Welcome to The Stick Awards II: Second Edition!

The Stick Awards are handed out to the best strips of all time as chosen by our fellow Playgrounders.

This week we are covering the comic strips 701 through 710.

For full details about the Stick Awards, please check out the main thread here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=283609).

To read more about the original Stick Awards, created by Nazzo, the 102nd, please read his thread here. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34791)

To vote in this thread, simply state which comic of the ten listed is your favorite. Bolding the number of the comic (Like this) helps it stand out.

Voting for this week will close on February 10th, 4pm EST. Any votes made after that will NOT count toward the totals.

Last time, http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g68/Cats_Are_Aliens/Banners/DarthV.png 639 - If They Pull a Knife... (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0639.html) decided it had quite enough of all of the things out there trying to stop it from achieving its glory. So to settle things once and for all it decided to cast FINALICIDE, and neatly dealt with its competition in a most convincing manner. Unbeknownst to it, it's trials and tribulations aren't quite over yet. Whatever repercussions there are for this deed will not be known until it faces its next challenge in the Best of the Thousand tournament.

Such matters will be left for another day, however, as the Stick Awards wait for no strip. Indeed the next batch of worthies is beckoning us for approval.

So lets not keep them waiting any longer as we vote in....

Great selection this week! It's a tough battle between 704 and 709. I love strips where characters reach inflection points in their growth, so I'd be delighted to see that win. But ultimately, with combination of fascinating world-building, killer writing, and, most memorably, a puzzling theological revelation whose meaning I'm *still* pondering hundreds of strips later, 704: Dead Men Give No Speeches is an even better choice.

704, for the interesting conflux of religion and political propaganda.

I think I shall go with #704, though I do find 702 very amusing and 709 very charming.

I dunno, I liked the reminder that many races are unfairly biased against hobgoblins, and the idea that the goblin nation isn't one big happy family.

701 - Curtains for You, because I just re-read Start of Darkness; Redcloak's lines to his own reflection become all the more tragic when you realize that he's talking to his younger brother's image. :smallfrown:

+1 for Danging LKnights: 706 - He's Not Even Supposed to Be Here Today

As much as I agree with 704 that a legitimate peacetime banana should seem relaxed, I think it a more practical realization that a spatula would be helpful in regard to 707.

702: One for the History Books
I love Gobbotopia (especially that it's not exclusively goblin and welcomes people from any of the other marginalized species). Plus, he details in the history book (like the pastiche of the US national anthem) are great; it has a flavour of propaganda, but fairly innocent propaganda ("the most powerful, influential, and generally interesting country ever".) And the Cliffport line is great, too.

704 would probably be my second choice, for the refreshingly direct theological revelation. Really, that's enough reason to be on the goblins' sides, isn't it? - a deity who's straightforward and to-the-point, without a bunch of obscure symbolism. (But there's still the intriguing ambiguity of whether the "this" in "Don't screw this up" refers to the Plan or to Gobbotopia.) And he's in favour of turning to trade, diplomacy, and negotiations rather than war now that the goblins have a functioning state; he comes across as being quite reasonable.

709

Sir IS appearing in this book.

Sir Not-Appearing-In-This-Film actually did appear for a brief second in the scene where they were listing the members of the Round Table, so calling O-Chul by that title is historically accurate. :smallwink:

704 gets my vote.

(But there's still the intriguing ambiguity of whether the "this" in "Don't screw this up" refers to the Plan or to Gobbotopia.)Jirix did say "... but he had a message for you. Regarding the Plan and all". The assumption that "this" refers to the Plan is a fairly safe assumption. Sure, it's possible that Jirix was mistaken, but I'd say it's likely the Dark One is nearly as focused on the plan as Redcloak is.

In a hurry, so gonna get straight to the vote. 709, because it showed yet more growth of the MitD and it had Sir Not-Appearing-in-This-Book.

Can't go wrong there.

And with that....

VOTING IS NOW CLOSED!

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g68/Cats_Are_Aliens/Banners/Jirix.png 704 Dead Men Give No Speeches (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0704.html) is the winner this week. It now moves on to the Best of the Hundred tournament.
