So, I had to split my players into two groups, as the party was too large. One party continued on with the Rise of the Runelords campaign, and I am happy with that.

But that meant I had to come up with something original for the other party to do, ad since they were pretty insistent on staying in and around Sandpoint. One solution I came up with was to have them face the Sandpoint devil, at average party level 4, to "scare" them into realizing this thing was a bad***. Two unfortunately timed crits later, including a few AoOs, and the Sandpoint Devil is dead, with my low level party basking in glorious XP.

I had an idea, that the Sandpoint Devil's outsider parent is now angry that the spirit of its child is now in the afterlife. My proposed fix is the party will begin planar adventures, with the first one starting as a dreamscape, similar to Dragon Age's Fade.

I would like suggestions as to what kind of outsider parent spawned the Sandpoint devil; a named one if you guys have any specific ideas, and whatever other suggestions you would like to pitch.

Hrm. I typically avoid named outsiders because the only ones I know of are strong; talk to afrokuma for a better list.
Now, my memory is fuzzy for forgive this not being the greatest advice, but I think something like a yugoloth might be good here (I may also just like yugoloths too much). They are generically evil, work for pay, and would happily spawn some weapon (like the sandpoint devil) and get annoyed when someone breaks it before it can reach maturity/can be properly tested. It would also let you advance the sandpoint devil and let it come back again, so you get a less unsatisfying end to it.

What kind of thing is it that got killed? Outsiders don't have souls that go to the afterlife. However they usually reform on their home planes when slain.

That only applies to evil fiends directly from the abyss, though. This sandpoint devil sounds like a half-fiend.

Protip #423 - Being smug with folks offering to help you is a quick way to ensure no one helps you.

So it's a half-fiend horse? Why not make it the offspring of a Nightmare and a normal horse?

Or the offspring of a Demon Prince and a normal horse. Because Zeus.

I'm of the opinion that when we live in an era where the world's information is at your fingertips, asking someone instead of looking it up is a waste of everyone's time. If your search yields conflicting or inadequate answers, then asking is right course of action.

And to be completely fair, the user in question didn't even provide help to any of the questions asked, merely stating something that is irrelevant to the creature in question.

The Sandpoint Devil is a Native Evil Outsider. (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/outsiders/devil-steed) And it's backstory includes that it was the unwanted spawn of a cursed a woman who didn't want anymore children. Basically, Paizo copied the legend of The Jersey Devil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jersey_Devil), and put the creature into their campaign.

The assistance I am asking for is identifying additional fiends to qualify as this creature's outsider parent.

We have web filters where I am. So asking IS the fastest method.

You absolutely want to go with Nightmare. It's an intelligent, evil horse (which is already sorta cool all by itself) and it has Astral Projection and Etherealness as at will supernatural abilities. It's a great chance for a recurring villain, given that whenever it attacks the players, it (and any monsters it brings along) will be astrally projecting, so they won't actually die when the players kill it. Perfect for any recurring villain you want to set up!

For an easy introduction to planar dreamscape adventures, have the Nightmare show up with a Dream Eater (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/outsiders/dream-eater-od) as its rider and a pack of of Yeth Hounds (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/outsiders/yeth-hound). Have the Yeth Hounds chase the PCs across the desert, leading up to small camp with a handsome man astride a noble steed standing guard. He struggles against the hounds alongside the PCs, but is quickly unhorsed and overwhelmed. Just as it seems that the stranger is about to die, dawn breaks and the Yeth Hounds scatter. He invites them into his tent to recover after their long chase across the desert, inviting them to tell him their tale so far. Then, the next night, as the PCs sleep, the Dream Eater lures them off into the dreamscape, so that he can try to steal their souls.

Personally i got a good chuckle about that, though giving a small snapshot of what it was (ie Half Fiend Horse) would have sped up responses.

On to something useful. I second the Nightmare, you killed its baby, now its pissed, and as a guy who once had one as a special mount i can tell you that that is a bad plan. Those things are vindictive a holes who will happily send horribly beasties after you (read Ethereal Marauders)

Edit: Also they talk about Dreamscapes in Heroes of Horror (its 3.5 but i feel it should help here)
