What creature am I thinking of?

Random Question while I'm awake in the middle of the night for no discernible reason.

I swear, while randomly surfing through splatbooks, that I came across some kind of creature that would capture beings smaller than itself, and use them as fuel for it's own special abilities: first their spell slots, then their life points, and finally their souls. I was under the assumption that it was a construct of some kind, unlike the Devourer, which is the closest thing I can find in Core. It also didn't need to kill a target in order to have it contained inside it, and in fact, for some reason, I thought it required such a living being for the sake of power...

These details are SUPER fuzzy... did I just make up a monster, or is this indeed a thing from somewhere?

Cool creature, but I may have fact-checked the wrong deepspawn, because the only one I can find doesn't seem to have any ability like that; just being able to spawn creatures it's eaten... which is actually a rather scary trait, actually.


Other than that i'm unsure, but Silva has been using a similar monster in our IRL campaign if you want to ask him.

Scary, but unfortunately nowhere near what I remember. The creature captures the entire body of the victim, not just it's brain unlike the nehThalggu, and the subject could be rescued from the monster's inside, while the Brain Collector's victims seem like they're going to need at least a Raise Dead.

I learned a few things from it.

Holy crap, the Essence Reaver is way under cr'ed.
The Thrullg is pretty cool, and kinda similar, but not quite what I had in mind.
Not the Infernal, either.
The Nishruu has convinced me that most writers conceive projects while high.
I don't know what book the Gazenth is from.... where do people get these names?!
Arcane Ooze is awesome, and something I'll need to remember for later. Yet, while it's so close, it's still so far.

It doesn't... but at the same time, I almost feel like you're on the right track. People seem to be thinking more "Let me eat some of the target's body or brain or magic", when I don't think that's quite the right mindset. Basically, I don't think a victim of this creature is more "Food Om-nom-nom", but more "Fuel! Hook up the new Battery!".

Damn I'm so mad that I can't get this!

... honestly, the most identifying thing that comes to mind is that I don't think it's in a proper 3.5 source book... and that it might be some kind of weird Golem. There's even a chance that it might come from one of the books-that-get-way-too-much-publicity, but I'll probably check them last.
