At about one in the afternoon, the sky above Breland was filled with explosions.

Trailing fire, and not all of it from the elemental ring that encircled it, an airship of unusual manufacture sank out of the clouds and landed, with an earthshaking crash, at the eastern edge of the forest northwest of Baran's Keep.

Though some locals who observed the phenomenon reported seeing "great silver flying creatures, like angels" around the crash site, this would not be deemed relevant by the authorities until much later, when it was too late.

Now a burning, smoking ruin, the ship settles into the newly carved crater in the earth... just waiting for someone to invesitage and search for survivors... or plunder...

Casfal, his ivory mask gleaming in the afternoon light, approaches the crash site on a rented horse. Eventually the horse grows too skittish of the smoke and flames, and Casfal dismounts to continue his approach on foot, tying his mount to a handy tree.

Ike d'Cannith

"By the Five Nations!"

A young red-haired man in his early 20s stands up, having seen the crash through the window of his one-room home. He clearly bears the weakest version of the Mark of Making on his left hand. "How could an airship just crash like that? Someone must have tampered with it!" He puts down his book, A Brief History of Battle Tactics During the War of the Mark, Third Edition, volume five of twenty-three.

"Whatever the case," he states, "there might be survivors. I have to go see!"

He walks toward the door of his home, and picks up his supplies. A long wooden staff, one well-kept backpack full of useful items, and a bag containing items that aren't so easy to carry are all on the list, as is a strange, translucent, yellow orb that appears to be glowing with some sort of energy.

Ike borrows a horse from one of the residents of the village he lives in, and rides to the crash site.

Wrench

Wrench was with McCormick when they received word that a Lyrandar Airship had crashed. As the two closest representatives of the House, they were asked to investigate the crash, help any survivors, and if possible, recover the ship and cargo before it was robbed.

Upon reaching the crash site, Wrench sees that others are already at the scene. The warforged raises his voice and calls out "Halt! That is a Lyrandar Airship. Who are you and what are you doing at this crash site?"

Wrench displays a Signet Brooch showing he is a member of House Lyrandar.

Growling lowly to himself, the warforged would have smiled had he been blessed with the ablity to do so. As the burning airship sailed the horizon, explosions drawing the attention of even deaf men, Brute changed his course from towards the local tavern, to the intresting new business proposial that just showed itself. Hell, opporunity usually doesn't come knocking. Shipwrecks meant survivors and parts. Both meant good business.

Reaching the area, the warforged stopped dead. Others were already there... Now how was he going to handle that?

"I was ordered to clean up the mess. Wrecks cause panic. Bad for business..."
He said to the badge-flashing other.

"Tira Mirron on the grill!" Achille blasphemes in suprise when he sees one of the airships crash. Even though he's on his last day of supplies, he runs toward the smoking crater from the path he's on, hoping that perhaps somebody worth saving might be saved from it.

With the warforged's demands, he stutters "I-I-I I saw the crash...I'll go away if you don't want me to help..." he trails off, ashamed of himself for no rational reason.

"I don't mean to be rude sir but lets get into the wreckage and start looking for survivors. Your aid in this task will not go overlooked by House Lyrandar."

Visibly irked at the interloper that appeared from the trees for being less than forth coming, "You," he said pointing at Achille, "come here with me, I need to speak with you." McCormick walks up swiftly and gently guides the man away at the elbow.

Quitely, but if anyone decides to swing by and eavesdrop... although they'll be clearly going out of their way, "If you are here to loot I advise you strongly to leave the area now and I will forget your name and face. But if you have business with this craft or the house then you best tell me your sir-name."

The wreckage seems stable for now, but the continuing fires could change that within a fairly short amount of time. Even from the outside, however, it appears obvious that the cargo hold has sustained very little damage- the interior of the ship has been so heavily reinforced that the doors are even still locked... though the locks themselves don't appear to be in great shape.

Curiously, the salvagers would likely note that the airship doesn't actually have any identifying crests or symbols on it. If it is a Lyrander airship, the house didn't feel the need to mark it.

The crew of the ship has faired less well- their bodies are litterred throughout the remains of the ship in varying degrees of recognizability. Curiously, a few of them don't appear to have been killed by the fall... at least one crewman seems to have been impaled by what appears to be a seven foot crossbow bolt.

Then, rather abruptly, a piece of rubble shifts, and a middle-aged man pushes himself into view, groaning and holding a bloody tear in his shirt.

[I can't help but notice we seem to have six players. Lord Iames, I had you down for group 2. If you had your heart absolutely set on joining these guys, I guess you can stay, but if you don't mind we can either retcon your appearance or, even better, work it into the story in an insidious manner. :D]

Achille is easily able to free the man, but unfortunately Wrench isn't going to be able to help him much- when his hand is oulled away from his wound, a shard of metal is found lodged in his body, going all the way through his torso, severing his spine, and opening up his belly. He doesn't seem to be aware of what's going on around him.

"Actually built them... can't believe it... shot us down... without taking a scratch... king was right... never... should have started... the project..."

His eyes suddenly focus on Wrench, and he takes the warforged's hand in a vicelike grip.

"The prototypes... get them... to Wroat... you'll be... rewarded... all you want... just don't... let them fall into anyone else's hands...!"

Those are the last words he manages to get out. An instant later, Casfal's crossbow bolt shatters the cargo lock, and the hold's door creaks open.

The man turns out to be Captain Morgan Fourwood of the Breland military. The rest of the crew have papers that identify them as Breland soldiers. None of the others are alive.

The six "prototypes" are about sixteen feet high, made of a dull gray metal and looking more or less like huge suits of armor with somewhat pronounced pauldrons on the left shoulder. In fact, as you approach them, you notice that their stomach and chest plates are opened up, revealing a space inside large enough for a medium humanoid, each of which contains what looks like another much smaller and lighter suit of armor, though it doesn't seem to be designed to protect the extremities so much as just... be strapped to them.

Each of the prototypes has an enormous battleaxe sheathed on the back of its waist, and on the far wall there are a number of large lockers, one of which has fallen open to reveal an enormous crossbow. Stencilled on the wall above the prototypes is the word "Kothar."

Wrench discovers that the armor is not only really big, it is enchanted, though the exact nature of those enchantments are nebulous. Needless to say, the constructs are easily far more durable than they appear, and their weapons are likely far deadlier. The metalwork itself is exquisite- masters have toiled on these titans of steel, and judging by the initials carved into out of the way bits of the armors, these masters represented multiple races and disciplines. Brute comes to much the same conclusion, though he can't identify all the telltale marks, or the more arcane adjustments that have been made.

Ike's guess proves to be correct- after Casfal and Achille begin strapping themselves in, they finds the larger armor, with not inconsiderable effort, mimicking their movements. It takes some getting used to, but ultimately the huge constructs limit the investigator's movements no more than a heavy suit of armor. The chestplates are closed with a simple lever and locking mechanism, allowing the pilot to see out through the openings in the armor's "helmets", a couple of mirrors allowing them limited vision from behind as well.

Eventually, a little further investigation reveals storage spaces on the armors' backs, assumably for personal belongings, and that the control straps are adjustable- they can become loose enough to accomodate a warforged, and when tightened would allow even someone as small as a halfling to control the bestial creation.

The weapons lockers contain four crossbows, two heavily-built while two are of the repeating variety, four boxes of bolts, and eight javelins, all appropriately large enough to be utilized by the constructs. The constructs have racks on their rear waist armor that seem designed to accomodate a box of bolts or a bundle of four javelins.

It seems obvious, then, that the prototypes are weapons.

Outside the cargo hold, the wreck is starting to settle. Casfal and Wrench are easily able to clamber over the rubble. Wrench finds that his stride has noticably increased (can travel 40 ft. as a move action), especially considering that he is technically wearing a really big and complicated suit of armor.

And he apparently isn't the only one who wants it. The moment Wrench clears the crater caused by the airship's crash, an ogre leaps out from behind a piece of rubble and, roaring like a beast, smacks Wrench's suit across the helmet with a large club.

Wrench doesn't feel a thing. If anything, the ogre's club is looking a little splintered.

McCormick starts strapping himself in- looks like it'll take a little longer for him to completely encase himself in the Kothar, the control system's pretty simple, but there's about a million little buckles to do up.

Achille's axe bursts into flame and scores a deep gash across the Ogre's chest, prompting a scream of agony from the beast.

Brute clears the cargo hold and finds himself within easy distance of the battle.

Wrench strikes out with supernatural power, but the Ogre just barely manages to avoid the blow.

Casfal has a good view of the surrounding area from the Kothar. He doesn't see anything else moving within his range of vision.

Ike's crossbow loads smoothly, ready to fire.

The Ogre puts a hand over its wound, glares darkly at Achille, and delivers an awesome blow to the Kothar's midsection. The metal armor bows inward from the force of the strike, but Achille himself remains unharmed.

Either way, Wrench and I are heading for Wroat as I'd like to know more about these inventions. We can all guess that these will be worth a tidy sum to someone who wants them, rather than trying to go through a fence who will rip you off six ways till sun down." Upon closer inspection, the huge crossbow bolts seem to carry some residual magic, as if they were fired from a magical weapon (doubt that's RAW but go with it).

The airship is a total loss- even a cursory examination would reveal that almost every component is damaged beyond repair. The ship's timbers are splintered, the elemtnal ring is a ruined mess. The cargo hold is still salvageable, but what would anyone want with an enormous dented metal box?

The spider's eyes take on an eerie green glow as it turns towards Brute and leaps at his Kothar, flailing with its legs and fangs. It scratches up the armor's paint job a bit, but doesn't suceed in dealing any real damage. Brute's axe cuts deeply into it, spraying purple-ish ichor, but the spider doesn't seem to register the damage.

(Wrench and Brute are now easily within reach of the spider, Casfal, you can take that 18, I guess. McCormick can walk up to the spider and attack on his next turn. Time for the next turn's actions. Ike, you gonna do anything this round?)

Wrench and Brute deliver punishing blows to the spider, sending up further sprays of ichor, but also revealing something disturbing- beneath the exoskeleton and organic tissue, the spider is full of what looks supsiciously like metallic rods.

And instant later Ike's crossbow bolt impacts with the thing's body, and it explodes, sending pieces of shrapnel whizzing through the air like the birth of the universe. When the dust clears, pretty much everybody's Kothar is splattered with spider guts and so full of metal shards that they look like really messy porcupines.

(Just making sure nobody felt slighted. ;) Someone tell me if you want to take an action before this next bit.)

A few minutes later the group hears a strange noise. Far above them there is a loud whirring noise that sounds quite a bit like something large hurtling through the air. Looking upwards, the holes that the spider's death throes have blasted in the foliage allow them to see a pair of huge glittering silver objects flying past. They look vaguely humanoid in shape, with great glistening angel wings, but they are too high for much more detail than that to be made out.

The objects bank to the left and come back around, but before you can determine if they're actively heading back towards you or not, a massive roaring noise literally causes the ground to tremble. With a noise that sounds like a cross between a lion's roar and the grinding of enormous gears, a metallic feline shape blasts into the sky, trailing green fire. It smashes into one of the flying objects and effortless tears it apart, showering the forest several hundred yards away with flaming debris.

The other flying object turns sharply and seems to fire a flaming projectile at the feline shape. The shape calmly dodges the projedctile and blasts through the other flying object, also reducing it to scrap. Releasing another roar, this one unmistakably triumphant in nature, it dives back earthwards. Judging by the arc of its descent, it's landing another several hundred yards ahead of you, within the forest between you and Wroat.

The mechanical beast is truly a work of art, a great lion rendered in perfectly sculpted metal. Its armor seems to have been constructed of mithral or a substance very similar to it, and the entirety of the creation is covered in delicate scrollwork and skillfully carved details. Its mane is constructed of beautifully polished gold, and the beast's eyes are like great emerald windows.

It remains silent until the clearing is approached, but as Wrench and Achille approach it suddenly rises to its feet and turns towards them.

A voice speaking a strange language apparently stops it from attacking. At the edge of the lake, hitherto hidden by the lion's paws, is a tall man dressed in an elaborate golden robe. He slowly turns towards you, revealing slightly pointed ears, slitted golden cat-like eyes, and shoulder length black hair. The flying mechanoids might have known this and spared their lives, but they attacked me before I could explain to them that they courted certain death. I imagine their leader on the ground was less than pleased, for he ran before I could met out the same punishment upon him."

The man's accent is bizarre- it sound vaguely elven, but he places too much emphasis on his consonants, which makes it sound like he's used to speaking giant. The language he spoke before, though, had no words in common with either of those tongues.

Achille's leap carries him into the main group. His first blow cleaves off his opponent's arm, leaving him unconscious and bleeding on the ground. The second ogre is cut deeply through the stomach, but manages to deliver a returning blow, though it simply glances off the Kothar's armor.

The fifth ogre, laughing cruelly, rushes towards Casfal. Anavel, however, exclaims in his strange language, and Leonidas leaps forward and pounces on the ogre like a cat attacking a rabbit. The creature screams horrifically as the mechanical beast tears it open.
