The hills of the Wyrmsmoke Mountains echoed with the sound of a hundred of war drums, and a hundred bonfires danced to the beat. Though the sky was black, the entire valley was lit bright enough to drown out the stars. A massive cloud of smoke reflected the orange-red glow back from the heavens.

There thousands of warriors had gathered-hobgoblins in armor dyed scarlet with the blood of those who would not yield, massive Bugbears with arms as big around as a mans waist, and swarms of goblin archers, skirmishers and worg riders atop their mighty steeds. Among the expanse were the scaled ones as well, who towered above the rest. Long they had fought each other, tribe against tribe, race against race, engaged in an endless test of battle, feud, and betrayal. No longer. Not this night. For tonight they stood together. Hated enemies stood solid, shoulder-to-shoulder, shouting together as brothers. Together they danced, and drank, and sang their songs. Together they shook their blades at the blackness of night. Together they saw that they were strong, possessed with a strength they had not previously known.

"We are the Kulkor Zhul!" They shouted, and the hills shook with their thunderous voices. "We are the people of the Dragon! Uighulth na Hargai! Uighulth na Suraum! None can stand before us! None can escape our might!"

Though the boisterous noise was ear-shattering, one by one the tribes fell silent. Soon only whispers could be heard. Whispers and the creak of leathers as thousands of goblinoid heads turned to look upon the place of speaking. There, a single champion emerged. The assemblage parted like soft man-flesh ripped by a blade and allowed the the figure to climb the stone stairs carved into the side of the hill. A hundred bright yellow banners stood beneath him like a phalanx of spears, each marked with a great red hand. The warpriests holing the banners chanted a myriad of battle-prayers as the champion ascended.

Upon reaching the summit on the hundredth step he stopped and turned to face the waiting masses. He was tall and strong, surely one of the many hobgoblin cheiftains, but dull blue scales gleaned along his shoulders, and jutting horns swept back from his head. I am Azarr Kul, Son of the Dragon!" he bellowed. Hear me, warriors of the Kulkor Zhul! Tomorrow we march to war!"

The warriors roared their approval, stamping their feet and clashing spear to shield, they praised the charismatic leader. Azarr Kul waited for the din to drown with the calm coldness of an ancient great wyrm, but his raised hands signaled he had more to say. The warpriests of the Doom Hand have shown us the way! They have taught us honor, discipline, obedience---and strength! No more will we waste our blood fighting with each other. We will take our prowess to the true enemy! We shall burn the woods of the elf, crumble the mountains of the dwarf, and pillage the lands of the man-things. And of what remains, we shall make our own. Under the banner of the Red Hand of Doom we march! With the guidance of The Mother we shall find victory and conquest! Remember, warriors, this day. Remember that you stood here this night as warriors of the Kulkor Zhul! For a hundred generations your sons' sons will sing of the fowl blood you spill with your swords! You lineage will forever remember the glory you harvest from the last breath of the true enemy in the nights to come. NOW my brothers! Now is our hour of vengence. Now is our time to follow our righteous path. FOR NOW! WE MARCH TO WAR!"

The burning hills were to small to hold the shout the Kulkor Zhul gave in answer to their warlords call.

The afternoon sun beats down on you. Summer was just coming on as you left Dennovar and now leaving Terelton, the days are hot and dry. The heat and dryness are so great the only moisture in the air is that which comes off your brow. You feel lucky to have Jacob's ale to ease the dry taste in your mouth when you stop to rest. This end of the vale is sparsely populated and the trek on the Dawn way seems monotonous. A seemingly endless line of dusty flyspeck towns. Finally, however, your destination is coming upon you. The town of Drellin's Ferry lies only a few miles ahead of you, a settlement hard on the borders of the Witchwood Forest. It would make a fine starting point for a group of weary adventures who wanted to explore the wood.

Its hot! Damn hot! To hot to be marching along the road. Give me a DC 20 fortitude save. -4 if you are wearing ANY armor. Survival checks can augment this check (see the skill). Failure means you are Fatigued.

Rakiir walked along the left side of the Caravan as they travelled the long road to their destination, the heat took it's toll on the man's body but his years of training were enough to keep him going strong. When the sight of the town appeared in the distance he smiled to himself, glad to be near his destination and pondered on what would happen next and the possibility of him and the guards continuing onwards together once Miko was safely escorted to his destination. His mind then wandered to the merchant, wondering what exactly he was taking to Drellin's Ferry and if the person he was taking them to was a cruel and vicious sort that would warrant such fear from the merchant.

Jacint is hot, tired, and irritable. More irritating than the heat is that it is affecting him. He was a soldier, he should be able to march for days in weather like this with no sign of weariness. His time as a beggar had clearly crippled his stamina. He cursed his uncle silently for exiling him as he plodded along.

The road crests a hill and then descends into a dusty groove in a large, shallow dell. An abandoned farmhouse, only partially visible between the trees, stands on the side of the road atop the dell. You've passed a dozen such places much like this on already to day, but this one feels different.

Everybody give me a perception roll. DC 22 If you succeed you may open the next spoiler, if you fail open the "Fail" spoiler. Everyone may open the "ENCOUNTER" spoiler.

Thanks to the burning sun, you catch the glint of mail through the trees by the side of road. Fierce warriors-tall hairy humanoids with wide mouths and flat faces lie in wait! An Ambush!

You may act in the surprise round. Remember you only get ONE move OR standard action in a surprise round, not a full round of actions.

You are unaware of the ambush and may not act in the surprise round. Please wait until round 1.

Again for combat I want you to make your post with you actions, initiative will be handled in the order you post. I will take into account all actions and then write a turn summary before moving onto the next action. A map for this encounter can be found here. (http://beta.ditzie.com/74754/550b6e12e1fef)If you are unfamiliar with Ditzie, you can move the tokens and then hit enter, then copy and paste the new link with your post.

I am still having trouble with my token tool, so very basic tokens here. Black letters are PCs white letters are enemies.
R=Rakiir
S=Severan
A=Armand
J=Jancit
j=Jacob (yes this this a lowercase. That's what you get for being a halfling and sharing a first initial with a fellow PC.

the white R's are hobgoblins.

Still a bit rusty on combat, hopefully this will go smoothly.

Terrain: Forest squares are filled with undergrowth (2 squares of movement to enter and provide concealment) squares with trees provide cover to people in that square. The sides of the road are steeply slowed (4 squares of movement to enter)

Rakiir tensed up as he spotted the glimpses of hostiles through the woods, and after hearing Jancit's yell he prepared himself for battle, getting into a strong, defensive stance inspired by Panthers before bending his knees low and launching himself upward over the slope and into the forest area, landing near one of the enemies.

At the start of the day he would've gotten into Psionic Focus and activate his Empowered Strikes ability as part of his morning meditations.
Using Acrobatics to jump up into the foresty area, and using Fuse Styles to get into Panther Style and Iron Hand Stance.
Iron Hand Stance: +2 Shield bonus to AC
Panther Style: While using this style, when an opponent makes an attack of opportunity against you for moving through a threatened square, you can spend a swift action to make a retaliatory unarmed strike attack against that opponent. Your attack is resolved after the triggering attack of opportunity.

Before Jacints warning can do any good the trap is sprung. The raiders waste no time demanding money, but go right into combat. A half dozen arrows fly from the woods all around you in a criss cross. The attackers seem to be well trained and go for the horses on Mikos wagon first. Jacint is quick to see this and manages to shoot an arrow out of the sky with supernatural precision, but another finds it mark. The arrow connects with the horse right where neck meets shoulder and it panics. The wagon streaks down the road at a gallop knocking several crates off as Miko and the rest take off down the road.

Rakiir leaps into the brush eager for a fight and Severan lets loose a flame from his mouth, from the spot he targeted a charred corpse of a hobgoblin slinks from the forest above into the road below.

Just as the wagon passes another enemy presents itself. A hellish dog with fire streaking down its mane leaps from the trees seperating the rest of you from Miko and his wagon.

https://downatthecrossroads.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/hellhound.jpg

Jacobs dogs (who are behind you) attempt to turn and flee but are having trouble turning around being attached to the wagon. Instead they just sit and bark incessantly.

New map is here (http://beta.ditzie.com/74754/550bab8c64d47). Notice the new "H" in the road infront of you, that is the Hellhound. I removed the dead (technically dying) hobgoblin rather than crossing him out, because I did not set up the map to do that yet.

Hellhounds: [roll2] [roll3]
[roll4] [roll5]

Jacob rushes forward to confront the hellhound, from here he can see wagon ahead has stopped and another half dozen hobgoblins begin to approach it cautiously.

The hobgoblin that Armand threw spends the turn simply standing and getting orientated after being flung across the road. The other one fires at Jacint dealing 7 damage with a thick and heavy arrow.

Jacob is ambushed by a second Hellhound hidden in the trees, both dogs breath fire on the halfing.

Rakiir sees the bushes move in front of him and the snapping of a twig. There is another enemy between him and the hut, though he can not see it.

Another Hobgoblin runs from the hut. This is clearly the leader of this raiding party he is wearing lighter armor, but his movements suggest a more skilled warrior. He draws two vicious looking shortswords, and takes a stance that resembles a dragon about to strike. "I see you have the dragon in you!" He shouts apparently directed at Severan. "So do I. Let us see whose is the greater!" His challenge issued he awaits your answer.

The Hellhounds do 14 damage combined (6 and 8) to Jacob, but you can save DC 14 for 3 and 4 respectively.

Not able to see the enemy he quickly decided to try and flush him out, he focused the psionic energy that empowered his blows into his right fist and thrust it forward, launching the ball of energy at bush the enemy disturbed. Round 2 Summary:

PC's turn:

Rakiir's attack and provocation seem to have little effect on the unseen opponent in the trees, though the bush has seen better days.

The Hobgoblin leader clearly attempts to dodge Jacints arrow, but it is far to swift, even for a trained warrior. The arrow catches him in the chest and the extreme wind pushes him backward, nearly knocking him off his feet. He is clearly very upset, and badly injured, he also seems to have a new target in mind.

Jacobs suit increases in size and intensity and he slashes at a hound. It lets loose a yelp of pain but recoils only slightly before preparing to retaliate.

Armands razor sharp crystals shred the trees and leaves as well as the two hobgoblins, in spray of red and green. One falls to the ground, the other manages to avoid serious injury though.

This is short lived as another bout of flame issues from Severans mouth and the last of the hobgoblins hiding in the trees goes down.

Opponent's turn:

Though the unseen opponent in the trees does not show himself, it is clear he is a caster when portal opens behind Rakiir and a 3rd hellhound leaps at him. It catches him by surprise and sinks its flaming fangs into his skin (6 damage total 2 standard and 4 fire.) Rakiir just slips away as the hounds fangs close in a vicious bite of the empty air.

Both hellhouds in the road pounch on Jacob though with his improved armor only one is effective. The bite inflicts 13 damage, 9 standard with 4 fire.

The hobgoblin leader recovers and wades into battle, he makes a lazy swing against Armand without even looking as he passes that is ineffective, and easily dodged. His eyes are focuses further down the road and clearly his primary quarry is now Jacint.

Begin round 3, give me you actions!

The disciple makes a Heal check with a difficulty equal to his opponent’s armor class. If this check is successful, then the target is made flat-footed and the disciple may make a melee attack against him, inflicting an additional 1d6 points of damage if successful. If this Heal check fails, then his opponent sees through this ruse, and the disciple makes his melee attack with a -2 penalty as the enemy is anticipating his attack.

Round 3 Summary

PC's turn

Jacint charges the commander and makes another devastating attack. The hobgoblin staggers, but does not fall. He is clearly injured however and appears to be holding on by will alone.

Rakiir turns on the new opponent and quickly dispatches him. The fallen hound disappears in a pile of smoldering ash, its body returning to whatever hell it was summoned from.

Jacob again slashes at the hellhound and again hits. The hellhound continues to harry him however.

The turning point comes when Severan blasts the Hobgoblin leader. Miraculously he appears agile enough to evade most of the flames, but the effort is too much for him. The few scorches he does sustain are enough to drop him. He falls the the dirt, his two short swords strewn about his feet.

Armand seeing Jacob struggle moves to assist. He wacks the hound with the strange walking stick he carries, but yet the hound remains resilient.

Opponents turn

An unseen voice yells out "Farkur!" The goblin word for retreat, it is a strange sounding word, weaker than the harsh and brutal language normally is.

The hobgoblins on the path ahead quickly follow suit and flee into the woods to the west. The hellhounds do the same, but in there retreat Jacob finally sees the oppertunity to fell his foe. One more slash from his mentally manifested weapon is enough to end the beast. It too bursts into flame and leaves only a pile of ash where it once stood.

The other Hellhound, unscathed joins the hobgoblins in retreat. You may pursue if you wish, but clearly the fight went out of these raiders when their leader fell. There is also the matter of Miko and his wagon, and attending to the few wounds you suffered.

Luckily the wagon seems undamaged as well and it looks like no cargo is missing, you drove of the raiders in time to save it. The Horses however are both dead. One to arrow wounds and the second to the hacking of a longsword. Miko seems worried, but he is presently more concerned with another matter. "My hat! Have you seen my hat?" With help for Rakiir and Jacint, Severan is able to stabilize all 4 hobgoblins. It will however take a charge from the wand to get them healthy enough to talk to.

The paper in the hat appears to be a map of some kind detailing the surrounding area. Miko is very grateful to have his hat back. "Er...thank you. Now as for the wagons. Well I see no other way, someone will have to go ahead to Drellin's Ferry and get some more horses...either that or we somehow rig Armand's horse and Jacobs dogs...its just to big a job for one horse. Hmm, now I will stay and er..Rakiir and Severan, probably Jacob too. Armand and Jacint should go ahead. There thats settled. No Problem!" He seems satisfied and begins to go about unpacking the wagon and setting up a camp.

When he sees you reviving Hobgoblins he is rather curious and slightly disturbed. "What are you doing? Your healing them? They attacked us! You wouldn't heal a dog that attacked you would you? No you put it down...what a waste..." When it is clear he is not persuading you otherwise he gives up. "Okay then just tie 'em up or something...they are dangerous! Well thats settled. No Problem."

"The dead are much harder to question and organized and ruthless bandits such as these bespeak of a greater organization and purpose than typical highwaymen. When have you heard of mere bandits summoning beasts from the lower planes? So the question is, do we wish to question them now, and which should we start with? I would suggest one of the lesser, see what we can learn before waking the leader as I would expect him to be less willing."

The goblin eyes you with suspicion. He clearly does not trust you, and is ready for deception. Still the possibility of escape is tantalizing. "We are the Kulkor Zhul. Help me to escape and I will tell you more!"

Kulkor = Dragon Zhul=Tribe or Family roughly Kulkor Zhul means "Dragon Tribe", but to a native Goblin speaker such as you it would be more accurate to say "People of the Dragon". You get your Daniel Jackson on "Its not 'Door to the Heavens' its 'Stargate'".

Though you are much more convincing than Jacint, the method of your questioning is not. This is clearly a battle hardened fanatic with a great will. Still your line of questioning does soften his resolve and instead of a stoic silent Hobgoblin that refuses to answer any question you have a raving mad religious fanatic. As the battle ended and the others got to work Armand watched the forest around the group wondering about the enemy and listening to the conversations. As they spoke something piqued his interest. He smiled at Jacob when he heard the man speak of watch and the man would hear a chime followed by speech should he let the foreign thought into his head. I require little rest. If you take the first watch, then I may take the others.

As the mindlink established or fizzled he moved on to the hobgoblin. As he moved he shifted his holy symbol to under his robes and walked to the one Severan was speaking to and stood beside Severan.

Armand began to speak in goblin as another chime went through the minds of everyone around him "If the situation is as dire for our kind as you say, would it not be better to surrender ourselves now and throw ourselves upon the mercy of Azarr Kul than run? Willing slaves would make easier servants than those who resist under the heel of his boot. If you were to tell us where we could surrender ourselves then perhaps we could offer ourselves to him?"

DAY 2

The questioning continues throughout the night, but soon morning arrives. The hobgoblin captives are no trouble and thanks to Jacobs care are doing well again. Their compatriots are likely long gone as no attempts of escape or rescue were made during the hours of darkness. Though he does not loot the dead bodies and allows the captives to keep their armor, Miko goes about disarming the captives and collects there weapons which he adds to his treasures in the back of his wagon. "Can't have them armed now. If you aren't going to take them I can get something for them in Drellin's Ferry. No Problem."

As the sun rises a rancher and three cows are coming up the road. He introduces himself as Arryn and tells you he is taking these 3 to market in Drellin's Ferry. Though he is somewhat intimidated by the tied up Hobgoblins, Miko works his magic. After a whole lot of honeyed words and a very little bit of coin the wagon is hitched to the cattle and it is road ready again, albeit somewhat slower than if it were drawn by horse.

Well treated and fed prisoners in tow, you break camp and begin again on the road. It is only a few miles and had you not been attacked the night before would have arrived the night before. After only a few hours of travel, the road decends into the small town of Drellin's Ferry. The town is built on the near side of a broad sluggish river. From your high point on the road you can see the remains of six old piers jutting from the water that mark where once a bridge stood. Though its is long gone, the people of Drellin's Ferry are inventive. Instead a pair of long thick ropes cross the river, each is secured to a large flat-bottomed ferry boat, and you realize where the town gets its name. A few fields and orchards surround the town, clearly prospering from such close proximity to the river.

As you approach a group of armed townsfolk-three in leather, and one in mail-stand guard. They watch you warily, but as soon as they see your prisoners walking along behind the wagon they brandish weapons and take a much more lethal stance. "Halt and state you business!" Says the man in mail as he draws a longsword. The others ready spears.

"Indeed! Where?" Before you can answer he is talking again. "Bands of these murderous savages have been stalking around town for days. You're lucky you came through it." He sneers at the captives, and only hesitates slightly when his eyes scan over Jacint. "Apologies!" He holsters his sword and presents his open hand to Severan. "Sergeant Hersk." He shakes firmly and with vigor. "Go with Lucas here, he will take you straight to Soranna, our constable. She'll tell you what to do with those beasts. Well boy!"

The youngest of the remaining guards a pimple faced boy no more than 15 years, probably less, stumbles to attention and presents himself. "Right this way, sirs." And he escorts you into town. You get a dozen stares from various townsfolk as they stop to gawk while you pass.

Now fetch Norro. Tell him what I have told you, then return to your post." Lucas runs across the green to the building to the east. The rest of the guards remain.

"I am Captain Soranna Anitah, of the town guard, and the Chief Constable here in Drellin's Ferry. You have done well to bring me these prisoners. You must be capable fighters, many others have not been so lucky as you. These beast have killed many travelers and smallfolk already."

"And we will kill many more!" The leader of the hobgoblins responds. This is enough to earn him a solid smack with the back of one of the guardsman's spears. "You will speak when spoken to!" She informs him. "Lock them up, I will deal with them later!"

She turns her attention back to you."I am afraid I can offer little bounty...how is 10 gold? She reaches for her belt pouch when she finally gets a good look at Jacint, she stops and instead places her hand on her sword hilt, but does not yet draw. "What is the meaning of this?" They have attacked outlaying homesteads, and waylaying travelers like yourselves on the Dawn way." He swallows a lump building in his throat. "People have died. Killed by these savages."

Soranna takes note and steps in as Norro gathers himself. "We have had some trouble with them before. A quick attack on a homestead on the west side of the river. But nothing this bad. They have harried us for days, and are crossing the river. As you say they have hellish beasts with them. It appears a large and aggressive tribe has come down from the Wyrmsmoke Mountains. Rakiir relaxed a little as he stood there listening to the two speak, when the speaker asked for aid he nodded to the man. "My business with the merchant is almost complete, give me a short amount of time and I will be happy to aid you as best I can."

"Yes. Infact Iormel's Warehouse is just over there." He points to a building a little ways down a side street. "Once I have his payment I can pay you the rest of what I owe you. No Problem."

"I believe I could be of assistance. This keep, you called it Vraath, sounds like one of their leaders is there. Perhaps that would be a place to start. How far is it from here? What lord owns it that they would be able to use it?" Severan asks after making sure the speaker has their full story and not just the second hand news that is surely shooting through the town.

"Vraath Keep is about 15 miles, along the Dawn Way. If you leave now you can reach it before night fall. If you wait until morning, and push hard, you might make it there and back before the sun sets."

"No lord holds that place. The Vraath family disappeared with the fall of Rhest, oh 150 some years ago. The castle is in ruins and it is said to be haunted. Most folk avoid it, though I doubt the hobgoblins would care. It's off the road a ways though, and the trails have been reclaimed by the Witchwood. Hard to find if you don't know where to look. You might find a guide if you lack a good tracker."

Soranna sighs. "There is only one guide if the Witchwood is your destination. Jorr Natherson. No one knows that wood better. His cabin is a bit out of the way, if you follow the Witch Trail, rather than the Dawn. His is a left at the first crossing, about 7 miles in, near the black water." She seems to remember something, with a start. "Jorr..um..maybe he's not the best option for you. His.. wife... ah well. He has a murderous rage for the Hobgoblins, and he might not take kindly to your friend here. He's quite the archer himself see, and tends to shoot first with um...well, you know, your kind."

Jacob calls forth a set of Full Plate made of the same material as his weapons, a Scimitar and a Shield.
"The arms and armour of Sarenrae are yours in this battle, for I in good conscience cannot let this stand." He says before kneeling at their feet.

"Its an old castle. I doubt you will find anything of worth there, but yes you are legally welcome to it. Thank you. Please let Soranna or myself know if you need anything. The entire resources of Drellin's Ferry are at your service, any guardsman can fetch us for you." With that Norro and Soranna leave and enter the large stone building where they took your prisoners.

"Well then, now that that is settled. I must deliver my goods, and pay you gentlemen." Miko chimes in. It is only a short walk to Iormel's Warhouse. You are immediately accosted by the incessant barking of 3 large dogs upon coming near his property. The noise draws the owner.

"Blast! What is going on!" Iormel is a miserly old man, probably in his 80's. He walks with a cane. "Ah Miko! You are late! I will have to dock your pay!"

"I was attacked by raiders, old man. I would have been here last night if not. You will pay me in full, and compensate me for the two horses I lost."

Iormel scoffs, and the two begin to bicker, yelling curses and insults at each other. "You can't swindle me, do you know who I am!" "You don't scare me. They broke my damn nose! I literally bleed for this shipment!" "I'll have you locked up you conman!" "I'd like to see you try, I brought protection this time!"

"Now, then," Severen inserts himself into the conflict calmly, "It seems the nature of your dispute is contractual. I am not party to the details of what pertinent clauses define late fees and damages during services rendered, but I understand that it is common to wave such for circumstances beyond the reasonable control and foresight of those executing the contract. In this case, there are multiple witnesses, as well as prisoners, attesting to the fact that the shipment was beset by bandits on the road, a road that should be reasonably expected to be kept clear of such by the governing authorities. After said encounter, which required action most daring to foil and retain life and limb, goods or no, circumstances simply did not permit the timely completion of the delivery. Now, unless the goods in transit are such that a half-day delay would spoil them irreparably, then I can see little valid grounds for pursuing damages against the shipper. As to if compensation for loss to property is due, that must rely on the governing document. I doubt any judge would be sympathetic to pressing the first matter, so would advise an amicable exchange, considering both parties ought be pleased that the goods are delivered and both parties live to make the delivery."

Iormel is stunned, and heavily insulted. "You swine! Deal my goods to Jendar and you'll be dead by morning! Goons or no goons!"

It is not long until the wagon is gone from Iormel's(13) and heading across town again. To reach Jendar's(17) one apparently must cross the river. The river is fast moving, but shallower than it is wide.. Two enormous ropes as thick as a mans waist span the Elsir river. Each is attacked to a huge wooden capstan. A pair of draft horses harnessed to the device turn it, drawing the ropes to which a large flat bottomed barge -the ferry- is attached. Another team across the river work a second barge if needed. A nearby shack holds spare rope and various tools and material to keep the ferry in working order.

Miko his wagon and any who don't take his payment board the ferry(14) for the otherside.

The ferry is slow moving and it takes about 6 minutes to cross the 300 feet of water. In that time you meet Drathgar the ferry opperator. "Norro told me to treat you like townsfolk. That means no charge for your first two crossing each day. After that its 1 silver per on foot, 3 with a horse." He takes the time to tell you about himself. "I am the great-great grand nephew of old Drellin himself. Built this here ferry when the floods came and wiped away the dwarfbridge." He indicates the stone supports(15) that still remain jutting from the water.

Its only a short distance to Jendar's from the ferry. The halfling comes out to great Miko and the two quickly settle on a price. "There. now we may settle. Its a good thing no one else desided to stay. I could have only paid a few of you." Now his coin purse is overflowing though and he doles out the sum of 5gp to each of you.

Jarett Nurth is a speaks with a funny accent and her hair is black and slicked back in a style unlike the rest of the women of Drellin's Ferry. Her dark skin and jet black eyes betray her origin. "I hail from lands far to the south." She explains as she helps Severan find some rope. The shop is well stocked with tools, toys, food, clothing, special substances and other basic adventuring gear.

The Green Apple is a lively taphouse and inn. The proprietor is a stout Dwarf named Tharrma. "You must be Severan." She greets as soon as Severan enters, and talks fast before you can even begin to question the townsfolk "Norro has taken care of your stay. All you needs will be met for as long as you need them. I hear you are off to Vrath Keep. A fowl place if you ask me. Used to be a bastion that protected trade on the Dawn Way. Amery Vraath inherited the keep shortly after the fall of Rhest, and it was that change which lead to its down fall. He wanted to cleanse the woods of its evils. Chief among them was the Giants. He and his men hit the Giant Tribes hard, turned them back to the mountains and burned their holdings in the Witchwood. They had dealt a blow the Giant tribes has still not recuperated from, long lifespans and all. Giants only have young every few decades see. Anyway, the victory was short lived. The Giants struck back during a furious thunderstorm. They spent the night tearing the walls away. In the morning 4 giants lay dead, but Amery and his men were all dead. Amery's body was never found though. Treasure hunters have searched. They say he became a part of the keep, merged into the walls. Its not a rumor, I heard his wails myself. If you travel to the Keep at night, you can hear his moaning, and see him manning the battlements. Oh yes, its a fowl place indeed."

Entirely up to you. Arrangements have been made for a stay in the Green Apple, but you can always stay at a later date, when you return. It is getting late mid afternoon now. If you do leave tonight you could still reach Jorr's cabin before nightfall, but would likely come on Vraath Keep at night.

Your business concluded and the Green Apple established as your base of operations in Drellin's Ferry, you are ready again to push on. Drathgar charges all but Severan 1 sp to cross the river again (3 sp if you have a horse) and per Soranna's direction you take the north road leading out of town. The footpath is known as the Witchtrail because after meandering through farms and orchids it eventually leads into the dense Witchwood forest. It is crisscrossed by dozens of other trails but, by following the most prominent one, easy to follow. No stones or bridges pave the path, just dirt and the occasional log across a stream.

Late in the evening, as the shadows of the trees are getting longer than the trees are tall, the trail leads past a small cabin. A ramshackle front porch is lettered with fishing baskets and skinning frames. The cabin overlooks a dark bayou with old grey cedars draped in moss rising out of the water. An old skiff is tied on the nearby shore, and a little smoke curls from the fieldstone chimney. A trio of large hunting dogs rest under the porch, but they have not seen you yet. This must be the home of Jorr Natherson.

The man has a leathery look to his face and arms, and his hair is long and unkept. He aims a crossbow, and has massive bowie knife strapped to his left thigh. "Against the Hobgoblins?!" He spits a black liquid into a pot on the porch, apparently derived from dried leaves he is chewing. Woods is rotten wit' 'em. Can't stand the limey bastards. S'pose it was Soranna what sent ya? We were hoping you would be able to guide us, we would rather not have them know of our approach obviously. We have some coin, to compensate you for your time."

"There is one small matter, a member of our party, a warrior that fought beside us at no small risk to himself, has, well, a bit of goblin blood. He is committed to the fight, but I thought it best to mention it as his appearance does tend to set people on edge, in these parts." [roll0]

A few sideways glances at Jacint to betray his unfriendly prejudice toward the Half-Hobgoblin, but for the most part he simply avoids interaction, rather than instigating. The cabin is spartan, with a large central room that doubles as a kitchen and foyer, A wood burning stone stove and a table and chairs are the only furnishings. A small bedroom to the back, seems a bit more personalized. Jorr works quickly to prepare a pack and gather some crossbow bolts, he seems excited to be taking the fight to the enemy. "We would do well to take them by night, to conceal our approach, they will have the numbers so we best take them by surprize." At the first mention of waiting till morning he simply scoffs. Day 3

The night passes without event and early the next morning you set out again on the witchtrail. Jorr leads the way through the forest. A wide expanse of water has flooded the woods in these parts and the terrain is wet and marshlike. Early in the day you come to a valley and many areas of the lowest laying land are now pools of algae filled water. A thrill of frogs and the buzz of insects fills the air. Luckily there is a rickety looking causeway made of thick planks of wood lashed together with mossy rope. The foot bridge runs for several hundred feet only a foot or two over the black water. Up ahead you can make out the wreckage of a wagon, lying on its side and half sunk into the flooded forest, about thirty feet from the causeway.

"That was not here 3 weeks ago when I passed before, perhaps another unlucky traveler." Jorr states. Then he stops quick, and points to what looks like a crocodile wading near the wagon. "Best leave it be." he warns as he begins to cross the bridge.

Round 1 Summary

Severan's flames severely burn the beast and blacken its skin.

Both Jacint and Armand attempt to shot the beast, but neither extreme supernatural training nor psionic ability help as both shots miss their target.

Jorr proves he is the skilled archer Soranna claimed he is, In the time Jacint and Armand fire a single shot each, Jorr fires, reloads and fires again his crossbow. Both shots find there mark, though the Hydra seems little swayed.

repelled by Severan's flames the beast submerges into the water and though you can not see it beneath the murky water, it creates a swell of water as it moves closer to the bridge, perhaps in an attempt to head off your approach.

Not intimidated in the least Rakiir runs directly to the center of the bridge, ready to head the hydra off himself. He stands beside Jorr and attempts to command the fight. "Quickly, get across the bridge!" He instructs, as he assumes a defensive stance. "We will hold him off." he says with a glance to Jorr.

Jacob concentrates and his trademark soft blue psionic energies surround him in a suit of heavy half-plate armor. A blade and shield also appear in his arms. "Allow me to aid you friend, Rakirr."

You vaguely recall a legend about a similar creature. In it a hero slayed it by severing all of its heads.
You identify the creature as a Hydra, and recall it is dangerous to sever its heads, for they regenerate and multiply. Only flame used to cauterize the severed heads wound prevents this. It is more effective to attack the beast body.

Armand shoots electricity at the mass of water and it appears effective as the water glows blue and the beast withers in pain.

Severan waits for the beast to rise from the water and when it does he blasts it with flame. This time the hydra is better prepared and the surface of the water takes the brunt of the attack, as only its 8 heads are above the water.

Jorr runs across to the other side of the bridge and fires again. This time the shot is long. "C'mon run!" He screams.

The Hydra is enraged and when it rises above the waters it is ready to kill. Three heads nip at Jorr and two leave deep gashes in his flesh

Rakiir suffers a similar fate as two heads nip at him also leaving his flesh ripped and torn. (13 damage)

Armand is lucky to escape one bite but a second cuts deep (11 damage)

The round continues, so Rakiir, Jacint and Jacob may still act. I just wanted to get the Hydras attacks and get him above water again. He has 10feet of reach, so melee attackers on the bridge can not attack him where he currently is, unless they want to get wet.

Round 2 summary cont

Rakiir unable to damage the beast from the bridge bravely leaps into the water, where his unarmed strikes are more effective. He swings away multiple times to some effect.

Jacob moves up the as well and shoots a bolt of blue mental energy from his head at the beast.

The Hydra attacks at the three closest foes Armand, Jacob, and Rakiir.

Armand easily evades the first head, but is biten by the second. (8 damage)

Jacobs armor proves to be hearty as he avoids all the attacks at him.

Rakiir is biten (5 damage) but the real danger occurs when one head latches onto him and drags him under the water.

Armand flinched as he was hit and felt it make a heavy gash as he tried to move out of the way of the heads that focused on him. As he dashed away from the creature his flesh had apparently mended as if little had happened to him.

As he took a new position his eyes began to glow a silver colour and he stared into the eyes of the creature.

Use Resilience and spend 8 power points to reduce the points of damage taken to 3.

At Armand's manifestation the Hydra recoils, it draws itself deep underwater and begins to swim away as quickly as it can. Apparently it is not interested in a meal that is so hard to acquire.

Rakiir bursts from the water and grasps for air. "Something spooked it." he explains. "It just let me go."

Jorr looks grim. "Gather yourself, catch your breath. The keep is not far." He says through his own panting breath. "Usually these creatures lurk deeper in the woods. Something has forced this one beyond its usual hunting grounds."

The wagon and its occupants are decaying and partially digested. A dozen or more half eaten hobgoblins and goblins litter the surrounding mud and swamp. Their gear is broken and rotted save for one champion who wears a pristine breastplate made of mithral.

This is a +1 mithral breastplate

Severan pries the fine armor free and rejoins the others. "A fine piece of work.looks like the creature took a goblin supply wagon. It's officer was well adorned."

Though the armor is heavier than Severan is used to the superior craftsmanship and material make it seem as if a second set of skin. Since he was the one to drag it from the swamp, it is only logical that he claim it for himself.

After a short rest you are back on the road and quickly meet again with the Dawn Way. "We should stay off the main road." Jorr suggests and instead leads you to a small trail that mirrors the Dawn only a few hundred feet into the woods. After a few hours of travel a haunting sight looms out of the woods ahead, a ruined keep. The old castle sits atop a hillock and you can catch glimpses of a broken tower as you make your way through the trees. Eventually Jorr takes a sharp right and heads into the woods. A moss covered stone on the path marks the spot, and you see he is actually following an overgrown trail. Despite the overgrowth, it is apparent the path has seen some resent use, but not yet enough to reclaim it from the forest.

"Vrath Keep." Jorr whispers as he sneaks up the trail, he waves his hand low as he crouches, signaling that now is the time for stealth. He points to the path and a few tracks. "Hobgoblin" he whispers for the first. "Worgs" He says at another, one that looks like that of a wolf but larger.

From this vantage point, and with the aide of the midday sun, you can see that the Keep is in poor repair. The gatehouse is partially collapsed, as is a section of the wall to the south. A small wooden building sits next to the remains of a long abandoned garden in front of the keep. The walls surrounding the keep are about 15 feet tall with a two story tower looming in the southwest corner of the courtyard within. Large boulders lie strewn amid the ruins of two gatehouses, and a massive humanoid skeleton slumps against the northern one. Amid the bones and tattered pieces of worn hide armor, you catch the movement of a sentry. Apparently the ruined gate house is manned by a trio of hobgoblins.

"It will be difficult to approach unmarked with them on guard. We may be able to come from another angle. I certainly can, but the terrain may not allow for others to do the same. Perhaps the stones could offer sufficient cover?"any way around to the side or back?

"There, around the side. I say we make for that gap in the wall. If we skirt the woods and use cover we should be able to reach it unobserved."If no one objects, stealth [roll0], keeping maximum possible distance from guards and using cover as available. Flying as needed.

Armand nodded to Severan's plan, thinking it smarter than simply running at the gate, though he supposed with his powers he could even place merit in that... "One at a time or all at once?"

Same as Severan, if no one objects. Keeping distance from any guards, using cover, and keeping to the woods around the keep as long as is possible.

Stealth roll: [roll0]

You manage to sneak in close enough to hide behind the shed, with the plan of entering through the hole in the wall, Severan is the first to move. He makes it with no trouble, but when Armand makes the same move he is spotted. Luckily you still have the initiative. Hopefully you can take down the Hobgoblins before an alarm is raised.

Thats it. You guys get to go first since you know about the goblins. You can take full round actions rather than surprise round (since you were caught, but aware of the them first) Today Jorr is "B" since I will need the "C" later on.

As Armand realized that he had been less than subtle in his movements, he changed tact and moved slightly more into the open, put on an innocent face, and readied himself to loose a ray of cold for when one of the hobgoblins moved into range.
