scabbard + belt

is there any reason a DM wouldn't allow a Melee to wield a scabbard with a belt? besides the rules saying they take the same slot. it seems a little dorky to me. a scabbard is not a belt and allowing a melee to use both would not only be flavorful for them but increase some of their playability.

Magical Scabbards do not occupy the belt slot in general. They're as slotless as a potion or wand.

Frankly, given how many belts the average D&D character in every single illustration is wearing, belts should also be slotless.

Easy: Those are all Belts of Battle. You burn up one for a full-round action, free action to drop it, and repeat.

Problem (minor): You can only free-action drop something you're holding. For something you're wearing, you'll need to remove it first. As near as I can tell, the belting is similar to that on the shield that goes on one's arm, and that's a move action to loose.

Magic Item Compendium has Scabbards in the Tools section instead of the Waist section.

There are also rules for combining the effects of multiple items in the same slot, allowing you to pay extra for a "Monk's Healing Belt of Battle and Magnificence" or "Ring of Feather Fall and Jumping and Regeneration" or whatnot, in case you find two scabbards you like :smallsmile:
