I thought of a character concept but I am not sure about how to make a character with it. The bassic idea is that he is a traveling herb specialist who looks for rare herbs and plants, and then sells them. Makes potions and all that. A traveling plant salesman. How would you make that kind of character? One who goes adventureing to find rare ingrediants?

actualy maybe just exapand the character to a generic magic item shop keeper. Not sure.

Wizard, with the Transmutation school. They are the closest to alchemists there are in the game.

Assassin Rogue. Messes with herbs and poisons. Uses a poison covered dagger in combat to deal massive first round damage.

druid, ranger, bard, rogue, and nature cleric could all fit quite well.

This is what backgrounds are for.

Just use the existing rules in PHB 125 to modify the Sage or Guild Artisan backgrounds to give you tool proficiency in herbalism kits (i.e. subtract one proficiency, add herbalism kits), name your custom background "Herb Dealer" or whatever, then take whatever class and feats you want.

Guild Artisan, you can pick Apothecary and Healer's Kit as your proficiency. If you go Sage, you won't get the kit... but from there, I'd probably pick Wizard or Warlock - delver into magical/arcane with different focuses.

I made something in a similar vein, but he was an alchemist Sage instead, and a Warlock - the idea was that the forbidden knowledge he got as a sage was from a tome he found (pact of the book) so you'd have to play a little different until you're to the level where you pick up a pact...

Lore Bard and Ranger both make good 'wander the world exploring for stuff' Indiana Jones style. Beastmaster can even have a truffle seeking boar or the like.

Druid, of course, has spells to grow herbs from the clippings you gather and comes with Herbalism Kit already.

Fighter. It breaks expectations, can be made workable with the right background, and becomes uniquely memorable if the info ever comes out.

Take a d12 and roll on the class sheet and you have your answer.

I'm hoping for Rogue or Paladin.

Any class can be made to work, but Ranger or Totem Barbarian make the most thematic sense to me. They (in theory) know the land, they know what to look for, what to avoid, and how to get what is needed with a minimum of fuss. The same holds true for druids, but they're somewhat less likely to use nature's bounty for their own gain

Any character with the Hermit background could fulfill this concept.
