View Full Version : Can you CHOOSE to grapple if you're affected by Freedom of Movement?

The RAW on FoM doesn't say anything about not being able to hold something, just that you automatically succeed on any roles to resist/escape artist/etc. If you're FoM'ed can you:

grapple with impunity?
not grapple at all?
succeed on your turn but fail on your enemies?
something else (to cover all other eventualities)?

Apologies in advance if this has been dealt with extensively in previous posts

By RAW, Freedom of Movement simply allows you to escape any grapple you don't want. It doesn't stop you from continuing a grapple if it's beneficial to you, but it doesn't give you any benefit to grappling offensively. If you want to pin or attack while grappled, or if your opponent tries to escape the grapple and you want to stop him, you can still do those things but you have to roll for them just like you were without Freedom of Movement. The moment that the grapple becomes unfavorable to you, you can still escape without having to roll as long as freedom of movement is active.

That's what I thought/was hoping. Thanks for the confirmation

Which leaves the fun grappling still an open option. Take that any way you want :smalltongue:.

I don't see any reason you couldn't start a grapple, but if somebody attempts to grapple you then you do not get a choice. The freedom of movement kicks in and you resist the grapple, even if you would want to enter into the grapple.

If you are in a grapple the freedom of movement only kicks in if you attempt to escape. Incidently this means that if you manage to cast freedom of movement while grappled (FoM is a decent one to still spell) then you still need to use another action to actually escape, and you probably don't have the action spare until next round.

The thing is, you don't have to make a grapple check to resist a grapple, right? You should be able to willingly allow someone to start grappling with you, just as much as you can allow someone to punch you in the face.
