ok my player asked a question i do not know the answer too. If you are swordsage 1, X non-initiator 2, you count as an initiator level of 2. does this grant you more maneuvers known and can be readied or only after you take another level in swordsage?

As with spellcasting classes, the adquisition of new maneuvers and stances depends on your class level, so yeah while you would have an IL of 2 in this example you would only get new maneuvers when you take another level of Swordsage or get the Martial study feat.

After you take the next level in swordsage.

What it WILL do is let the character qualify for higher level maneuvers at a lower class level, though.

yes, so he would have 2 class levels of swordsage, which would allow you to take only first level manouvers.
but because he has two other classes making it 3 instead of two, with his second level of swordsage you could get 2nd level manouvers.
