Week 1. Day 1.
Douglas awakens is a field. His head is spinning. He can't remember who he is, why he is here, or even where 'here' is. A gentle breeze blows and the rustling of grass can be heard. You are standing in a very large field. There are hills in the distance and a box about 100' away from you. Upon investigating the box it appears to be sealed, but nothing a little tugging couldn't break. There is no lock, no labeling. As you look around all you can see is fields and some gently rolling hills, no woods, water, nothing but grass. After about an hour you suddenly remember your name.

It explodes and you die! No, but seriously.

2 waterskins, a backpack, flint and steel, and 3 days of trail rations are inside. (All the gear you currently have from your list.)

To the South west the hills seem oddly larger.

Given the distance this likely means mountains of some sort. They are all the way at the extremes of your view, so they are probably rather large.

Douglas stared all around him for any signs of life - animal, human or otherwise. As his name came back to him, it was with the rush of relief he would have had at finding a long lost pet. He contemplated calling out for help, but without knowing whether anything that would come would be even friendly to him, he decided against it.

Turning his attention to the box, he remembered his mentor's wise words: Don't pick up something strange without first knowing more about it.

Before even touching it, he decided he'd investigate it with magic and then decide what to do with it.

Cast detect magic and concentrate on the area of the box first. If nothing detects as magic from it, go ahead and examine the immediate area. If anything detects as magic nearby, Douglas will investigate that first (spellcraft roll is for that purpose).

The box and immediate area are magic free. While careful in your investigation, you do accidentally bump it. There is a faint noise inside of it, but nothing happens. The noise was metallic yet light. It sounded like steel, but was too faint for it most likely to be harmful.

Adoward awakens is a field. His head is spinning. He can't remember who he is, why he is here, or even where 'here' is. A gentle breeze blows and the rustling of grass can be heard. You are standing in a very large field. There are hills in the distance and a box about 50' away from you. Upon investigating the box it appears to be sealed, but nothing a little tugging couldn't break. There is no lock, no labeling. As you look around all you can see is fields and some gently rolling hills, no woods, water, nothing but grass. Due East there is a single spot on the landscape that seems taller than the rest. To the south east the hills appear significantly larger. After about an hour you suddenly remember your name.

A backpack, bedroll, spell component pouch, 2x Torch, and 4 days of trail rations are inside. (All the gear you currently have from your list.)

Curiosity getting the better of him, Douglas searches around for a stick that he might be able to use to open the box. Failing that, he grudgingly kicks at the top, hoping to open it up without the use of bare skin.

Who would leave a box out in the middle of nowhere? Who would leave me out in the middle of nowhere with a box? he says to himself. He immediately stands up straight and admonishes himself. Great, you are already talking to yourself. Who knows what other bad habits you'll develop out here...

Assuming he has shoes on anyway. If he has no shoes, I guess he'll use his hand if no other hand-surrogate-like-branch is around...

You have whatever mundane outfit you selected, shoes and all.

There are no branches to be found. The repeated kicks to the box work enough to jar the lid loose. Especially since one of them cracks the wood of the side. Some manual prying by hand speeds up the process. There doesn't appear to be a glue or any other residue on the box. It must have simply been forced shut with enough force to allow it to stay sealed. The box is small, about arms length and wide as your chest.

There is a loud pop off in the distances to the West as the sun reaches midway through the sky. The noise wasn't an explosion, more like a vacuum of air suddenly being filled.

TelinArtho

Douglas was both relieved and dismayed to see such things in the box. Whoever, or whatever, put him here clearly meant him no good will.

If this is the way we'll have it, I guess then I shall just have to survive in spite of it.

He took up the small bits of comfort in the box and put them into the backpack and picked up the box as well.

If the box can fit in the backpack, he'll leave the rest in the broken box and put them all into the backpack. If not - he'll be content to carry the box

Without a better compass by which to journey, he aligned himself in the direction of the "pop" and aimed for the nearest, largest rise in the rolling hills. Something to give him the least bit of a vantage point and keeping an eye out for anything that might be useful along the way, especially tinder.

The box barely fits in the pack. You are unable to close the top of the backpack and it is stretched to its limits. Every misstep is accompanied by a bonk on the head from the box. You quickly learn this fact and adapt your gait as to not be abused in such a manner.
It is hard to keep your bearings as you go up and down the hills. The sun seems to be moving in a rather straight line from the direction you are going to where you came from. This linear movement can help to make sure you are going in a straight line. As you travel further west you can see a small mountain. After a few hours you can see some trees in the distance. Behind them appears to be nothing but stone. Intent to find some lumber you wander towards the trees. There are indeed several sturdy trees. The grass continues not much beyond them before abruptly stopping on the rocks. It takes you the half of the day (of an 8hr travel cycle) to reach the trees and rocks. The trees are large easily 50' tall. There are a few smaller ones at the edge of the field away from the rocks. They aren't dense enough to be called a forest but perhaps an orchard if they bore any fruit. You can see a few other orchards like the one you are in dotted around the edge of the rocks in both directions.

You started about noon, so you can travel more if you wish but it'll be about 5-6pm. Feel free to stop and take other actions if you didn't want to go that far, I'm fine being dynamic and updating things.

Knowing that he only had some short time before the land fell to darkness, Douglas considered his rudimentary knowledge of the weather as well as the resources before him.

While I wait for info about the actual rocks and trees before him (posed in the OOC thread), he'll take a few minutes to make sure weather isn't going to turn unpleasantly sour. Also, I assume he is not overly hot nor cold since it wasn't mentioned.

Survival (check for weather): [roll0]

Douglas searched the area for a number of different things: rocks that had a sharp enough edge that they might be used for tools as cutters, rocks that might be suitable for throwing or slinging, and, most importantly, any straight branches or logs that could be used for tools or for shelter. His focus at the moment was shelter, but he knew he'd need the tools eventually too.

Adoward walks up to the box and goes through increasingly drastic measures to open it until it is open, but tries his best not to break the box while opening it.

Once the box is open Adoward puts everything in the backpack and carries the empty box remains the him as he walks east towards the tallest hill, trying to get a better view of the area, hoping to find some river or other body of water. While walking he keeps an eye out for rocks or stones, preferably around the size of his fist, and puts them into a pocket of the backpack.

In the future search checks would be needed when searching for specific things. Survival will be needed if you intend on making a shelter. [roll0] (I'll manually add your mods) Lucky you I rolled a nat 20!

Viewing the sky the weather seems to be clear. You can imagine it'll be partly cloudy over the evening and the next day. There is a [roll1] percent chance of rain tomorrow. You manage to find an abundance of rocks and limbs. You could probably make a decent shelter for 1 and have spare. Not all the limbs are perfectly straight, most bend and curve. You find some with Ys. They are all fairly sturdy, so they'd work for multiple uses. You don't find anything large enough to be considered a log. You about 10 stones suitable for throwing as weapons. There are clearly several larger rocks that could be used or shaped into tools.

Try and make some rolls when searching for items (such as search/spot) yourself. It'll help us keep things moving. [roll2]

Cresting the hill you realize that the south is dominated by the mountain you saw before. That likely means rocky terrain in that direction. Given the lush grass rainfall is probably your best bet for water as it would have to occur frequently for such growth. You can't hear or see any immediate sources of water. The grass is tall and rustles every so often against the wind, probably from wildlife.

Happy to have found a few items he can work with, Douglas turned towards making a simple shelter. Using the largest boulder in the area as a natural wall, he worked on protecting himself from the elements around. He kept what tinder he had for fire in case he needed it, but for now, he wanted to focus on shelter.

Survival to build a shelter with the materials he has [roll0]

Assuming the roll is enough to build a shelter successfully, Douglas will turn to fashioning points out of the sharpest rock that he might be able to work into a spearhead.

As the light of the day began to fade, Douglas looked over his makeshift shelter and was impressed. He never considered himself a perfectionist, but aside from the lack of anything substantial to tie it all together, he guessed it would fare pretty well in heavy winds even. Inside the walls (rock on one side, rock and wood on another and primarily wood on the last side), he had put together some of the branches and layered them with as many leaves as he could find to make a temporary bed that was up a little off of the ground. He didn't have anything significant of a door, but he had a couple of larger pieces of wood to at least make it a narrow opening that he could move in order to get in or out.

Proud of himself, he put the finishing touches on it by adding a ring of rocks into which he could make a fire.

Not making an actual fire yet - just making a fire-pit. If the weather does turn cold though, he'll start putting together a fire in the night time. Otherwise, he'll be sorting through the rocks and branches he has left for ones that will be the most suitable candidates for fashioning tools and/or weapons out of. He won't do the actual crafting until the morning though.

Adoward decides travel to the southern mountain. Before going he tries to get a strap of cloth from his outfit in the hopes to make a sling in case he finds something he doesn't want to get close enough to fight in hand to hand combat. On the way he will still keep an eye out for stones.
Taking 10, total 14 spot

Traveling south you keep an eye out for stones. There isn't much in the grassy area in which you started. You find the odd pebble here and there, but it takes you a half day's travel (4hrs) of walking south before you reach the rocks. As you approach you can see clusters of trees dotting the landscape. The clusters seem to smoothly curve off into the distance to the East and a bit South. When your approach them you realize that they seem to be lining the rocky terrain, likely they are growing where the bedrock is deeper under ground. They'd serve as a decent navigational marker. Once reaching the rocks your search for sling bullets is far more fruitful, though none are perfectly smooth. The sun is starting to fade from the sky, you probably only have a few hours of daylight left.

Building such a nice shelter took time. You were able to be more selective in which rocks you used and saved, so you have a small pile to fashion into spear or arrowheads. Such crude weapons would also require some lumber, of which you have plenty.

DC 10 to craft a spear. You'll hone the stone, and attach it to a stick using braided bark as a makeshift rope for lashing. Exceeding the DC means you can a) craft a higher quality spear less likely to break (every+2 increasing the dice by a side) or b) craft an extra spear (every +3= another spear). Decide before you roll. Failing by more than half (5 or less) results in destroying the materials.

TelinArtho

My plan was to rest for the night and work on putting together the spears in the morning. If I do have time to do it in the evening though, he'll get started on it. The post below is in anticipation of that. Oh and he'll plan on making additional spears rather than good ones for now.

Craft (weaponsmithing) [roll0]

Well - so much for extra anything...

Douglas takes the last bit of daylight and puts together the first impression of a spear using the stones available to hone one rock to a point and a sturdy and mostly-straight branch as the shaft. Tying it all together with some back, he decided it was good enough and put it down next to him and lay down to hopefully get a few fitful hours of sleep.

Oh - did you want to include the bits about eating over the course of the day? Wasn't sure if you wanted to explicitly track that or just worry about it on a "day by day level"

With the remaining daylight Adoward goes to the closest tree and tries to make a rudimentary shelter for the night. He then lays out his bedroll and near by clears an area for a fire later on.

(It is an RP. If you don't RP eating, I'm assuming you don't. It can be as detailed or complex as you want.)
You work on crafting spears until the night closes in. As it becomes too dark to continue working you are left with a completed spear and a 2nd one that has almost been finished, all that remains is the wrapping.

(Sure is survival for a shelter! Simple ones at least)
You manage to scrap together supplies from the surrounding area. You slowly assemble a reasonable shelter, so when you are finished the quality of it is impressive. Considering it is a more temporary shelter designed for survival it is sturdy. It could likely hold up against some significant weather including rain. It blocks the wind and helps to keep you warm at night. Being so close to the edge of the rocks you are able to not only clear an area, but drag a flat stone near your shelter for a fire.

Finally setting himself up for the night, Douglas turns his thoughts to his stomach, which had been relatively compliant with him all day. After a long day of walking and working though, he needed some nourishment. Not that the rations would be great for that long term, but it was at least something he had right now.

He finishes off half of the ration and puts the rest of it away. Best to start conserving now. Who knows when I'll find a reliable source of food. He also drinks from one of the waterskins, leaving it about half empty for now as well.

His finished spear by his side, he lays down to rest for the remainder of the night.

Adoward gathers firewood with as much daylight as he has left if any and makes a very small fire attempting to light it right after the sun sets and there is still a bit of light around. He uses some of the smaller twigs as kindling and fuels the fire with the remains of the box.
I doubt I need to roll survival since I would essentially be taking 20 since you don't really stop trying until you light it but I might as well roll for it just in case you would rather that. [roll0]
With a small fire to warm him through the night Adoward lays to rest. He eats a full days worth of rations and lays to sleep for the night.

Taking 20 takes 20x as long as normal. Could waste a ton of hours doing so. Rolling worked out better for you.

Week 1. Night 1.
Adoward manages to start a fire with relative ease. Feeding it with the box proves to be a bad idea, causing it to flare up into a large fire. Adoward quickly remedies the situation and using the wood he'd gathered manages to setup the fire to burn low for most of the night, providing him with heat.

Douglas rations his food and water, to the protests of his system. Rest doesn't come easy because of it, but it does come. He is able to sleep through the night though he wakes up a bit chilly in the morning.

The night is uneventful for either man.

Week 1. Day 2.
The sun crests in the Western sky signalling the start of the day. Time holds little relevance here. You'd expend great effort to know the exact hour. You'd even have to apply significant effort, probably in a stationary location, to track the days, weeks, and months. By the time you awaken the sun is in the sky, no traces of dawn.

Adoward wakes up and stretches his back waking to the morning air. He then sets on upon the new day starting off with gathering about a dozen or so stones for use in his sling looking among the foot of the rocky hill. Then gathering a moderate amount of firewood, at least enough to get through the night, and leaves it inside the shelter. After this he tries to forage for food if any is to be found, starting near the trees.

Douglas stretches out and eats down the other half of the ration from the night before. He drinks down the rest of the waterskin as well in order to get himself in as good a condition as he can for the day ahead.

Okay Douglas. Time to find some necessities. Let's do a circuit and see if there is anything in the woods beyond and then maybe see about moving on from here.

He takes up his spear and the belongings in his backpack (food, waterskins, flint and steel, remaining choice rocks, the unfinished spear and 3 good sticks), but leaves the rest behind (including the box) and sets out into the woods. He takes care to mark his path as he goes as well. His intent right now is to find a source of water nearby, but will also keep an eye out for any edibles he might spot.

(It isn't so much woods as it is a cluster of trees. You can see through to the other side.)

Luckily Adoward is camping out near trees. There is plenty of firewood to be found. He gathers more than a days worth, probably two and a half nights. He finds 5 or 6 bullets for his sling and then begins to forage for food. Finding food is much harder. He manages to find a few mushrooms and dig up some insects. They are less than ideal, but he won't starve. The near by rocks don't seem to contain much life. He'd have to venture deeper into the grasslands to hunt more. The lack of water nearby is also hurting his chances of finding wildlife.

Douglas doesn't have any luck finding water. As far as he can tell he'll be drinking dirt soon. Luckily in the middle of the tree clusters there are a few apple trees. They hang just out of reach, but Douglas has plenty of sticks and is able to easily knock a few to the ground. He gets quite a few this way, but he'll have to climb the tree to get more. He gets enough to eat for a few days (3). The apples flood his backpack and arms.

TelinArtho
2015-03-20, 08:57 AM
Well that's something at least, Douglas says to himself. He polishes an apple on his shirt and starts to eat it while he continues onward.

If there's nothing nearby, I might be able to collect rainwater. If it rains... if it rained enough to give me a good amount of water... Bah - curses this is infuriating. Stop talking to yourself already!

Douglas admonishes himself and instead continues on walking. He considered the possibility of turning back and getting the broken box for a little more storage of apples, but he decided it wasn't quite worth it.

Just a little further...

Douglas will continue farther away from camp and searching for water. The apples should at least help a little there, but not enough for sustenance long term. He is not going to climb up the mountain and rather would stay closer to the trees and the grassland edge.

Keeping close to the trees and rocks means traveling closer to the mountain. Douglas walks for several hours, completely having forgotten about the strange popping sound that started this journey he never the less travels towards it. He loses track of his bearings a bit as he talks to himself. After about two and a half hours walking he sees something. An imprint, strangely familiar. Looking at it for a few seconds Douglas realizes the flattened grass looks oddly box shaped. Exploring the near by area he finds the imprint of a body. He is not alone. He has wandered away from the edge of the rocks, though he is almost on top of the mountain now. He can still see the familiar wood line edge.

Well, hel-... Douglas starts to say, stopping himself as the other drops to the ground. He keeps his spear in hand, but not in a threatening way, as he approaches a little.

Is that your imprint in the ground back there? If so, then I would say you and I are in the same sort of predicament. And if I do say so myself, I'm glad I'm not out here alone... but where exactly are we? Do you know?

Douglas will go on talking nervously if the other doesn't say anything, but otherwise offers him an apple of peace.

So, I've found a fair bit of food in these apples, but not a sign of water. How about you?

2015-03-20, 10:37 PM
"Oh sorry, you startled me, you are the first living thing I've seen besides some bugs." Adoward replies nervously as he picks himself up and wipes the dirt from his clothes. "I haven't found much in the terms of food or water but I do have a sturdy shelter not too far from here and plenty of firewood. Would you like to work together? It'd be nice to have someone to work with instead of just ignoring each other." Adoward takes the apple thanking the stranger, wipes it on a cleaner part of his shirt, and takes a bit out of it. "I sadly don't know where we are, although I haven't put much thought into it, my main concern was staying alive. I woke up yesterday in a haze with a box that had some basic supplies in it, without that I would have died."
"Also on the topic of water, where did you find these apples because they gave me a good idea for a way to get water."

TelinArtho
2015-03-21, 08:15 AM
Douglas considered the man's words and while he had no reason to trust him, it certainly seemed like they were in the same predicament. Still revealing his source of food... well no matter to that. If he has an idea on water, let's take him up on it.

They're back here, back towards where I had made my shelter. If you think there might be some water or a way to get water, then I suggest we relocate towards mine and make do over there. If you have some supplies you want to grab first though, maybe we should do that.

The name is Douglas by the way. Hopefully working together we can come to some answers on why we're here...

Jthw

"Hello Douglas, my name is Adoward."
"I would rather hurry and work on the water as it might take a while to work and setup, plus this apple is the closest thing I have had to water since I woke up yesterday. Where I have set up is a bit far...Only thing I have there any way is a bit more than a nights worth of firewood, maybe a night and a half. I kind of planned on being alright with getting lost if it happened. With apple trees where you are camped it shouldn't be hard to get that. My main idea is the trees have to get water some way, of course it has to rain some time but I don't really want to wait for that. But the trees still have water, so what I'm going to do is try to make a tree tap."

Assuming Douglas leads the way Adoward will follow him.

TelinArtho
2015-03-22, 08:48 PM
Douglas nods and shares another couple of apples with his new ally.

Well I'm willing to give it a try, but as far as I can tell, we don't really have much chance for a significant shower anytime in the next couple of days. Of course, I can tell about as much as the local barmaid, so I guess that's worth little to nothing. In any case, follow me.

I probably should have mentioned before, but the trees where I got these apples from are all very large. We might be able to get some more of them with some climbing, but that isn't exactly my strong suit and I wasn't about to go and injure myself getting them on my own.

When they get back to the orchard-like area, Douglas shows Adoward the trees bearing fruit, and, later, the camp area.

This here is what I've built. It is a little cozy for just one, but I think we can expand upon it and it certainly could be shored up to make it more sturdy and comfortable for two.

"I can try my hand at climbing some time, after we expand the camp and get some water that is."

Douglas works on finding some materials, but everything he works with turns out to be rotted wood or infested with bugs or some other difficulty. Eventually, he just sets down and centers himself.

Don't try to do too much at once Douglas. Focus on one thing and it will come.

Douglas and Adoward travel back to Douglas's camp much in the manner he left it. He keeps the rocks and trees within sight to aid in navigation. The journey is calm, their conversation spooking most wildlife away well in advance.

After investigating the camp and deciding on a course of action the two set to work. However, Douglas and Adoward struggle to make any progress. Adoward's convinced his idea about the tree tap is sound, but the smoother stones for sling bullets aren't ideal for shaping wood in this manner. He is able to see the rocky terrain nearby, it may hold more stone. Things this far from the mountain seem much smoother though and the life is a bit more abundant. Douglas hunts for more materials, but is clearly distracted and indecisive in his search so the effort yields nothing useful for expansion. He finds a few sticks that can be used to fill gaps in the existing shelter, but that is about it.

Douglas, a little fed up with the whole process himself, refocuses on a different activity: collecting firewood.

I've got no need for fire today, but I expect we'll want for something more than apples at some point and who knows when the heat will be needed eventually.

After a little while, Douglas has collected enough firewood to at least last them through the night should they need it and he was satisfied with that. As darkness was settling in, he checked in on Adoward's progress.

I don't suppose that spearhead will still be usable once you are done with it?

If it is, Douglas will finish off the spear once Adoward is finished with it. He'll just concentrate on making this one sturdy. Though - now that I think of it, I'll need a new post for that - so I'll wait for the determination before posting evening actions.

After such frustration crafting the tap, you are easily able to tap a tree and even have enough free time to craft a backup spout/tap. Meanwhile Douglas busy's himself with collecting more supplies and is able to craft a few spears. You awaken in the middle of the night to snarling and barking. As you open your eyes you see a pack of beasts closing in on you. One beast, more brave than the rest charges in to attack. Its bite sinks deep into Adoward's leg and takes hold. The success of the first beast seems to have encouraged the others, and they close in.

Awakened by Adoward's plight, Douglas stood up, grabbing the spear by his side and thrust at the nearest animal, hoping to deter it from being so aggressive toward him. His thrust however was terrible timed and the spear head pushed into the ground instead of into the animal he was aiming for.

He cursed under his breath and then called over to Adoward. Are you all right over there?

Apparently I fail at reading. Instead of attacking while prone, Douglas would stand up and attack if something was in reach.

Aaaah! Get it off of me! Douglas yells, grabbing his spear while kicking at the dog.

Douglas thrusts the spear clumsily at the dog, hindered by his prone position, but hoping to deter it just enough to give him some space.

The beast is unfamiliar to you. It is large and shaggy with glowing eyes. However it does remind you of wild dogs. It is the size of a wolf, so it may be one of those as well. The one attacking is clearly leader of the pack, but the others will soon follow its lead. You know it is best to finish off the leader and the others may spook and flee.

He then turns his attention to the slain beasts. "Hmm... I wonder if these would be decently edible because apples would get boring after a while."

Does the 22 knowledge nature get if they would be edible? I can't make another check on them because I haven't learned anything new, unless how well they get hurt by a rock flung at them is vitally important. Thanks. Mere luck really. We might have to sacrifice some of our rest for the ability to keep watch. If I had better access to my magic, well that would be helpful...

Douglas knew that his spells would have been no use in that skirmish anyway with their extended procedures, but he definitely didn't want to be caught unawares again.

If we're going to do anything about eating these things though, we'll need a fire. I do have a flint and steel to help. If you'll help put it together I'm sure we can get one going in short order. Cleaning the critters will need light anyhow.

While Douglas and Adoward wait for the "food" to cook, Douglas returns his thoughts to his inability to use the bulk of his spells without the required components.

I suppose this might have come up before, but I do have some magical abilities but I'll need some components in order to make use of them. I've heard of some casters who are able to do so without components, but I have not yet mastered that and I think until we can get some, I'll have to do without.

That said, if we can find some wax that I could fashion into a candle, I can use that for some time and it will be a versatile spell indeed. I might even be able to use sap if we can get enough of it together.

Also, keep an eye out for any rocks that are rust colored tomorrow. That sometimes means that there is some iron present and I can use that for a different spell that would help us.

As Douglas is talking Adoward walks over to his backpack and rummages through it. As he finishes talking he pulls a small pouch out and walks over to him. "So, you are a caster? Here, take this. I can't use it for a while anyway."
The pouch is a spell component pouch Adoward found in the box he woke up next to.

TelinArtho
2015-04-06, 12:25 PM
Douglas, stunned to be offered such a simple solution, took the pouch and rummaged through it, mentally cataloging what he had, what he would still need.

Thanks. This should help out significantly. Quite a boon for you to have it... it makes me wonder further if we were placed here as a team or more by coincidence...

Shaking his head, Douglas returns to taking inventory of it.

Heh - wasn't expecting that...

So Mr. DM - how many uses of the appropriate component do I have access to? Summon Monster I is a focus - so not a big deal there. Enlarge Person is a pinch of iron though - so I expect I'll need to watch that more carefully.

Deadlykire
2015-04-07, 02:43 PM
Its okay, I gave it to him and he'd not yet offered it so I had to reread things to make sure I had actually given him the pouch....Anyhow I'm flexible here. Don't go crazy and we won't have a problem. I don't want to add paperwork by saying "12" or something. It is your component pouch after all, so what would you have loaded into it?

Jthw
2015-04-07, 04:05 PM
I honestly forgot I had it until he mentioned material components. I didn't even have it marked on my character sheet but went back thinking that you had given it to me because I remembered thinking that rangers got spells at level 1 just had them really slowly but them realizing that they didn't so I just threw it in the backpack and forgot about it. For what is it, I'm not sure. I've never really looked into what the material components are but in this situation its important. I'd probably have many of the items needed for ranger spells and a few of the other common material components in case someone else needed to borrow one. So pretty much if it's a ranger spell yes there is plenty of it, if it's another spell then I'd say there are like 1d6+2 or something like that for that specific component, and that is only if I had to put a game number value on it. Then again that amount in one component pouch might be an insane amount I honestly have no idea.

Deadlykire
2015-04-07, 07:42 PM
You didn't have a spell component pouch listed, it is literally Douglas's pouch you were given. Spell component pouches are nondescript in quantity because they are cheap and the game isn't designed around a "survival" type thought process where you can't just go buy more.

TelinArtho
2015-04-08, 06:33 AM
Douglas fingers through the pouch a bit more, bending down to catch it in the light of the fire a little more and is happy to see the two major components he would need.

This will do famously. Almost seems like how I would organize my pouch, but this one looks more worn... Well - this means I have access to the spells that might be the most useful to our cause, but we'll see. I can make one or both of us very large and I can bring forth creatures from other planes, though that only for a short while. We'll have to exercise caution though, because finding more powdered iron might be a bit difficult out here.

Douglas smiles, though it seems like a smile reserved for a lost friend rather than of triumph. Inwardly, he felt very ill-at-ease without access to his spells, even if they wouldn't have been terribly useful for their encounter so far.

To be honest, I'd actually rather keep track of the spell components. It is a survival game, so it should matter. I had forgotten about components when I drew up the character and considered it an interesting challenge to try to make do. I was actually laughing when I thought about making a candle out of sap...

so in light of this, Douglas will probably start searching for components he think will be useful in his spare time. I'm going to assume he has enough powdered iron (for enlarge person) for a week's worth of castings - which is to say 25 uses (4 spells per day x 7 = 28 - but let's have a nice round number. After all, he shouldn't be using it all of the time...).

I'll double check his cantrips, but I think he'll be fine with those. I'll keep track of it in any case - so you needn't worry about it.

I'll add more about the evening later in this post - feel free to keep going though until the morning.

"So, do you want to go back to sleep now or just stay up and power through it because the beasts did interrupt our sleep. Also if you didn't notice the tree tap is working decently." As Adoward finishes his sentence he puts his head under the tap to take a drink.

I think we should eat our fill and drink what we need and possibly fill the other waterskin I have. We should also be cautious about night time from now on to be certain. I agree, let's get things together. I'm not a trapmaker, but I could make the instruments used in the trap well enough. Plus, we've already got a few spears to work with for now. Maybe for now just identify the tracks and we'll keep them in mind for later if we have time.

We'll also need to gather more firewood today, but we can do that as we go as well.

Douglas suggests a few options of things to pursue for the day.

Okay - so if we call survival checks for 2 hours a piece, here's what I'm thinking:

Douglas works on reinforcing the walls so there is only one entry point
Adoward works on digging out some pit traps, into which we can put some spears. They need not be too deep at this point, just enough to provide a deterrent. Alternatively, if we can find a way to set up some springs (with branches for example), then we could do without the digging.
Douglas gathers some more firewood, straight branches and good stones for fashioning into better spears.
If there is a weapon Adoward would prefer, I can try making it, but I wouldn't be able to do anything bow-like for instance.
We might consider looking for another source of water or trying to tap more trees. I don't know how long that will last. Having containers for that would be a good idea - we've only got the two waterskins and my broken box. Maybe we should go back to your makeshift camp for that.

Other ideas?

Douglas and Adoward come up with a rough plan on how to approach the day. Douglas looks over their things for a quick inventory.

Right - I'm fine with that plan - and good point about the creatures needing water. Maybe - edit that table with the rolls we'll need and just double check with our DM that we're clear on that? Then we can bang them out and hopefully make some progress...

Just for tracking purposes, I had created one spear before I met and another 5 more afterward. Douglas had also gather 10 rocks for throwing before he made the spears. I haven't added anything of yours here - so please let me know if there are things I should include here.

6 stone-headed spears

Adoward beings the day by tracking the animals before moving onto looking for their source of water or really any water in general. Then moving onto working on making tree taps, then setting snares. Into the afternoon he starts to dig a pit near the front of the entrance. Then he starts gathering supplies with Douglas. Next he tries his plan at getting the harder to reach apples from near the tops of the tree and then finally attempting to make rope from either some of the found materials or the taller grass in the area if that seems to be a better option.

[roll0] Survival for tracking (+2 if they are indeed magical beasts)
[roll1] Survival to look for water, trying to use the tracks to help me if they lead to water.
(Take 10) total 14 Survival to make more tree tap(s.)
[roll2] Survival to set snares (Assuming douglas was successful with making the parts, otherwise use the roll for a bigger start to the hole)
[roll3] Survival for hole (or bigger hole) Building it almost right in from of where the entrance will be, will a little room on the sides for us to enter/exit.
[roll4] Survival for gathering materials (straight sticks, sling rocks, sharp rocks, etc.)
[roll5] Attack roll because my plan is to try to get the higher up apples by using the sling to hit them/the branch they are on to get them to fall. Also taking 10 (total 13) on climbing a bit to make it easier to get them.
[roll6] Survival to make a rope.
(I don't think I'm using survival enough, I guess its fitting for a survival campaign :smalltongue: )

Add these to that list of things: tree tap, 2x Trail rations, 2x Torch.
I feel like we should have things that we keep with ourself and a collection of things we both can use freely. Like we should both have one waterskin to carry with ourself, but torches can be used by either of us. Like if you wanted to use my sling for something you would have to ask but you can go ahead and use a torch. The things i listed above I would show to you just for you to know they are available. But I would want to keep them on me when leaving the camp (for the tracking) but would leave them out when I plan to stay around the camp.

Douglas does what he can to aid Adoward in the tracking of the beasts that fled off into the night. He had never attempted tracking before, but he figured he couldn't make things worse by trying to help. He hoped...

Douglas also worked on gathering materials to make more crude weapons to arm some protective snares and traps around the camp area.

His gathering finished, Douglas worked on putting together the sticks and rocks that could make effective snare parts - small spearheads affixed to shorter sticks and rocks that worked on their own due to their relative sharpness. Douglas also broke some sticks that could be used for spikes in the pit trap.

For the rest of the day, Douglas filled the hours with gathering more pieces to the shelter (both for walls and for a potential gate/doorway) and then reinforcing the shelter itself. As the evening hours settled in, he set down with another piece of meat from the animal, two apples and finished off the water in the waterskin, refilling it with the tap.

Sounds good to me on the shared equipment - consider one waterskin on your sheet then.

You are able to track the beasts back to the rocks. The tracks become difficult to follow after that. You think you are able to hear water off to the south and west, but it could just be the breeze as well. You aren't able to gather supplies and begin making traps. You begin digging the hole, and when you look up into the distance you can see a figure. The stance indicates it is likely standing on 4 legs, though you only make out 2. It's torso is upright, with four arms. It is clearly moving towards you, though at a slow pace.

"I have an idea." Adoward blurts out as he circumvents the ant-like creature, loading his sling as he all the while. As he gets behind the creature, with his friend on the opposite side, he attempts to use the sling as a makeshift sap of sorts.

This is the best i've got unless we are just going to wait for crits to hit.
This is assuming I am getting the +2 for flanking, also figuring that the sling would do the same damage how I am trying to use it but please feel free to rule it as you want.

Hoping that his companion's efforts will enable them some amount of benefit, Douglas stabbed again at the creature with as much force as he could muster.

Unfortunately, as Douglas stabbed, his foot caught on a rock, which forced the spear to plunge into the ground next to the ant-creature.

Unable to deflect the ant-creature's attack, the enlarged Douglas falls to the ground in a heap, groaning.

Enlarge is actually a net -2 to AC - -1 for size and -1 for dex.

Mr. Douglas is sitting at -2 I believe.

Adoward picks up the now stabilized Douglas and carries him back to the camp and makes sure he is comfortable. Then he goes back and takes the remains of the ant, hoping that he can later make use of it for possibly armor.
Back at the camp Adoward takes care of Douglas until he wakes up.

Adoward goes to collect his thrown sling bullets from the battle grounds.

I remember somewhere in phb saying that its 50/50 if spent ammunition is recoverable or not so i'll roll for the 5 that i actually fired.

You are able to make some emergency healing aids to patch the wound and stop the bleeding. The thick paste comes from plants, but your healing knowledge isn't enough to help your friend heal faster. You are able to keep any possible infection at bay.

Sorry for the delay, was trying to give your duo a chance to post even just a check in. Yeah, count yourself as having 3 healing salves remaining.
Your progress on digging a hole is slow. You don't have any proper tools, but you are still able to excavate a 2' cube hole.

Jthw
2015-05-26, 11:27 PM
Adoward continues working on the hole, waiting for his friend to awaken.

Taking 10 [14] for as long as it takes him to wake up, if it gets dark I will stop digging and keep watch for as long as I can stay up. Also taking reasonable breaks to get a drink/eat.

He heals 1hp every 8 hours. He has a 10% chance of regaining consciousness every hour. If he doesn't roll for it, I'm just going with natural healing. This means in 24hours he'll be at 1hp and revived. Just so you have a time table to work with.

Adoward carefully climbs down the tree, all the while listening for the beasts (or anything for that matter.)

Assuming there is nothing to impede him Adoward moves silently over to Douglas and keeps watch for the rest of the night, or until he wakes up.

Taking 10 on both climb and listen, 13 and 10 respectively. Also taking 10 so 13 on the move silently.

You are able to sit watch the rest of the night uneventfully. You realize that the lack of sleep may eventually hurt you, but you aren't yet feeling any major adverse effects. Douglas still doesn't awaken come the morning, though he does seem to be doing better.
