Greetings all tagonists, both of the 'pro' and 'an' variety, and welcome to

The Ultimate Linear Guild Tournament

In which all past members of the Linear Guild compete for the title of Ultimate Rival!

The Contestants:
1. :nale: Nale (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0043.html)
2. :sabine: Sabine (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0043.html)

10. http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g68/Cats_Are_Aliens/Banners/Yukyuk.png Yukyuk (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0790.html)

The Process
Each week, I will post three head-to-head matches between competitors, and y'all will be able to vote once in each. Voting will last for one week, after which I will post another three matches. This will continue until all Linear Guilders have faced three other competitors. At this point, a score for each Linear Guilder will be computed. The score of a competitor depends on the scores of those they defeated, which in turn depends on the scores of who they defeated. It is a variation of the PageRank algorithm used by Google.
Subsequently, the tournament will enter the Elimination Phase. During the Elimination Phase, the Linear Guilder with the lowest score will be eliminated. The three remaining Linear Guilders who previously faced the eliminated contestant will each play each other. Thus, each remaining Linear Guilder will have played three or more matches against other remaining Linear Guilders. The score of the remaining characters will be recomputed, and the cycle continues until only three remain. At that point, the Final Three will each play rematches against each other to determine the Ultimate Rival!
If, during the Elimination Phase, there is a tie for last place, the tied contestants will enter a Tiebreaking Round. The Tiebreaking Round includes everyone who is tied for last place, along with the wildcard partial Linear Guilders Yakyak (what kind of a stupid name is 'Yakyak' anyways?) and Ysometimesykysometimesyk (who is actually the MitD polymorphed into the form of a kobold). However, Yakyak and Ysometimesykysometimesyk are not actually eligible for advancement, due to not being True Linear Guilders. They are just there to shake up the Tiebreaking Round.
The true inner workings of the Tiebreaking Round are a far more interesting game than the other rou--
:thog: game?
No, no, not a literal game, it's just a--
:thog: that's okay, thog too hungry for sprinkles to play game

Well, I was going to monologue the rest of the evil tournament procedure right here, but I have to go to get sprinkles before anyone accuses me of mixing different strips together.

It will almost certainly be closer than matches 13-14.

And I've got a question :

It seems to me that Yik-Yik will be the first eliminated linear guilder. Let's admit he is.

So, according to the stated rules, the 3 opponent will compee against one another.

So we will have 3 matches :
Z vs Pompey
Z vs Leeky
Pompey vs Leeky

BUT, we allready had Pompey vs Leeky.

So what happen then ?

Oh, right, this was supposed to have ended already. The Initial Phase is now complete!

13. Thog vs Yukyuk 21-1
14. Zz'dtri vs Yokyok 20-3
15. Yikyik vs Pompey 9-14

At the end of the Initial Phase, Yukyuk, Yokyok, and Yikyik are tied for last place. Which means the next thing is a Tiebreaker Round! The Tiebreaker round features all those tied for last place, along with some partial Linear Guild members Tarquin, Malack, Kilkil, Yakyak, Ysometimesykysometimesyk, and Qarr!
And since it is the end of a Phase, there will be a one week break before the Tiebreaking begins (i.e., the next matches will start this coming Monday).

Just my 2 cents, but....

Instead of wasting a week voting on a tiebreaker for last place, why not just break the tie with how many votes each character got?

Bird
2015-02-11, 06:01 PM
The tiebreaker is going to feature some serious contenders. Tarquin & Malack have a whole lot of fans--more than any of the "full members" save Thog or Sabine, I'd wager. Do they get a chance to "graduate" out of the tiebreaker round back into the main competition, or is this strictly the contest for last place?

Alas... those poor, unappreciated kobolds. :smallfrown:

(Not that I can even remember which one was which off the top of my head.)

I agree. There is no need to introduce another characters.

Particularly ones that, as noted, would very likely be more popular than most of the characters already involved.

Wait, you're also adding MORE linear guild members after the original round of voting has ended? Why? Did they get a bye or something?

I'm really not understanding the logic behind this tournament.

Rakoa

I can't see Tarquin or Malack coming out of this tournament without trouncing the competition, especially since they haven't been involved at all yet. I mean, Tarquin was in the top 3 for the Favourite Character Tournament, as I recall. Maybe even number two.

Because it is needlessly complicated. Because it's the Linear Guild.

Yes, I will explain the full process in the next thread.

Yes, I will explain the full process in the next thread.

Well, the usual process is to lay out the rules BEFORE the contest starts, not just make them up as you go along.

Can you imagine after the first round of a sports playoffs the commissioner said Oh, BTW we're going to let in 2 more teams, just thought you should know"?

...that's the best answer possible to that question. I love it.

But now, the tournament has to feature gratuitous rocket skates for me to feel satisfied. :smallwink:

Yes, if Nale was the commissioner. The head of the player's union would probably have an anvil fall on his head.

With the Elf in the lead, that's right, it all comes back to me now. Good ol' Tarquin! To be fair, that was before strips #914-915, when Big T started losing many fans. But yep, he and Malack would probably shuffle things up a lot.

Well, the two names he mentioned were not characters in the story, so I guess they could have been anybody.
