So how good would you guys say that the feat that grants 3 skills/tool proficiencies is? And would it break anything if you added this to the feat: instead of 3 skills or tool proficiencies you can instead choose one skill or tool that you gain expertise in.

Sounds good to me, you gain less "plus" to skills compared to just taking 3 but instead have the option to specialize. :)

Isn't the first part just the Skilled feat from PHB?

Skilled
You gain proficiency in any combination of three skills
or tools of your choice.

As for the second part having a feat that gives expertise for one skill might step on the rogues toes a bit, but perhaps as an alternative have the feat give x1.5 proficiency bonus to one skill of your choice. That way its not as good as the class ability, but still good.

so maxed out proficiency bonus would look like
+0 untrained
+3 jack of all trades (bard untrained)
+6 trained skills
+9 trained skills specialized in with the new feat
+12 trained skills with the rogues expertise ability

and of course add in the clause that you can't stack the feat with the rogues expertise

so maybe the final write up would look something like

Skill Focus
Choose one skill or tool that you are proficient with. Your proficiency bonus for skill checks made with that skill or tool is increased by half, rounded down. This ability can not be applied to a skill or tool with which you already have Expertise. If you would gain Expertise in a skill or tool to which Skill Focus applies you may choose another skill or tool with which you are proficient and apply the benefits of this feat to it instead.

Yeah its a change to the original feat, either get 3 skills/tools and add new option of expertise in 1 skill/tool.

Will keep it as full expertise cause bard/rogue gets 4 expertise so its not even close to their amount of specialisation. Would give a player who wants to be exceptional in 1 skill the possibility to do so without multiclass. And also fits well cause it removes the sillyness that a rogue is better at grappling then a 20 str barbarian or fighter or better at beeing a face even without high CHA. :)

And on the part of stepping on rogue toes, its not going against the design of the edition so far since a feat can give your char the only thing special about the battlemaster for example. :)

While it is true that the Martial Adept feat gives access to the Battlemasters maneuvers and superiority dice it gives a d6, whereas the Battlemaster begins with a d8 and improves from there. So from the way I see it the feat gives a less powerful version than the class feature. You could say that a single Expertise skill is less powerful than getting it for four skills, and that is true, but to me that is more a thing of quantity. To me I'm seeing d6 vs d8/d10/d12, +9 vs +12. rather than concentrating on 2 maneuvers vs 3 maneuvers, 1 skill vs 4 skills.
