Overrated.

Whoops, did I say that outloud? My bad.

Seriously, I like to listen to them, and they're pretty good, but the hype over them is really too much.

there are so many lovely bands out there in metal, flower metal is so...snobby to me. Almost every one i know who listens to it says "Oh the other forms of metal are ok....they just dont have the message and feeling of flower metal" so my perception is just sligtly biased, also i run a metal show on the radio....and im not allowed to play anything softer then Thrash, so i dont get alot of exposure

There are better power metal bands than Dragonforce.

Blind Guardian, Demons & Wizards, Rhapsody (of Fire) and Sonata Arctica to name but four.

i wouldnt call Dragon Force Power metal, even though they are, more like flower or love metal, though i agree that Sonata is a great one.

like i said before i dont get to paly things lighter then thrash, and i really dont like my metal lighter then thrash to be honest, i love melodic death but thats about as far down the line i go. From what i have heard of them they have no power metal elements and all the elements of love metal that i oh so loath.

They're okay. Decent to listen to every now and then, fun to see live. Nothing special though, and there's dozens upon dozens of power metal bands I would much rather listen to.

And yes, Sonata Arctica is lovely stuff. One of the first five or so bands I got into, so there's a bit of a special connection to me.

Finns! Well now I have to listen to them...

*listening*

Oh God, oh God it's wonderful...

Wait, wait now the lead is singing. Blech. It's okay, but his voice irks me.

*is torn*

While I'm not really into hardcore vocals (at all), I'm into The Showdown (http://www.myspace.com/theshowdownmetal) (unofficial myspace...new cd not so good; More (http://www.myspace.com/theshowdown54321)). If anyone knows any good metal that doesn't have all hardcore growls or whiney annoying voices like (IMO) most of the bands mentioned in here, lay it on me.

Hmm, the music of The Showdown doesn't seem too bad, but the hardcore shouts are pretty damn terrible and those metalcore-type clean vocals are so incredebly cringeworthy :smalleek:

Anyhoo, seek and yee shall find:

Black Atom: Scottish metal band, the singer's a friend of mine. He's not very good to be honest, but decent and definitely neither whiny or hardcore-ish.
http://myspace.com/blackatom

Pharaoh: An American power metal band with a slight progressive edge. Amazing vocalist. http://www.solarflight.net/music.php

Hibria: The very embodiment of the tern "power metal". http://www.myspace.com/hibria

Astral Doors: Okay, so their originality is like -10 as they are pretty much 100% what Dio would sound like if he made modern power metal. That said, it still rocks a lot. http://www.myspace.com/astraldoors

Cans: solo band of Hammerfall's frontman. His best vocal job so far as he pushes the lower end of his range to excellent results. Pretty heavy, too. Clickedy-click (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=68446480)

Virgin Steele: OMG BEST BAND EVER! Well I think so anyways. I can't really think of any description that would do them justice, so just let the music speak for itself: http://www.myspace.com/virginsteele

Custard: German power metal goodness. The vocals are a bit gruffer and shriekier, but overall still pretty melodic. http://www.custard.de/albums.php

Circle II Circle: Err, Prog? I guess. Nice music, pretty melodic and atmospheric. A very full, pleaseant-sounding lower-pitched voice on vocals. http://www.myspace.com/circleiicircle

Gamma Ray: Please tell me you already know these guys. Please. Anyways, Rebellion in Dreamland is the best thing my lovely home country of Germany has ever produced, easily trumping even Weißbier. Vey oh vey, what a long link (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=39214990)

Goat Horn: Something a little heavier. The vocals are gruff, but definitely not core-ish. http://www.myspace.com/goathorn

Heathen: More heavier, old school thrash type stuff. True Communists that they are, they are offering both of their album for free download on their own website, http://heathenmetal.com/ (http://heathenmetal.com/index2.html). Really, every band should do that.

Iron Savior: More German metal goodness here. http://www.myspace.com/iron_savior_usa

Jag Panzer: And some American metal goodness here, too.
http://www.jagpanzer.com/html/downloads/audio.htm
I'd especially recommend the tracks "Three Voices of Fate", "King at a Price", "Licensed to Kill" and "Take to the Sky"

The Lord Weird Slough Feg: Weird band name? Well, it's a weird band. Imagine Iron Maiden mixed with early Black Sabbath and some celtic folk thrown in for good measure. Loevely. http://www.myspace.com/sloughfeg

Masterplan: German power metal band, more on the melodic end of the spectrum. Superb vocals too, quite hard rock-ish. http://www.myspace.com/masterplanmetal

Pagan's Mind: More goody-goody power metal, pretty progressive stuff. http://myspace.com/pagansmind

Rage: German metal juggernaut. Released some 18 or so albums in the last 23 years and and changed styles quite a bit. The only constants are that it's all metal, and all good. I personally like their two orchestral albums "Ghosts" and "XIII" best.
http://www.rage-on.de/ => media
http://www.myspace.com/rageofficial

Riot: American band. Changed style and singers quite frequently, ranging from hard rock to speed and power metal. http://www.riotsweb.com/

Realm: Up for something crazy? Over-the-top, shrieky, pretty technical and unorthodox thrash? Look no further! http://www.myspace.com/realmendlesswar

Okay, so that sound like just about enough for now. Enjoy!

Finntroll.

Do it, now.

Folk Metal.

Katatonia is always nice if you like slow music. The vocalist is kind of melancholic, but it doesn't matter.

If you prefer harsher vocals, but not quite screaming Ensiferum and Wintersun are both very good. They are both melodic death metal, but the vocalist is understandable, but still guttural.

Finntroll.

Do it, now.

Folk Metal.
I have one song by them... It's interesting to say the least.

Also, I like Dragonforce, but then again I'm very picky, yet not picky at all about what I like. As long as it 'sounds' good to me, then I like it.

Of course not much 'sounds' good to me.

I might be slightly biased towards them though, because I love pretty much anything involving Dragons. Ever since I was little.

There are better power metal bands than Dragonforce.

Blind Guardian, Demons & Wizards, Rhapsody (of Fire) and Sonata Arctica to name but four.

In adition to those i will recomend the following:
For those who like it fast and technical, there's also Angra, Elvenking and Angra.
For those who like their powermetal with a lot of atmosphere, there's Iced Earth, Dreamtone and Excelsis.

Black Atom: Scottish metal band, the singer's a friend of mine. He's not very good to be honest, but decent and definitely neither whiny or hardcore-ish.
http://myspace.com/blackatom
Well, the vocals could really be better, and a lot of the music was very NWBHM. What realy helps this band out is the clean, accoustic parts. they are really great. Just bought their album.

Big Blind Guardian Fan here. The first three albums and Nightfall in Middle-Earth I like best. I have all of them except A Twist in The Myst. I doubt that I will buy that one. The only song from A Night At the Opera that didn't get on my nerves is the magnificient And Then There Was Silence.

The first album from Demon & Wizards was good, but I was seriously disaapointed with the second.

Rhapsody (of Fire) ? Good Power Metal but so kitsch. I like their earlier stuff though (up to and including Power of the Dragonflame). But after that ... kitsch OD ... shudder.

Kataklysm is wonderful, as is Gardinean if you just listen to Sindustries....theh other two arnt that great and should be purged. Ill second Fintntroll, nothing like speed ploka to get the juicnes flowing. Bolt Thrower and The Haunted is also amazing. none of them are power metal but they are just as good, or better if you like heavier.

As a point: Dragonforce are indubitably power metal. "Love Metal" is not a genre, it is a further point of Children of Bodom trying to cash in, ala the Heartagram.

Me, I personally prefer my metal slow, epic and crunching. Also, sometimes written while high.

Innis Cabal
2007-04-11, 03:51 PM
Him is the heartagram actually, and Bodom is the definition of subpar metal

psychoduck14

I hate the heartagram...and with all the metal sub genres its amazing anybody can remember them all.

there are very many, i have a whole book written on them for work, lising bands and the differences just so when some snot nosed caller phones in and says with that voice that sounds like they know what they are talking about but don't "Do you know what the difference is between metal A and metal B?" and when i flip to page 15 and say "ya i do" they get all huffy and hang up, good times

and i got another person that has me in a quote....i'm amazed really

Sewer_Bandito
2007-04-11, 03:58 PM
Well, I honestly can't stand metal at all but Dragonforce is, in my opinion, pretty decent. They're one of the few 'metal' (although I don't really consider them to be metal) bands that I like.

Essentially Dragonforce is a Power/Speed Metal Band. Their music sounds pretty good, but I'm more inclined to Trash (I miss Chris Poland in Megadeth).

no no, im honored really, and im abnormal in that i actually care about my job. The pay is low and ive moved 5 times, but this is the last i love it where i am, but music is so important to me. Everything about it makes me excited i just wish there were words for the emotions i feel...and im getting carried away

psychoduck14
2007-04-11, 04:28 PM
ya i suppose i know what you mean there...i dont have a job yet and im still in school but dj-ing is something i've thought about doing because i really like music, and i've never really cared about money.

I don't particularly like thrash- although I respect what the genre is and how difficult it is to play, it just annoys me a bit.

Melodic Death Metal is an awesome genre, Carcass's last 3 albums are the pinnacle of melodeath awesomeness.

Doom metal in all of it's forms is my favourite type of metal. Nice and slow, with incredibly heavy riffs and generally epic vocals. Reverend Bizarre, Electric Wizard, Black Sabbath, Sunn O))) and Saint Vitus are good examples of all the subgenres of doom.

Black Metal is annoying, more so than thrash metal. However, it does throw out some good stuff, like Agalloch, and it has a spin off genre that can be very nice, black ambient.

btw what station is your show on if i may ask?

Shadow of the Sun
2007-04-11, 05:14 PM
Once I get better (I only started playing recently, and I haven't practiced much due to school) I am planning on starting a doom metal band. A technical one- I don't care for playing fast but I want to write parts that are difficult to play.

Seeing as I fingerpick I would probably be a really good rhythm guitarist in a high speed band- rasgueados allow for incredibly high speed, very rhythmic strumming

psychoduck14
2007-04-11, 05:27 PM
its funny how people sometimes think that somebody is a great musician because they can play real fast...example, me and my cousin were talking about bands...music in general and he says dragonforce's drummer is super good cause he can play fast...now Neil Pert and Slim Jim Phantom are both really different but both very good.. and Ringo Star didnt play fast but for the most part he was good. So i guess the point here is...um...i dont really a point that just popped into my head...wow...

It's Twist in the MYTH for God's sake!
It's not like Night at the Opera at all. More like a mix of Imaginations from the other Side and Nightfall in Middleearth.
I really recomend that you try to listen on it, maybee downloading it or listening to it in your local store.

Yeah, yeah, Myth, mispelling.

I listened to it at my local store saw/listened to the "Another Stranger Me" vid at YouTube. Heck, I even bought the "Fly" single when it came out because I was so excited for a new BG album. That all didn't convince me. I rather get me Savage Circus' "Dreamland Manor".

Oh I see. You like that kind of music. Actually, I think that Thomen should have stayed in BG and that those songs could be recorded by the band. Still, I personally think Dreamland Manor is a much weaker album than Twist in the Myth. The songs Fly and Another Stranger Me aren't the best on that album. I suggest listenning to: Otherland, Straight Through The Mirror and The New Order.
I guess you'll like the new Sonata album at least.

Dragonforce...The harmonics are good, as are some of the solos. The songs on a whole though...Not really to my tastes...A bit too try hard...

There are sertain ways of writing harmonics. A monkey can do that with proper training. The solos are technical but without any composing. There aren't given any thought to melodies, dynamics or tempo in them. They are just plain show-of.
The reason for that is simple. The songwriters in Dragonforce don't put effort in writing interesting and variating melodies. They just excell technically.
