I'm trying to come up with a custom treasure table and such, but there are just so many bad magical items, it's really, really hard to find good ones.

So, Just looking for everyone's favorite magical item, and why they like it.

Shadow Cloak (DotU): You're literally buying 3 uses/day of the Abrupt Jaunt ACF for 5,500 gold. It doesn't even need to come with the +1 Deflection and the possibly of gaining 1 round of concealment

Heward's Handy Haversack.

The only thing better than extradimensional storage space is always having the item you need on top of it (move action to retrieve an item).

Custom ring of continuous Protection From Evil. Not the *best* item if you can afford better, but great value for money.

Also from DotU, Ring of Anticipation. Only 6k to roll all your initiatives twice and take the better result. That's pretty great and it works for any character.

I like the Efficient Quiver (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Efficient_Quiver).

Armor of the Celestial Battalion (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Armor_of_the_Celestial_Battalion) sort of does this.

If you're proficient with javelins, the Gloves of Infinite Javelins from the manticore set of items in the back of the MIC are really nice. Free action to generate a +1 javelin made of force which lasts just long enough to hurl it and do damage to a target. You need not have quick draw nor a supply of javelins on hand to have your attack rate in quite respectable thrown weapons. In fact, if you have two weapon fighting and rapid shot, you can get two extra attacks for a -4 penalty to all your attack rolls, because the two feats technically stack.

Lyre of Building

If the proper chords are struck, a single use of this lyre negates any attacks made against all inanimate construction (walls, roof, floor, and so on) within 300 feet. This includes the effects of a horn of blasting, a disintegrate spell, or an attack from a ram or similar siege weapon. The lyre can be used in this way once per day, with the protection lasting for 30 minutes.
yeah yeah yeah - help defend against sieges... great... but here is the awesome part!

The lyre is also useful with respect to building. Once a week its strings can be strummed so as to produce chords that magically construct buildings, mines, tunnels, ditches, or whatever. The effect produced in but 30 minutes of playing is equal to the work of 100 humans laboring for three days. Each hour after the first, a character playing the lyre must make a DC 18 Perform (string instruments) check. If it fails, she must stop and cannot play the lyre again for this purpose until a week has passed.

ok - notice there is no cost associated with this construction? and no limit to the hours in a row you can spend playing the instrument?
a DC 18 perform check!?!? that's all - a bard, could pull that off at level 1 (taking 10 while having 4 ranks in perform:strings and a 14 CHA will do it for you, as you get a +2 from the instrument itself since it must be masterwork quality)

I did the calculations... It is possible to generate 4400gp worth of construction every hour of playing. While a warship could be made in just 5 1/2 hours of playing, castles take a bit more time. The cheapest one in the Stronhold Builder's Guide is 70,000gp which would only take 15 hourse of playing time to build... but it is really bare bones (Barely able to call it a castle) The DMG calls for Castles to be 500,000 gp, and HUGE Castles to by 2,000,000 gp... that would require 4 days, and 18 hours of straight Lyre Playing to pull off the normal sized one, and 19 days of straight playing to pull of the HUGE one. Not too shabby.

Given there aren't penalties for going without sleep (other than not being able to refresh spells) nothing is keeping the bard from making it rich as a Developer.
After 6 hours of playing - you could create something worth twice the price of the lyre itself - sell it at half cost - and now you've made your money back on the investment....

(This thing should have been an artifact - the item party's spend entire campaigns questing after..... so, yeah - its a good magic item)

It's a great item for a bard. My previous bard character used two (only usable once a week, so all day with one, then the other) to help rebuild a city after an earthquake.

But it doesn't provide the building materials. You still have to get the stone or wood with which the lyre constructs things. You might also need to provide the tools needed to quarry stone, cut down trees and mill lumber, etc.

I'm a big fan of the Rod of Ropes, from Complete Scoundrel. It's basically a hookshot, and who doesn't want to have a hookshot?

Healing Belts (MIC) are a must-have at low levels. They're really efficient, anyone can use them, and they're just plain handy to have around.

Also from the MIC, dang near every character can find a use for a Belt of Battle. You might only get the big effects once per day, but action economy is king, and if you can't find a use for a Belt of Battle when it matters most, you're not trying.

A completely different approach: Ask your players! They know best what items they want to have or would like to use.

To keep randomness, ask each of your players for multiple items, plus some consumables and the only thing left for you do to is combine them all into one table.
If you want, you could also include some other items of your choosing (for example from the suggestions given above).

I forget their name, but that comment reminds of those Marvelous Pigments/Paints. You need Craft (Painting) to use them but they are sweet.
