of this tenth", so it's not exactly a vote with zero score, but more to decide the second place)

Nale-Just a better character.
Sabine-Succubus beats dwarf.
Yikyik-Original member? Check. Kobold? Check. Belkar in lizard drag? Check. Not a gnome or a druid? Check & check.
