View Full Version : Pathfinder [PF] How to build an Earth wizard (preferably Dwarf)?

Greetings fellow forumites,

I would like your opinion on the subject of an Earth Wizard. For some reason, I have a liking to the idea of a Wizard with a connection to stone. What would in your opinion be a cool but effective way to create one?

- A first idea is a Dwarven Wizard with the Earth Speaker racial alternate trait and a specialization on Earth. However, the loss of +2 in Int will hurt a lot.

- Another would be a crazy crossblooded Dwarven sorcerer, with Empyreal and Earth Elemental bloodline, or possible Shaitan or Deep Earth. That would be more effective, but the build will hurt on the spell department.

-Finally, could perhaps some sort of refluffed Druid work? I am not sure that the Druid spell list works very well, strange as it sounds.

Whatever you do, stick Earth Dreamer on there, it's awesome.

It's not actually all that powerful, or it's not all that powerful for a druid, but a druid running goliath druid substitution levels (RoS, 151) has a lot of earth flavor to it. The druid list is reasonably suited to earthery too, with stone shape, stone metamorphosis (Underdark, 61), and the top of the line, oreads from the fiend folio for spontaneously summoned earthquakes out of 6th level slots.

I was sure I hand a Pathfinder tag up there, but somehow it is not visible.

Earth Dreamer is a 3.5 thing, right?

A shaman binding a stone spirit, & Lore/Arcane Enlightenment hex when you get a wandering hex seems to me to be the way to go. Maybe get an improved familiar (earth elemental) at 5th level.

Well it is kind of new but did you take a look at spheres of power? It makes pretty much any concept playable from level 1 ... especially exotic stuff like earth wizard.
Cut some stone out of the floor and use telekinesis to hurl it at your opponents. Make stones weightless and hurl them. Build walls out of stone.

The options are endless.

It is third party however (pretty ****ing great at that though).

If you're willing to convert 3.5, then you could try using a variety of stuff from Races of Stone. Prestige classes in particular would be of use; isn't one like runecaster or something? I remember liking that one.

Not getting an INT bonus hurts the dwarven wizard and the powers for the Earth school I would say are so-so. The good news is the bonus spells are pretty rockin' (heh) so it's ultimately pretty playable. For your familiar I'd actually hold off on the Improved Familiar until 7th for a mephit. The earth meld of an elemental is great for scouting but I'd rather have a dust mephit for the flight and SLA. If you do stick with the the elemental consider the Mauler archetype from the new Familiar Folio and just pick up terran as a bonus language.

Sadly the crossblooded sorcerer is incompatible with wildblooded bloodlines such as Empyreal. It's stupid and I'd probably let it fly knowing how hurting you'd be for spell selection. I'm not your DM though so bear it in mind and know that it's the weaker option anyway.

Dwarven druid with Earth domain is great. Still one of my favorite characters (I think it was my first in pathfinder actually.) I'd skip on Mountain and Cave archetypes unless you're going for shenanigans (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Q9ndnKFdR8WWrgkP6fVbCtFvjE8zhMHStexwZ4-xs4Q/edit). Focus on summoning, walls, stone shape, and if you get the caves subdomain you can rock some pit spells.

I second the shaman too. If you pick up the witch hex slumber (hard not to honestly) then you want to worship Grundinnar son of Torag (http://www.pathfinderwiki.com/wiki/Grundinnar) so you can snag the Honeyed Words (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/traits/religion-traits/honeyed-words) trait. Even better if your DM will allow Ability Focus on a hex.

Any character above might benefit from Nature Bond->Animal Ally->Spirit's Gift (Stone). The cat is probably the most solid choice but I give you bonus points if you get a horse or a pony. (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/8a/40/3d/8a403d672789f5bba12a4c5338c4c2d9.jpg)

Have you looked at the Elementalist Wizard (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/wizard/arcane-schools/paizo---arcane-schools/elemental-arcane-schools) variants from UM? Earth (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/wizard/arcane-schools/paizo---arcane-schools/elemental-arcane-schools/earth) or Metal (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/wizard/arcane-schools/paizo---arcane-schools/elemental-arcane-schools/metal) would work well for this.

Thanks for the answers everyone! I think I will go for an Earth druid after all, focusing on earth spells. Not very optimised, but hey, fun after all.

Especially with Caves domain and Menhir Savant.

Check out the Kineticist from the Occult Adventures Playtest. It's not a spellcaster, but it does seem like a lot of fun. Added bonus, constitution is one of the 2 abilities that are important for the Kineticist.

Another option depending on how set you are on Wizard, make a sorcerer with the earth elemental bloodline. It lets you convert any spell that has a damage type to acid damage (fireball? No giant ball of acid!). You don't get the knowledges that a wizard gets but it might work for your idea.
