View Full Version : What's the point of the Malconvoker's "Safe Summoning" class feature?

I don't get it. Presumably it's to dismiss the Planar Binding spell if the outsider breaks free of the summoning circle, but if it's already free of the circle, presumably it's free-willed and can hang around as long as it likes - since it can choose to attack you? Does it still vanish in that case, once you dismiss the spell?

Also, what kind of action is it for the outsider to use its spell resistance or Charisma to try to break free?

Dismiss means dismiss. The word is not used in the Summon Monster or Planar Ally spells, which have durations without the (D) indicator, so this suggests that the Malconvoker has a power not granted to other magic users who pull creatures from elsewhere. Specifically, the ability to tell them to get lost.

Actually, Summon Monster does have a (D), although Planar Binding doesn't. So does this ability only apply to Summon Monster, in which case it's pointless because they can't resist? Or is the default case that the Malconvoker can dismiss outsiders as a standard action, which Safe Summoning modifies to an immediate action, as you suggest? In which case, is that default actually stated anywhere?

It only affects summoned outsiders, explicitly, not called ones, so it has no interaction with Planar Binding.

In general, dismissing a spell is indeed a standard action, as specified in the rules for dismissing spells (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicOverview/spellDescriptions.htm).

Ah, got it. So this is for monsters that escape your control when you try to use Deceptive Summons. Thanks for the clarification!
