Hello all thank you for adventuring inside. I am here to ask you just two questions. However they are totally unrelated and so let's get to the actual questions.

1. For part of a paper I'm writing, the professor wants me to poll a group of people. I figured GITP was as good a place as any to find people to poll. The subject matter we are currently discussing is teen sexting. For the purpose of this poll, sexting is used to describe the sending of explicit images, videos, or writing, through any medium. (texting, Skype, email, etc.) Also please take into account this is purely talking about when people under the age of 18 do it. Thank you
"Do you feel that the teens who participate in sexting(sending or receiving) should be charged with possession of child pornography?" Follow up question, "Do you feel that sexting is not an issue?"

2. This question is totally unrelated, but on my college campus a lot of guys who have longer hair have suddenly starting pulling it back and wearing it in a pony tail fashion. Is this like some new fashion thing? I don't think I've ever seen males on my campus wear their hair like that and no almost every guy with longer hair is.

The first one is a bit more important to answer, the second one is just something I'm curious about. Thanks in advance to any who answer.

1.
If the teens keep their sexulity between themselves, it's their own business. It's when these things start getting shared around that you have problems.

2. Yeah the longer haired guys doing ponytails is a bit of a trend. Some people blame the "Vikings" tv show.

1. I'm of the mind that yeah, they should be charged. Maybe not quite as harshly as an adult, and certainly NOT put on the Sex Offenders Registry, but definitely a fairly severe punishment, and if they repeat the actions, then yeah, hit them with what an adult would get. The issue with teens is that they are extremely hormonal, thus making their emotions a bit of a roller-coaster. The moment a relationship goes sour, any naked pics they have of their respective other will be doled out en-masse in order to humiliate their ex. This can have devastating effects on the psyche of the person whose body is being revealed against their will, possibly leading to suicide, or even worse, push them over the edge and possibly spark a mass-shooting in order to garner revenge. Better to head them off immediately, then to give them leeway and suffer terrible consequences.

2. I wouldn't know, I live in a small community and most common haircut around here is buzzcut for men, and long hair for the women.

1. No. I belive it is up to the parent to educate their children on how to appropritately handle sexting. I grew up with online chat rooms and "sexted" as a minor. No, I didn't share images but did share text. it's more dangerous now with how permanent and accessable the internet has become, but I think it's on the parent, not the government to handle this.

If anything, I wouldn't mind more stringent laws a la the "ex" laws that are going around california.

Should teens be made felons for being foolish and sending their SO a picture of their boobs? No. Should teens suffer the consequences if they distribute or sell materials they've received from others? Yes. Exactly what sort of consequences, I'm not sure, though I doubt that the punishments that are calibrated for adult wrongdoers involved in the creation and distribution of cp are quite the right ones for teens.

Sexting is definitely an issue, it seems self-evidently so, though how best to address it and reduce it throughout the population while also establishing a general sexting etiquette and sense of decorum to counter revenge porn and the abominable habit of teens recording rapes and then distributing the evidence of such in order to humiliate the victim and drive them to suicide is something that I don't rightly know.

Men who have had longer hair have worn it in pony tails since the 80s and 90s in modern times. Possibly it goes all the way back to some hippies or whatever in the 70s. Of course, men have worn their hair in pony tails or pony-tail-like fashions since well before the Information Age.

It may be a passing fad if suddenly a large portion of those who were wearing their hair down are now wearing it up, though. It may be a seasonal factor as well.

1. What happens between two consenting people is none of my business nor the state's. If they're under the age of consent (which in the US is usually 16), that's more of a grey area... but if the pictures are consensual, sent by the person they picture, and are seen only by the person they're intended for, it should IMO be in the clear regardless of what the law states. Kids will be kids and while they may not understand the full repercussions of their actions it's pretty silly to punish them for something that doesn't really hurt anyone except themselves.

2. I think this is anecdotal. I was the exception in high school as a guy with long hair who didn't put it up, though I started doing so last year because my boyfriend thinks it's cute.

The Winged Mod: Sorry, guys, the topic of whether someone should be charged for something is very clearly political and should not be discussed here, especially if we're talking about explicitly sexual content.

If you want to you can start another thread to discuss the second question, as that one is board-appropriate.
