A new building popped up just a few meters outside the town, it has a notice hanging outside.

Matteo (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2363766&postcount=414) opens the door slightly apprehensively, walks inside

Hello? Is anybody there? I-I saw your notice about recruiting?

InaVegt

A pit fiend looks at Matteo.

Yes, we are in fact recruiting. I'm Stragashkan, the owner of this place. You're a lawyer then?

Stragashkan pulls out two chairs, sits on one and places the other nearby.

Please be seated, young man.

Matteo is initially shocked to see a demon, but with all the strange things that have happened today, he's just not up to another freakout...

He sits down in the proferred chair.

Yes sir, pretty much. My name is Matteo Elderson. Before I came here I was a final-year law student, practising under the guidance of my university. I specialise in criminal cases, but I've studied lots of different areas, such as contract, property, civil liberties, family law, and a little bit of medical law.

((Devil, pit fiends are devils, not demons))

Any experience in the field?

Jazzman
2007-04-10, 07:44 AM
A little. I was about 3 months into my internship when I was brought here, mainly pro bono advocacy, but a fair few cases involving document drafting, transfer of property, that sort of thing.

InaVegt
2007-04-10, 07:51 AM
Stragashkan nods.

Well, have you won any cases so far?

Jazzman
2007-04-10, 08:05 AM
I've been involved in about 6 complete adversarial cases, working alongside a supervisor, who ensured I complied with codes of practise. Three of the cases I won, including an appeal against a murder conviction, one was settled out of court, one we received partial judgement for, and the last one I lost. I've done about a dozen or so non-adversarial cases.

He looks up at Stragashkan

Sir, I know I'm inexperienced by most people's standards, but quite frankly, I'm tired, I'm disoriented, I was ripped from my home dimension by a raving lunatic, and apart from my music I don't know any other way to support myself. I'm just trying to get by right now

InaVegt

Well, you can start out as a junior. You'd gain half of the money the customers pay, the other half goes to the company and you'd cost 5 gold piecer every hour. Since you're not from this world I'll inform you the average commoner earns one copper a day.

He hands Matteo a contract.

Stragashkan the pit fiend, from now on called the employer, recruits ______, from now on called the employee, for the function of Junior, as detailed in the lawyer's handbook, employer's edition, from now on called the handbook.

The employee will be responsible for the following:
Spending as much time for his clients as needed.
Check into the office for any new cases every day.
Do whatever is needed to satisfy his clients.
Pay half of what he earns in name of the employer
Any duties appropriate for his function as detailed in the handbook

In return the employee will gain the following from the employer.
A minimum wage per month, as appropriate for his scale, as detailed in the handbook.
Be served with a price for his work as detailed in the handbook
The chance to rise in scale for hard work

Signed

Stragashkan the pit fiend (employer signs here)

_______ (employee signs here)

Your current scale will be scale 5, the standard for a junior to start at, the wages depend on scale, it's roughly scale per month in gold pieces as minimum and scale squared divided by 5 per hour. We don't go higher than scale 50, but to reach that you'd need to become a partner first

Jazzman
2007-04-10, 09:27 AM
((sorry about the wait. I had to pop out for a bit))

Looks over the contract, then back at Stragashkan.

So if I'm reading this right, I'll get 2.5 gold pieces per hour, OR a minimum of 5 gold pieces a month, whichever earns me more? And there's no limit to the number of hours I can work.

Gives it some thought.

Okay, I'll sign. If possible, I'd like to be listed as a criminal specialist. That's what I have most experience in anyway. I'll go and sign up at the courthouse after this, see if they can refer me to people charged with offences.

Signs contract.

Great, welcome to to the firm, Elderson.

He smiles at Mateo.

Keep in mind the 2.5 gold pieces per hour is gained by helping clients, while you can spend time on helping your current clients during office duty there isn't additional payment for those, that is included in having a minimum to what you earn.

He goes to the board and updates it.

Matteo looks relieved. He smiles.

Thanks Mr Stragashkan. Do I get an office?

InaVegt
2007-04-10, 09:45 AM
Yes, your office is behind that door.

He points at a door which appears as he says it.

Jazzman
2007-04-10, 09:49 AM
Matteo is pretty unfazed by the sudden appearance of a door...so many strange things have happened today anyway. Nodding to Stragashkan, he opens the door and walks through.

((Is that the normal way buildings are constructed? So i can make a small house or something just out of nothing?))

InaVegt
2007-04-10, 09:56 AM
((Well, not the normal way. It's pretty easy for spellcasters at the power level of the town to do though.))

The office is 2 meters wide and 3 meters deep and has several cabinets for files, as well as an office table an 3 chairs.

Jazzman
2007-04-10, 10:46 AM
Matteo spends some time perusing the office, admiring the carpentry.

A few minutes later, he exits the office, nods to Stragashkan, and exits the building.

See you later sir, I'm going to go and explore

InaVegt

See you later, Elderson.

He just sits there, thinking.

Matteo re-enters the building, looking rather tired. He nods to Stragashkan.

Hey sir. If you dont mind, I'm gonna sleep in my office tonight. Tomorrow I'll go find somewhere to live. Got enough mo-(yawns)-huh-honey to pay rent from busking.

Matteo pushes open his office door, deposits his saxophone on one of the chairs, and falls into the comfy chair behind his desk. He is asleep within minutes.

Matteo, only just asleep, hears the Random Lawyer run in and out of the building. Muttering under his breath, he opens his office door, spotting the armored figure at the entrance of the lobby. Willing himself awake, he walks toward the figure

Good evening. Welcome to Stragashkan's. Can I help you?

In that case, I'm afraid you need to see Mr. Stragashkan. He's probably in his office. Just down the hallway there.

Matteo points in the direction of Stragashkans office. Then turns round and walks back into his office, shutting the door as he goes.

He proceeds to slump back down in his chair, and he is soon drifting back off to sleep.

InaVegt
2007-04-10, 08:24 PM
Stragashkan's door has a note saying

‘Slaying some celestials, come back later’

((I'm currently to tired for the town, and I still need to finish reading some stuff up, finish my sociology essay, and sleep in the next 3 hours))

Jazzman
2007-04-12, 05:45 AM
In his office, Matteo wakes up with a jolt. His mouth is dry, his back aches, but he feels refreshed. As he looks at the small, unimposing clock sitting on his desk, he lets out an exclamation. He's been asleep for a day and a half!

Man, I really must've been out of it...

He double-checks that his saxophone is still there, then pats his pockets down, looking for the bag of platinum Lillah gave him during his busking. He is relieved to find it in his suit pocket.

Right, today I need to get myself sorted. I can't sleep in this office if I'm stuck here. So, I need some new clothes, somewhere to sleep, and from the look of a lot of the people out here, something I can defend myself with.

He dusts off his suit, then walks out the door, leaving his saxophone behind.

Outside, Arc (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2365765&postcount=415) reads the notice posted there. "Oh, a lawyers-for-hire service, eh? I do think I'll apply for a while, until I find a job that requires my..." He holds the handle of one of his pistols briefly, and lets go. "type of expertise..." He then contemplates on what might happen if he became a lawyer, and decides against it. He slowly walks away.

Erin, female, lawyer, and a 5-2 record as a lawyer.

InaVegt
2007-04-14, 02:09 PM

Okay, I'm putting you down as a junior in scale 6 for now, if you don't mind. This would mean a guaranteed 6 gold pieces a month and 7 gold pieces + 2 silver pieces per hour for your cases, half of the money you earn with your cases goes to the company. Are you okay with this?

Matteo walks through the door to the law firm, walks through the lobby and into his office, and picks up his saxophone that he left in the office earlier. He writes a note and leaves it on the sidetable just outside his office. It reads:

"Off to run errands, back later."

Matteo exits the building.
