Astral demons are not actual demons, despite the claims of the few who have encountered them and survived. Most often they are mistaken for deformed dretches. They wander the Astral Plane in groups, attacking any intruders into what their narrow minds consider their domain. Physically, they are not the most imposing enemies. However, their innate spell- and psi-like abilities wreak havoc on sentient beings.

They were bright blue, as if they radiated a sinister light of their own. Three spindly arms came off of a bloated torso, ending in four-fingered claws. A single tail came off of the bottom, covered in gross hair that seemed to refract their inner lights sickeningly. Then there was the head, off the top of the blob-like torso. Three glowing red eyes, with horizontally slit pupils, gazed emotionlessly at him, with a toothy maw below pulled in a wide grin.

COMBAT

Painful Memory (Sp/Psi): When an astral demon strikes with a claw attack, it may use its connection to the realm of the mind to draw up a memory of pain from the target's past, present, or future, dealing 1d6 points of additional damage. The creature makes a Will save, DC 17, for half damage. On a failed save, the target also takes a -2 penalty on all attack rolls, skill checks, and ability checks for 1d4 rounds thereafter. The save DC is Charisma-based with a +2 racial bonus, and the ability is the equivalent of a second level spell/power. This ability works only against creatures with an Intelligence score.

Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, an astral demon must hit with a claw attack. It can then attampt to start a grapple as a free action (ending a full-attack if the claw was part of one) without provoking an attack of opportunity.

Mental Agony (Sp/Psi): When an astral demon succeeds in a grapple, it automatically subjects its opponent to Painful Memory twice per round, sapping them of their mental strength. In addition to damage from Painful Memory, the grappled foe must succeed on a DC 13 Will save or take one point of Wisdom damage (DC is Charisma-based). This ability works only against creatures with an Intelligence score.

Demoralizing Aura (Sp/Psi): An astral demon continually subjects foes within to an effect similar to that of the demoralize power (DC 14, Charisma-based). This ability works only against creatures with an Intelligence score.

Seems okay. I would have opted for CR 5 in this case. One thing, though, if it ain't a Demon you should probably stay away from nomenclature that suggests otherwise, but nothing springs to mind as an alternative (maybe Astral Blob?).

Adjusted the fluff-text to fit the concept better, and better explain the name in-game. Any opinions on the effectiveness of the Astral Demon in battle or other critiques would be greatly appreciated.

The name does have it's uses. Imagine some guy is giving a quest to the PCs. He says: "YOU MUST FIGHT THE ASTRAL DEMONS!!" That will freak them out even though they aren't demons.
