"CRISIS AT CRUSADER CITADEL!"

0900 hours, Friday morning (http://atlanticsentinel.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Chicago-Illinois1.jpg)

Under a haze of smoky skies, mist-like rain swirled down across the face of Center City. Even with the inclement precipitation, the temperature was already over seventy degrees. It was going to be a warm day as Spring wrestled the environment away from Old Man Winter. With the sun shrouded by clouds, the dullness of drizzly gray dominated the usually colorful cityscape. Birds fought for position underneath any available shelter and the rhythmic patter of raindrops could be heard everywhere. Dampness, coupled with the invigorating fragrances of Springtime, permeated the senses reminding Center City residents that civilization can never completely escape Nature's grasp.

Defying the weather, thousands of locals hurried about the city streets, by various means of transport, to include semi-splashing footsteps on water-logged sidewalks. People lacking the proper rain-gear shielded their heads with any manner of cover, from newspapers to coats pulled up over their shoulders. The symphony of traffic, tires squealing, horns honking and engines revving echoed wherever the roadways allowed travel. The gruff, cybernetic smells of the city was especially strong downtown, as usual, with near-choking vehicle exhaust and garbage odor harassing pedestrians. Crowds of workers and students and tourists flocked about the busy streets like massive, interlocked animal herds searching for substenance.

With Center City wide-awake and going about her business, there was still a secret sensation creeping through the populace. Fear. A recent spike in local crime had residents on edge, despite the methodical promises of the Mayor and law enforcement officials to crack-down on the wrongdoers. Where once people were blithe and hospitable, now they looked over their shoulders far too often, wary of becoming victims of some unthinkable violation. No one wanted to openly admit it, but villainy was winning a sociological war of attrition. Worse still, Center City's indigenous cure for lawlessness was conspicuously absent: a week into a major crime-wave and the Crusaders were no where to be found! Having defended the fair city from threats both great and small for many years, locals had come to expect their heroes appearing when needed most to preserve justice. Now, nothing, save the growing shadow of criminality running rampant.

Who, if not Center City's greatest defenders, would rise from their everyday beginnings and challenge the darkness?

Introduce your heroes: who they are, where they are, and what they're doing.

Dropping Jenny off at school, Ron Quantum Wyatt stands outside the date and waves goodbye as she walks through the entrance. This is a sight the kids and parents of Robert F. Stewart Middle School have grown accustomed to his presence.

With that done he heads into the city centre. There's so many stores and activities and things to experience that in the short time he's been constructed he still hasn't seen half of what Central city has to offer.

Although he could fly if he wanted to, Ron prefers to take things slow and easy. Besides, when he's flying he can't afford any distractions in case he flies into a building at several hundred miles an hour. With a gentle walk he can get some entertainment time in.

Mentally loading up the nest episode of Game of Thrones, he picks up where he left off towards the end of Season 1. It's been recommended to him by a few people and it's really hard to avoid spoilers, so he's trying to plough through all the episodes before anyone can spoil it for him.

"Urgh Joffrey, you're the worst" he says to himself as he crosses the road, heading towards a French market in a local park that he wants to browse.

Jackson stood in line at a small mom-and-pop coffee house near the local public library where he worked. He was dressed casually, in a nice button down green shirt and dockers with brown loafers. His brown hair was nearly trimmed and combed and his green eyes appeared bright and inquisitive. The place was less crowded than the chain store across the street but it's service was less efficient and the coffee wasn't nearly as consistent.

Jackson however found the place more enjoyable because here people talked to each other, it was as much a social gathering spot as it was about getting sustenance. Jackson found himself listening to the conversations nearby as he waited for his turn. He enjoyed the people and the small glimpses he caught of their lives without invading their privacy more than they expected anyway given that they were in public.

He ordered his usual beverage and a pastry to go and found a seat by the window to wait for his order where he could watch the people passing on the street outside.

ohcrapimlate!

Some days, you wake up on the wrong side of the bed. Some days, you hit the snooze button five times too many in a sleep-filled stupor, wrapped in a pile of blankets a princess would envy.

Some days, you have a 9 o'clock yoga class that you're instructing, and the Mayor's wife is going to be attending.

Unfortunately, that was today.

Sam is already dressed for the class as she sprints across town: a tight tee and yoga pants, slip-on shoes. One of the benefits of not having a secret identity is that she doesn't need a car; she leaps from the rooftop of a hi-rise, trusting in her powers to carry her above the streets, and sprints sideways across the glass windows of a skyscraper before she springs across the city again, a frantic dash across town.

Fred Broll

The Griddle Cafe in Central City. It was a cozy, crowded place in downtown Central. Waiters and waitresses wearing black came to and fro taking orders, refilling coffee, and bringing food to tables. People were having a good time, unwinding even under the tension of the city's current woes. It's hard not to be happy when one is eating a stack of pancakes the size of an adult torso. There was a constant din of people talking and laughing, silverware clinking on plates and the rhythmic ringing of the bell to signify a ready order.

In a corner booth were sat two people. One was a pretty girl in her early-to-mid twenties with long red hair, big blue eyes, and a dusting of freckles across the bridge of her nose. She wore stylish clothing and was eating some french toast. Across from her sat a man approximately her same age. At 5'11, he had an obviously athletic figure. He had short, wild midnight hair and eyes that were covered by a pair of strange-looking shades. Instead of arms, they had leather loops that were worn around his ears. Fairly odd for someone sitting inside on a rainy day. He wore a black waterproof jacket over a simple gray shirt and a pair of jeans. Sitting in the booth beside him was a long black duffle-bag. This guy was eating said human-sized stack of pancakes.

"It's been two months since I've heard anything from you."

He had a mouthful of food that he quickly chewed and swallowed. "Sorry, I've been busy. I was in Chicago until last week."

The girl fired another question, "In Chicago for what?"

"A job."

"What kind of job?"

"It wasn't interesting, Claire."

"Just tell me. Please."

He blinked behind those shades. "Security."

The girl, Claire, laughed in a frustrated way. "Fred, you were studying childhood education and history. How did you get a security gig?"

In an abrupt flashback, we are taken to the streets of Chicago where a man dressed in a classic suit is cut down with the flash of a blade. The man cries out and turns to ash. From across the alleyway, a vampire Al Capone shouts a curse.

Fred grinned slightly, "I'm multi-talented. Seriously, work stays at work. How have things been for you?"

She exhaled a breath. He was changing the subject, like he always did. It was pulling teeth to get him to talk about himself. "It's been good. I just made lead programmer on my team. It's a big shift in responsibility, but I'm ready for it."

Fred smiled at her as she spoke. She was a very smart lady; smarter than he ever was or could ever hope to be. Hearing about her success made him happy. "If anyone can do it, you can. I look forward to the IPO."

They laughed and continued to talk. The relationship -- whatever it was, honestly - was comfortable and warm. And barring any unforeseen events, they would continue talking.

*Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing*

A suddenly-awakened Curtis opens an eye to glance at the alarm clock: 8:15 am.

Who the hell is at this hour?

*Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing*

"...livery for Mr. Arlington!" a muffled voice coming from the entrance door says.

A livery? What...
...
...oh, a delivery.

Seems like his brain is starting to click in. "COMING!" Curtis yells while getting up from the bed and in a few seconds he's in front of his apartment's open door, blankly staring at the courier.

"So?"

"Sign here, please." the man says, giving him a form without as much as a glance. Curtis complies, and gives it back.

"Thanks, here's your delivery. Have a nice day."

Yeah, this was going to be a nice day. Before you woke me up. Curtis thinks as he accepts the package and watches the man walk away. Then, closing the door behind him, he heads for the bedroom again while opening the box and revealing a white mask with small slits for the eyes and a black crescent moon shaped mouth drawn on it, much like the happy one of the two classical comedy masks. You can find anything on the Internet, nowadays.

And with this the costume is ready. Curtis glances at the clock again, yawns, then sighs. I'm awake already, might as well go make some money.

Still, there's no reason to be in a hurry and so he takes it easy: by the time he's down in the street, it's almost 9 o'clock. Since the costume for his alter-ego is finally complete, and neatly folded in a gym bag he's taking along, he can now intervene should he stumble into, say, a bank robbery: with his speed, changing clothes is a matter of seconds if he goes all out. With these thoughts in mind, an umbrella in one hand, and said bag in the other, the casually-but-still-somewhat-elegantly dressed Curtis heads to a gaming house - six and something blocks far - trying to avoid steping into ankle-deep puddles.

Quantum:
While crossing the rainy street, Ron hears something (http://listenonrepeat.com/watch/?v=nRwM7UEQ8Q0#EXPLOSIONS_-_big_explosion_sounds__SOUND_EFFECT) in the distance. Then again, a similar sound, followed in a few seconds by others. They seem to be coming from the downtown area, but before he can react, a police car streaks just a yard past him, nearly striking his armored form and splashing water all over him! Ron realizes he's still in the street, then another police vehicle speeds past following the other, sirens wailing, (http://listenonrepeat.com/watch/?v=1G9mNBUymP8#Police_siren_sound_effect_1) headed towards what could be downtown!

People on the street stop, in the downpour, to look at the passing cruisers and watch Ron as well. Center City residents are definitely concerned, maybe anxious, about the emergency.

Maelstrom:
Just as the he's biting into his scrumptious pastry, Jackson hears sirens. (http://listenonrepeat.com/watch/?v=1G9mNBUymP8#Police_siren_sound_effect_1) Not just one, but multiples, suddenly echoing across the area. People inside and outside the coffee shop look around, trying to see anything unusual, some putting down umbrellas to get a better view. They're clearly tense, almost rattled by the sirens! A few seats away from Jackson, small child plays with his parents' cell phone,

"Mommy, mommy! Look! I can play this! Mommy! I ---"

The mother reaches for the mobile, practically snatching it from the kid and stares at the screen, fingering the image, then looks at her male companion,

"Something's happening downtown. Looks like --- Bank of the East. WCTV's reporting there's a hold-up at Bank of the East! That's just a few blocks away! Honey, maybe we should ---"

The man places a comforting hand on the woman's shoulder and leans over to catch a glimpse of the small screen,

"Bank robbers? Who robs banks these days? Maniacs. Well, the Crusaders should be on the ---"

An older, bearded man sitting at the counter turns to address the man, cutting him off,

They should, yeah! But, where are they? Aint nobody seen 'em for weeks! I caught some thugs trying to break into my place yesterday! Good thing I keep a piece on me, or I wouldn't be here talking to you now. We're alone. The Crusaders have abandoned Center City, I tell ya!"

As customers break into a debate over the local crime spike and where the Crusaders are, someone gasps as a CCPD squad car streaks past the cafe' moving at well over 60 mph and cutting around other vehicles! The little child clings to his mother's leg,

"Mommy? Why the policeman's sirens do that? Are we alone?"

Jailbreak:
As she bounds across Center City, raindrops pelting her lightly, Samantha notices the sound of sirens! (http://listenonrepeat.com/watch/?v=1G9mNBUymP8#Police_siren_sound_effect_1) Looking around, she sees a small convoy of police vehicles speeding through traffic on the streets below! Before she can react, a Center City police helicopter flashes (http://listenonrepeat.com/watch/?v=sOKeIDWL6x8#Helicopter_Sound_Effect) overhead, only about fifty feet above the airborne heroine! The aircraft cuts across rooftops high above the racing police cruisers as CCPD seems to be responding to an emergency to the east side of town! While rain showers the landscape, crowds on the sidewalks stop to stare at the troubling police response!

Ronin:
Fred's having an excellent morning meal with Claire when a waitress bust-in from the kitchen area holding a cellphone,

"Turn on the TV! There's a robbery!"

People immediately stare and get up and look at the girl, then the TV, which is switched on by Zoe, the Griddle Cafe's on-duty manager! Images of a western TV show appear, and Zoe changes channels until reaching the WCTV station, which displays in bold letters, "Crime in Center City! Bankk Robbery in progress!" across the screen! Images of police cars parked and arriving outside the Bank of the East fill the picture, with the camera zooming in to catch two masked, black-garbed gunmen firing what looks like assault rifles (http://listenonrepeat.com/watch/?v=l9XaXRKTv2U#AR-15_Automatic_Rifle__Sound_Effect) at cops, who use their vehicles for cover! The camera shudders violently and the cameraman obviously takes cover, but the "Crime in Center City!" banner remains painted on the screen! The voice of popular local newswoman, Jessica Anderson, begins, half-panicked,

"They just came out of the bank as we arrived! We --- GOD! Wha --- Dave, can you still hear --- oh my god! Get down, Peter! Dave, if you can hear me, Center City police have arrived but are taking heavy fire from the robbers! It sounds like --- that's gotta be a machinegun or something --- it's --- OH!!! I --!"

The camera creeps back up and catches policemen returning fire (http://listenonrepeat.com/watch/?v=Mh0XEO3uYII#Guns-_Beretta_Elite_Sound_Effect) at the gunmen, but one of the cops is spun around by a shot and falls helplessly to the ground!

Now, Fred hears the sounds of sirens (http://listenonrepeat.com/watch/?v=1G9mNBUymP8#Police_siren_sound_effect_1) and a police cruiser rockets past the Griddle Cafe headed to the bank just blocks away! People outside rush inside the restaurant and the stunned crowds are loud and panicked, wondering what to do! Then, from down the street, people begin dashing past the cafe running down the sidewalks on either side of the street, away from the bank's location! Their anguished cries for help (http://listenonrepeat.com/watch/?v=zZuH4_Zn6YM#Crowd_panic_sound_effect) rain over the streets and into the Griddle Cafe!

Inside, a woman faints and is caught by her companion! The waitress that announced the emergency shrieks,

"WHERE ARE THE CRUSADERS!?!?"

Ace of Spades:
Ignoring the early rain, Curtis is just catching his stride when a police vehicle (http://listenonrepeat.com/watch/?v=1G9mNBUymP8#Police_siren_sound_effect_1) shoots past him at nearly 70 mph! Turning, he sees a S.W.A.T. van speed past trailing the cruiser at high-speed! In the distance, Curtis can make out a black helicopter, maybe CCPD, circling the downtown area and some people on the street have stopped to stare at their cellphones! Something is happening. While putting it all together, Curtis thinks he hears a loud sound (http://listenonrepeat.com/watch/?v=nRwM7UEQ8Q0#EXPLOSIONS_-_big_explosion_sounds__SOUND_EFFECT), repeated every few seconds.

No warm-up: It's party-time. Wasn't sure how far some of you were from downtown proper, so sights & sounds vary. At a distance, automatic gunfire resembles explosions, hence the 'booms'. All of you should be within a minute of the action. Decide what you want to do & ROLL INITIATIVE! You arrive based on those rolls. Questions? Ask.

"Ned, no!" says Ron, shocked, as he finally comes across the twist that people had hinted was coming.

Engrossed in his program, it takes a second for the explosions to register. Head suddenly jerking upright, he listens carefully and manages to get a good bead on where the sound is coming from - quickly followed by the sound of sirens heading there.

He hadn't tackled anything big before, nothing more than muggers and the like, but that was about to change.

Pointing his arms straight down, Quantum holds his palms out the side. Channelling energy, two short streams of blue energy burst from his hands, propelling him softly into the air as people around him look on startled. A few moments later the thrusters in his feet come on too, much longer and stronger plumes of energy than from his hand, and Quantum is sent soaring into the sky.

Keeping his speed to a little under Mach 1, having learnt the hard way that you shouldn't cause sonic booms in the middle of a city, Quantum soars over the city as he simultaneously tries to spot the location of the disturbance from his vantage point and listen in on the police band of the radio to try and get an idea of what's happened.

Fred Broll

The mood was broken quickly. The entire café went silent as the tv showed what was happening. A Bank Robbery. Fred, at first, averted his gaze once more. No monsters, public place… this wasn’t a job for him. Central City had capes, they could handle this on their own. He glanced up to Claire, who had stood up and was watching the screen. She felt the same dread that everyone else felt. Again, no monsters, public place.

He heard the firearms blaze, each bullet that left the barrels a possible death sentence to a cop or bystander. It’s still too public.

He glanced up at the screen now, watching the carnage from behind his dark shades. He sees the cop take the bullet and fall. Public.

Finally, he feels the weight of hopelessness beginning to bear down upon his fae spirit. Where are the capes? Why aren’t they doing anything? Why were these ***holes being allowed to shoot up downtown? Someone had to do something.

Fred slammed his fist down against his table, rattling the silverware. Claire looked at him wide-eyed just as he stood to his feet and collected his duffle bag. “Where are you going?” She asked him.

“To work security,” he said as he walked into the men’s room. The door swung open and he stepped through.

“To work security? FRED! What are you doing?!” Claire opened the door he’d just walked through. Fred was nowhere to be seen, only his duffle-bag remained… unzipped and lying on the floor. “Fred?”

Appearing from a particularly shiny window on the Bank or near it, Frederick Broll stood perpendicular to the ground, standing on the window as if it were terra firma. On his hip, tucked into his belt was a Japanese katana held within a purple-lacquered sheath. The rain fell sideways on the young man, who looked down upon the chaos from behind his shades. He took a moment to examine his surroundings.

He uses Through the Looking glass to teleport there. Like a bad-*ss.

SWAT? A heli? Explosions? I...suppose I have to thank that delivery man for showing up so early. Curtis thinks as he slips into a side alley; after making certain that no one is watching him, with a series of movements probably too fast for a normal human to visually keep track of, he changes into the purple tuxedo and top hat which make up his costume, wears the mask to cover his entire face and a pair of white gloves, and hides the bag with his other clothes between the wall and a bulky AC unit.

Alright, here I go. He stretches his neck and shoulders a couple of times, excited at being able to make his debut so soon, then darts off at full speed towards the source of the explosions dodging the somewhat startled pedestrians on the sidewalk. You chose a bad day for robbing, guys.

Bank of the East (on the OP City Map, it's in the Financial District, at the corner of Battery & Drumm)
LEGEND:
"T" = Three black-garbed thugs with body armor & assault rifles firing at CCPD & trying to use building & bushes outside the bank for cover (Building = Partial Cover & bushes = Partial Concealment)
CC = Center City Police Cruisers (at least one officer nearby)
H = CCPD Helicopter (200' up)
SV = (F5; S.W.A.T. van w/ 6-man sniper unit)
PC = (E5; CCPD Command post; Detective Broyko & senior officers)
V = abandoned vehicles (you can create civilians to rescue randomly)
TV = WCTV News Van (Jessica Anderson & cameraman are there)
H = WCTV News Helicopter (200' up)

Using the grid, Players should let me know where their hero is OOC. Heroes looking to meet with CCPD officials need to make a Persuasion check (DC10). Heroes looking to ambush the gunmen need to make a DC7 Stealth check (they're focused on CCPD). At least one of them lets off a burst aimed at the police blockades each round. These gunmen are Minions, so you can use Routine attacks against them, instead of rolling. Any questions, just ask.

Everyone:
The heroes arrive downtown amidst the loud echo of automatic gunfire (http://listenonrepeat.com/watch/?v=l9XaXRKTv2U#AR-15_Automatic_Rifle__Sound_Effect)! There are Center City police vehicles blocking most of the intersections as you close on the Bank of the East! Along the way, you see abandoned vehicles in the street, most of them still running with radios playing and some civilians remain huddled in and behind these vehicles. Large crowds have formed a few blocks from the chaos, as curiosity has gripped many pedestrians: perhaps they're waiting to see when the Crusaders arrive! Those heroes responding from the northern end of the city see a S.W.A.T. van parked next to a gaggle of police officers just north of the bank.

Any hero getting close to the bank sees three masked gunmen with assault rifles (http://english.al-akhbar.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/5cols/leading_images/clan.jpg) standing just outside the bank front doors, firing at police every few seconds!

Please decide on an action, make a check if necessary, decide on a grid position, and don't assume outcomes. Wait for my follow-up posts so this doesn't get any more confusing than normal:smallsmile:

No alias, yet.

Standing sideways on the window of the bank, Fred spotted his targets. Three gunmen out in the open, firing a hail of bullets into the street. At first glance they appeared to be your standard mortal humans, way below the caliber of creature Fred normally takes on. Fred’s right hand reached for the leather grip of his sword. In a blur of motion he drew the blade. The sword, Starsoul, was a blade so brilliant that it was almost a white color. And as any light hit it, even the light drowned out by the rain, the blade reflected a multitude of colors much like a prism.

“Time to go to work?” A disembodied voice spoke quietly.

“Yeah. They're killers. No mercy,” Frederick said quietly. His voice a deep baritone, with the resolve of one who was no stranger to battle.

“But boss… these are normies, and there are cops and tv cameras around.”

“Tch. You’re right. I’ll have to be more careful with my cuts.” Enough talk. Fred hopped “up” from the wall, disengaging his feet and letting the natural flow of gravity take over. The weight of his legs righted him in position with the ground as his left hand reached out to touch the wall of the Bank, using his magic to keep a grip on the wall and slow his descent. And as Isaac Newton did the work, Fred rapidly fell to the ground, landing quietly behind the three gunmen.

He quickly ran up to them and struck out, slashing at the first, aiming at his shoulder-blade. Fred was certainly going to injure the man if he hit, but it wouldn’t be anything he would die from. The blade, forged from the heart of a star, was capable of eating through Kevlar and flesh alike. If the foe dropped, Fred would waste no time in moving on to the next target, possibly delivering slash after slash.

When he was finished, he smirked at whatever enemies were remaining, then parted his lips, revealing a toothy grin. The swordsman then began to fade out of vision, the grin of his teeth all that remained until the lips closed. He effectively vanished. The robbers were being hunted.

A block away, a teenager who was a little too close to the action had his smartphone out, taking a recording of what just happened. “Oh man… this is so freakin’ cool.”

Routine attack!
20 to hit – DC 20 fort vs. weaken toughness; DC 25 damage

"Why is he dressed like that?"

"That mask is creepy."

"Mom, what's for lunch?"

Ignoring - for now - the whispers of the crowd, Ace approaches the blockade at the crossroad with swift movements and ends his run with a somersault worth of a professional, landing on the nearest cruiser with a hand on his hat to keep it from falling. After taking a moment to straighten his clothes with quick gestures while giving a look around to assess the situation, he adresses the cops.

"My, my, a robbery so early in the morning...very rude, isn't it? Tell me, how can I be of help today?" he says from behind the ever-smiling mask, in a slightly mocking and exaggerately theatrical tone.

Then he reaches out to psychically assess the situation scanning for minds in and around the bank. Particularlly looking to catch glimpses of their thoughts.

The orange-clad heroine keeps to the rooftops; almost nobody watches the skies and buildings, though those that do tend to be the best trained and prepared. Even still...assault rifles? In front of a bank? Could you get more cliched?

Either someone decided to stereotype themselves, or there were more would-be robbers in the building itself.

But first things first...put the guns away from the civilians, thank you very much.

Jailbreak perches casually on the bank exterior, so she looks directly at the tops of the criminals' heads. Her lips quirk in a dazzling smile.

"Hey! You guys!"

She calls out to the criminals, gives a cheery wave. Her voice is deliberately, annoyingly chirpy and light-hearted.

"Didn't your parents tell you not to take off the orange tips? People could mistake those things for real guns, and man, would you be in trouble!"

Blasting through the sky, Quantum soon catches sight of the indecent. Although the police would surely have three armed gunmen in hand soon enough, that still risked people getting killed. Not only that but just behind the gunmen Quantum can see a strangely garbed figure, dressed like a caricature of a criminal from a cartoon.

Such a blatantly criminal outfit bespoke supervillainy and superpowers, which is the kind of situation that calls for a hero to step in.

Swooping down, Quantum lands right in the midst of the assorted criminals with loud crack as the paving snaps under him.

"Trying to get away with this in my city? Not gonna work, you can bank on that" says Quantum, somehow working a cocky edge into his mechanical voice with his comment seeming directed at the potential super-criminal especially.

Raising two fists in the air, energy crackles around his hands and then explodes outwards in his immediate area.
