A "fallen" angel can be classified into one of three categories: Outcast, Excommunicated, or Corrupted.

Outcast: An angel who has committed a grave infraction against the beliefs it served can become an Outcast, exiled from its home plane until such time as it is once again worthy to rejoin the ranks from whence it came. This may involve fixing the wrongs it committed, learning to see things from a new perspective, and/or truly atoning for its errors. Such an angel usually wants to regain its former position, but is not necessarily in any hurry to do so.

- Alignment: Any, but usually good or neutral with good tendencies. The Law/Chaos axis usually remains the same.

- Mechanical changes: None.

Excommunicated: This represents a more serious breach with the angel's former master (if any) and comrades. Such an angel is not expected to ever regain its former position, although this remains possible. Such angels are typically stripped of some of their powers, either as punishment or simply to make them less dangerous. Such an angel usually has an agenda significantly different from that which it used to support. They are not, however, considered mortal enemies of their former comrades.

- Alignment: Any, but usually neutral. The Law/Chaos axis might remain the same, but if not, this may be the cause of the conflict.

- Mechanical changes: The angle loses its wings, its planeshift ability if any, and any clerical spellcasting abilities it may have had due to its race. If it has actual cleric levels, it can move those over to another patron, but the racial caster levels are no longer there to stack with.

- CR: As base creature -1, or as base creature -3 if it lost spellcasting.

Corrupted: A Corrupted angel has gone over fully to the side of evil, and has found a new patron to provide it with powerful new abilities. It can pretend to still be on the side of good and often does so to fool others, presenting itself as an Outcast or simply claiming that its new patron is actually good. A Corrupted angel is often able to tempt some of its former comrades into becoming fallen angels themselves, though not necessarily Corrupted ones. It is considered a mortal enemy of its former master and comrades.

Alignment: Always evil. The Law/Chaos axis usually remains the same.

- Mechanical changes:

Any positive energy healing abilities can still be used, and the negative energy equivalent can spontaneously be used instead. For example, a Corrupted Astral Deva could use any combination of cure light wounds and inflict light wounds up to a total of 7 times per day.

Likewise, it can reverse abilities that involve alignments, but can choose not to. For example, it can use its protective aura with a magic circle against evil effect as normal, or it can reverse this to be magic circle against good instead. It can't use both forms of the aura at the same time. It has this freedom regardless of which form it's in.

Dark Visage (Su): As a swift action, it can change between its original appearance and a monstrous form. The latter is similar in basic shape but often has black wings and a hideous face, and perhaps a decayed appearance. When in the monstrous form, it has the Evil subtype instead of the Good subtype, and gains a +4 racial bonus on Intimidate checks. Its Damage Reduction becomes X/Good instead of X/Evil while in this form. If it had Regeneration, Good rather than Evil becomes a component that can help bypass that.

Imitate Alignment (Ex): When in its original form, mechanics that depend on alignment treat it as being Good rather than Evil. For example, a paladin's Smite Evil ability would not affect it, but an unholy blight spell could damage it while in this form.

Spellcasting: It retains any racial clerical spellcasting ability. If it formerly had access to the Good domain, it now has access to the Evil domain instead.
