I recently took over a Skyrim-themed 3.5 game. Before I took over, the party met up with Barbas (http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Barbas), with the intent the party would meet with Clavicus Vile (http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Clavicus_Vile). However, the party hasn't done that, so they have an unkillable dog following them. (The Bard is the one who found Barbas, so that player is running the NPC.)

Clavicus Vile is a powerful evil deity in the Elder Scrolls universe. Barbas is his companion/conscience, who takes the form of a large dog.

For a while, we were using the stats of a Hellhound to represent Barbas. However, the party has gotten to level 9, and the Hellhound just isn't cutting it. I need a template I can stick on Barbas, or a new monster that I can use for stats that will make him moderately useful again. I don't want him to be as powerful as the party, but having an attack bonus above +5 would be nice. I don't care about HP or AC since he is unkillable anyway.

Is just advancing its HD an option?

Isn't the Nessian Warhound right there in the Hellhound entry? Or is it somewhere else?

Yup (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_AdYv8gYDw). More hit dice are fine. If this beast is intelligent, consider a class level or two.

Like levels of rogue. Those'd be useful.

Barbas as a rogue... I wish he could sneak to save his life. Or shut up for that matter, that dog talked too much.

If you want there's the Haraknin Canomorph from Fiend Folio, which has a few levels of barbarian and can shift to humanoid form.

Make him a Half-fiend Worg Dragonfire Adept?

It sure is. Nessian Warhound (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/hellHound.htm) is CR9, BTW.

Totemist into Soul Eater would be an interesting option. Thayan Gladiator is decent for natural attack based builds as well.
