Here's the tier system (http://www.brilliantgameologists.com/boards/?topic=1002.0), the Tier 1 classes are Wizard, Cleric, Druid, Archivist, Artificer, and Erudite. Just picking strong classes doesn't make a strong character, it depends on how well the character is optimized and played, and it also depends on what you want the character to be good at.

Generally you want to pick an active class and a passive class, and make sure they have a decent amount of synergy. For example, Factotum is often combined with any Int-based class (Wizard, Archivist, Erudite) because it's a superb passive class and it gets tons of Int synergy. Swordsage is a good choice to gestalt with a Wis-based class (Cleric, Druid) for synergy and because it gives you tons of utility and passive benefits. Picking something like Wizard//Cleric is a bad choice, because you have two active classes and can only cast one spell per round, and you've got almost no dump stats so you won't be as good as character who only needs a single casting stat.

There are a ton of good classes and builds, it really depends on what you want the character to be capable of. Do you want to keep the opponents from attacking and buff your party to victory, and always have a solution to any problem the party runs into? Wizard//Factotum. Do you want to use powerful melee attacks to destroy everything that crosses your path? Druid//Swordsage. Do you want to use a bow to snipe out anything that comes into view? Cloistered Cleric//Fighter. Do you want to call down fire and lightning to blast your enemies to tiny pieces? Erudite//Factotum. In any case you'll most likely want to include some multiclassing and/or prestige classes in whatever build you create, again depending on what you want the character to be capable of.
