Venue
18th July

(Note: All Step-free routes avoid the tubes, for people who don't like going on the tube. I've given directions for buses, tubes, and all major stations. If your journey isn't covered, the Journey Planner on the TFL website is excellent (http://www.tfl.gov.uk) and will also take into account any delays, so it's worth checking on the day anyway.)

(If anyone is still unsure: 1. London transport makes it as easy to possible to find out which bus/tube/etc... to take. Busy areas and areas around stops and stations have excellent maps too. 2. I'll send my mobile number to anyone who asks. If you need help you can call me.)

(Finally, if I've missed anything important, please let me know.)

TUBE: Nearest stops are Goodge Street (Northern Line) and Tottenham Court Road (Northern Line) and Russell Square (Picadilly Line) in that order.

Tottenham Court Road and Goodge Street are on the same line, so if you're aiming for one but miss your stop you can just get off at the next one with very little lost.

From Tottenham Court Road tube station: Once out of the station head North. The easiest thing to do is find the Dominion theatre (you can't miss it: it's the big thing that says "Lord of the Dance" on it), which is on the North-East side of of the crossroads. Stand outside the theatre, with the theatre to your right, you're facing North. It's now you're 4th right.

From Goodge Street tube station: cross over the road and turn right down Tottenham Court Road. Take the second left.

BUSES:

59, 68, 91 or 168 Russell Square (stop H). It is then less than a half-mile walk. (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/''/18+Store+St,+London+WC1E+7DH,+UK/@51.5214807,-0.1299109,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x48761b30566a91 ed:0xc1691ca25001b965!2m2!1d-0.126401!2d51.523232!1m5!1m1!1s0x48761b2dd1692d99: 0x1f5247475ea87e4e!2m2!1d-0.1317454!2d51.5197558)

98 or 188 to Russell Square (Stop E) You walk past this stop on the route given for stop H, so just check that map.

10, 14, 24, 29, 73, 79, 134 or 390 bus to Chenies Street. This is then a 5 minute walk. (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Chenies+Street+(Stop+D),+United+Kingdom/18+Store+Street,+London,+UK/@51.5211085,-0.132033,18z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x48761b2e5734eb 69:0xeade922fccc3cf6e!2m2!1d-0.131818!2d51.522259!1m5!1m1!1s0x48761b2dd1692d99: 0x1f5247475ea87e4e!2m2!1d-0.1317454!2d51.5197558)

10, 14, 24, 29, 73, 134 or 390 bus to Percy Street. Cross over the road, turn left, and it's the first right. Literally a two minute walk.

8, 25, 55 or 98 bus to Tottenham Court Road Station. Keep heading along the road in the direction of travel (West) until you get to the Dominion theatre. Then follow the instructions in the tube section to walk from there.

27 or 88 to Drummond Street. Head South past Warren Street station and keep going down Tottenham Court Road. It's about a 15 minute walk from the bus stop.

TRAIN:

From Waterloo: Take the Northern Line Northbound to Tottenham Court Road or Goodge Street. Follow tube directions from there. (STEP-FREE route: 59, 69, 168 and 188 all go from Waterloo. (See "Buses" section.)

From Victoria: Take the Victoria Line north. You can change at Green Park to the Piccadilly Line and go to Russell Square, but it's a real pain to change there. Much easier to change at Warren Street onto the Northern Line heading South. Probably faster too. Get off at Goodge Street. STEP-FREE: Take the 73 bus to Percy Street.

From Kings Cross or St. Pancreas: Take the Piccadilly Line southbound, to Russell Square (1-stop). Follow tube instructions from there. STEP-FREE route: 10, 73, 390 buses all go from Kings Cross / St. Pancreas. Follow the bus instructions.

Euston: Take the Northern Line Southbound to Goodge Street, and follow tube instructions. STEP-FREE: Take the 10, 73, or 390 bus and follow bus instructions.

Liverpool Street: Take the Central Line Westbound to Holborn, and then change to the Piccadilly Line Northbound to Russell Square. (You can also walk from Holborn, but look up your own route if you fancy that. :-P (It's an easy enough walk, though.) STEP-FREE: Number 8 bus to Tottenham Court Road station. Follow bus instructions from there.

Paddington Station: Take the Circle line or Hammersmith & City line Eastbound to Euston Square. Turn left out of the station, and follow Gower St. south until the 5th right is Store St. STEP-FREE: Take the 27 bus Drummond Street.

FOOD
There is a menu. If you want to pre-order food, send Capt. Spanner (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/private.php?do=newpm&u=49745) a message before the 11th July, telling him what you'd like from their menu (http://www.faucetinn.com/college-arms/files/2011/04/College-arms-menu-Latest-01.12.2014.pdf).

Let discussion commence! Let festive epithalamia resound through these ancient halls! Let joy be unconfined. Let there be dancing in the streets, drinking in the saloons, and necking in the parlor.
Alternatively, let us decide on a date and venue for the meetup this summer, and I'll stop randomly quoting things. For a few minutes at least.

Time to start combing London for venues.

If the meet is in London I'll a) almost certainly make it (less a few dates) and b) be able to put some people up at mine overnight. (I'm cheaper than a hotel.)

I guess you really took what I said about us needing you to make decisions to heart, huh?
I wouldn't jump right to it being definitely London, we still have time for other people to volunteer (I'm pretty sure last thread Strawberries said Derby could be an option for summer). Obviously we don't want a repeat of last time, but we do still have 4-5 months before when we expect the meetup to be. It's good if we already have a likely option though - that's already a vast improvement on last time.

Eh, I just wanted to get the Master Post formatted up and ready (minus the tables); the London thing's still up in the air and noted as such.

Though one I'd very much like to be a reality. It's just easy to get to.

Could I suggest an easier way to get the table of possible dates posted instead of the usual one that tends to be a bit wonky at points?

Someone could start a Doodle poll with the dates listed, and each person wanting to chime in can just go to the poll and tick the dates they're available for.
Takes way less faffing about in the thread itself with people missing where the last version of the table is.

We have the Sacred Skills of Delegation. We know how to make people do the things that need doing.

Hey, if you're interested in coming to this meetup, make sure to fill out the Doodle poll. Early responses mean we can sort it all out now in order to be lazy later on.

EDIT2: 4th July is looking best so far, I think.

If I fill in the doodle poll is it possible for me to change my responses at a later date or am I stuck with them? Because there are one or two dates I'm not 100% sure on but I should be able to find out/decide on them for definite before too long. But then I don't want to have already filled it in and then say "Actually I filled it in wrong, this date should say this," etc.

My dates have been added- and at the moment I can be fairly flexible since most of my colleagues have been slow off the mark booking holiday this year. Ideally coming to a decision on the date some time soon would also be handy, just to prevent somebody taking those dates before I get to them.

Thufir
2015-02-28, 02:17 PM
I should note that my "No" respones for the 4th of July is not 100% set in stone - I'm supposed to be singing in a concert that day, but it's not out of the question for me to get out of it. That said, if I have to try and weasel out of the concert, it'd be easier if I knew pretty soon (I don't know why they have to plan the concert this far in advance, but apparently it's how they do it).
Relatedly, DD are you actually going to come if it's on a suitable date for you? Because you do have a history of residing in the Jibbers category.

Dallas-Dakota
2015-02-28, 02:41 PM
Considering I actually have a steady job and such now, if it's on a date I indicated as yes, there's a 85% chance I can come.(The main limiting factor is that I'm also saving up to go to Slovenia but I should have enough money for the trip+hotel if needed.)

So, yes.

The last two or three meetups I've ended up doing that in the later stages of arranging the meetup to try and boost attendance. Doing it earlier this time could be a good idea.

On numbers, I think the last meetup we eventually had 13 or 14 people, previously the 15-20 range has seemed more standard. The previous Newcastle meetup back in 2012 I think we had like 25 people.

Part of my thinking was that, by bringing it to the attention of former meetup attendees earlier rather than later we give them time to make plans rather than having to let us know that they have already made plans for those days, unaware of the plans to meet.

I was actually considering coming this year, but I've got my placement likely in July, and after having yet another excruciating experience with ear pain whilst flying last week, I've decided that I won't be flying anywhere for at least a year. So, have fun guys, though I know it'll be difficult without me. :smalltongue: :smallfrown:

That's pretty much a given- and with the switch to 5e, I won't be carrying as many sourcebooks with me- allowing me either to travel lighter or cram even more games into my luggage... (who am I kidding, it'll be the more games option)

If it's going to be July in London, I'll most likely be there as well, and I'm up for continuing the D&D game (which means that at some point I have to learn how 5e works and what the closest equivalent of a swordmage is...)

Ladies, Gentlemen, Rogues, Angels and other assorted lifeforms:

I have news:

Having volunteered to find a venue I have just now booked:

THE COLLEGE ARMS (http://www.faucetinn.com/college-arms/),
18 Store Street
London WC1E 7DH (https://www.google.com/maps/place/The+College+Arms/@51.5198975,-0.1318501,18z/data=!4m6!1m3!3m2!1s0x0:0xe41918e0e3b92d15!2sThe+C ollege+Arms!3m1!1s0x0:0xe41918e0e3b92d15)

(It's been recommended to me, so I'm ignoring the reviews for the place...)

It has been booked for 18th JULY from NOON. We'll have the room until midnight.

FOOD

There is a menu. If you want to pre-order food, send me (Capt. Spanner (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/private.php?do=newpm&u=49745)) a message before the 11th July, telling me what you'd like from their menu (http://www.faucetinn.com/college-arms/files/2011/04/College-arms-menu-Latest-01.12.2014.pdf).

TRAVEL:

EDIT: If you're travelling to London, and I've met you before at a meetup and you want accommodation, send me a PM. I can put a few people up at my house, but not many. PMs because if I have to play favourites (and I might...) I'd rather do so behind closed doors, so I won't answer the public thread on anything about that.

i wasn't aware you had access to the master post... well not directly, i suppose a heavy stick would get you it pretty quickly, but i digress.

yes it's open for new players last time i had 5 when i planned for 6 so there is always room. also i expect some of the others may disappear if their players aren't present or if they are... "otherwise engaged" we are currently at day 2 and i expect some to break away from the group to acquire certain items. (assuming people start posting in the pbp thread to work out what's happening)

Assuming nothing changes, I believe I can make this one without much in the way of trouble. Can't confirm anything of course, but chances look good. Shall input date into diary and explore possibilities.

Also, just in case it got missed a while back:

Archie, the character I have at present in the D&D game is (unless there have been some major release shifts) pretty much utterly impossible to convert and still keep the basis of her character intact. I need to talk to the friend who built her for me again, just to see if there have been some updates that make her workable, but if there haven't you're probably going to lose your Dragon Summoner. Which makes me sad.

Then again, my own fault for picking the most complex and reliant on 4e mechanics character my friend put together for me.

Maybe you could build a character based on Shamal as a fallback option (although I think outside of the cleric role, Signum and Vita would both be easy enough to build as long as you homebrewed their weapons- and quite fun to play as well)

Archie, unless there have been some major changes it's going to require writing an entirely new base class. Just for her. I'm not saying that that's impossible, but balancing her abilities will be an absolute bitch.

I have a promised build on standby for me if I want to play it that, depending on what I choose, can be an expy of just about any of the A's mains (Except Hayate, because that level of blasting is just obscene). The issue with Caro is that - at the time of my questions to my friend - there were pretty much no 5e 'pet' classes.

A free brownie to the person who can guess which class would be the base of this proposed build. Listing all of them at once is grounds for immediate disqualification.

Archonic Energy

correct. At the moment she is completely away from established classes. And maybe so for a while. But since our meetings are biannually by the time winter or next summer rolls around it'll be more feasible to re introduce her. Play the long game how unlikely is it that they will completely drop a class?

Hell straight up now. Cleric with a pseudo dragon familiar granted by her god that can channel touch attacks. Fluff it how you want it's mechanically possible if not perfect.

Play the long game. I certainly am.

Additional: I really could use a head of the local thieves guild... *hint*

If she was mad before becoming a moderator, though, that means the moderators knowingly employed a mad person. Does that mean the moderation team are entirely mad (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_System_of_Doctor_Tarr_and_Professor_Fether)?

Yeah, looking at Holiday/Premier Inns, it seems like if I want the more reasonably priced ones I'll probably end up looking at 45 minutes at least to get in to the venue. But that should be easily manageable if we're not getting in until noon. How feasible it will then be to go back at midnight is less certain... this may be tricky to figure out the best option.

I'm a little miffed, though, because there was a really good flight to London in the morning of the meetup, but it seems all the best flights this weekend were sucked into a black hole. That said, I got it really cheap nevertheless, but now I will have to land in London at Friday afternoon, so I need two hotel nights rather than one. Anyone got any tabs on any relatively affordable hotels?

FinnLassie
2015-06-14, 02:10 PM
Knowing it's the UK, Premier Inn is probably the most affordable choice. Though, if there's an easyhotel nearby/within reasonable commute (45-60min max, it's London baby) those are ok too. Pretty cramped, but it reminded me of a cabin in a ship... Manageable if you're only sleeping there for the night, easyhotel is nay hangout place.

By the sounds of it so far most people either live in London or close enough to day-trip ratehr than hotel. I think someone is sleeping on Spanner's sofa or something?
I've booked myself into the Premier Inn in Edmonton, which is apparently a bit less than an hour by public transport (as well as being cheaper than other options and coincidentally not too far from where I lived for the first 7 years of my life, so if I have a free moment over the weekend I might go try and find my memory lane to stroll along). Well, I think we needed more sacrificial victims for the rituals anywa- I MEAN, YES. IT IS FINE FOR REASONS WHICH HAVE NOTHIGN TO DO WITH ANY KIND OF PSYCHOPATHIC CULT. ALL YOUR FRIENDS WILL SURVIVE THE DAY UNSCATHED.
(It's OK, guys, I slipped up but think I got away with it!)

On the topic of bringing stuff, I can bring miniatures, but might decide not to.

I too live "in london" but not really. If you are in a London Borough then you do...

Depends. Also I was thinking of Tiamat. My mistake.
And do you know if those invisible stalker minis were released. And I need a giant throwing rust monsters.

Fair enough then

That is... worse. Yes, definitely worse.

Maybe you have messed with my mind, maybe I'm messing with you by pretending to act as if you're messing up my mind; maybe it's because I'm trying to adapt to a new time zone and only sleeping maybe sixteen hours since Tuesday.

We didn't all meet up for a pre-meetup meal on this occasion. Personally, once I realised I was hungry and should therefore go eat before continuing to internet, I only dithered a little bit before remembering that I was about 20 minutes walk from an Indian restaurant I used to go to all the time when I was a small child here.

Also I'm not a horrible person, I am not a wolf, and you shouldn't lynch me or distrust what I say, I am always truthful.

You know, I always wondered what the verbal component of Tasha's Hideous Laughter was - I'm pretty sure this is it...

So, are we meeting up at all tomorrow? I have to be out of the Premier Inn by noon, and then my coach doesn't leave Victoria until 4:30, so I'll have some time to kill if people are about.

OK, day's results:

Our castle of evil had, surprisingly, only been 50% Cassie'd once the deck of monsters had been exhausted.
Heliomance turned out to be a millennia-old immortal, trapped me and Cassie in an ancient house of mystery, and devoured our life essences. That was a surprise.
An eleventh-hour doppelganger attack destroyed Mercenary_Pen, but was mostly thwarted by Hamish and me before suddenly coming to a close as Helio left and took the game with her.

So I come to make one last check on the forums only to see Cassie posted something at a quarter to four in the morning, I immediately decide to tell her off because she has school or work or something like that on the morrow.
Then I realise I changed forum setting to reflect my new time zone and it's actually around nine o'clock where she lives.

You can stay up for a few more hours Cassie, but be in bed by one! Don't make me tell your parents. :smalltongue:

Yes, but if you were paying attention, we'll need to find another dragon, and keep it alive (or possibly wait for it to hatch), and food is a useful starting point to pacifying anything that lives (with the possible exception of Aberrations, Abominations and stuff that is just plain weird- also not so good for constructs and the undead, but they're not living).

sorry that I have put this off for so long:

WALL OF TEXT ALERT!

Bobtown Session 3:

after hiring some new muscle as some of their previous party had to go and sort some other issues out the new Mayor & new Magic users Guild-master went to the nearest source of marble to buy some and hopefully not get mugged on the way home.
Upon arrival to the quarry they found that it was deserted after some investigation they head into the town to see if they can find someone who knows something. They headed off to the pub because people in bars are known for their helpfulness and rumour spreading (as an aside I've never really understood this theory because people in pubs want to drink. they rarely want to talk outside their group of friends unless they are on the pull) so they walked in and asked the barkeep what's up.
The barkeep seems confused, people usually at least order drinks before pumping him for information. it's a bit rude to go to a bar and not buy anything! especially when the town is going through financial hardship. after the cleric took the hint (thanks Helio) and ordered something the barkeeper suggested that the manor house is probably the best place to start as the mine owner lives there after finishing their drinks they headed off there to speak with him about getting some marble.
Upon arrival to this large marble mansion they knock on the door, the butler answers and seems put out that someone has arrived without proper invitation, however once he hears that they wish to discuss business with the owner he invites them in and gets him.
The Quarry owner arrives and when is asked about buying some marble immediately tries to sell the quarry and the mansion for 1500GP after some back and forth the party decides to buy the quarry but not the mansion for the sum of 1000GP to be taken from Bobtown's Coffers.
after the bank has transferred the deeds and been adequately assured of the credentials of the Mayor to accept the transfer (how did banks cope before long range instantaneous information transfer was possible?)

TBC: have to go out.
