so i'm in a post end the the world game with a few friends and I selected the smart hero as my class. we are currently level 5 soon to be level six
for talents I selected Savant three times cause i like to craft stuff. what i'd like some advice on is when i reach level 6 should i keep going smart hero or should i go with an advance class. currently by taking 10 on my crafts i can get a score of 35 so i was just curious as to what path i should chose .

What sort of things besides crafting do you want your character to do?

What is their fluff?
What is happening in the campaign?

the fluff is he is genius from Germany who moved around the world making Drugs and other chemicals to use to kill people. he was in maximum security prison were he meant the other pcs. right now there trying to take over a city with drugs weapons and such all of witch is my job to make and repair

i want to be able to hold my own in combat with bombs and splash weapons but be able to craft as good as possible as well

Go field scientist and use chemistry applications on Scientific Improvisation and pick physical sciences for Minor/Major Breakthrough.

It gives some good uses of your int in battle and sounds like it can fit your character pretty well.

What books can you use? What are your stats/feats looking like?

Seconding the motion. From what it seems, the OP should have high Intelligence in order to be a Smart Hero. Future/Futuretech should give it a few nice perks, and Weapons' Locker has an equally nice suite of weapons to play with. The Engineer Adv. Class from d20 Future can craft some really nice stuff, and isn't really THAT future-specific.

That said, to the OP: have you spent points on Demolitions? It's not necessary to use bombs in combat, but it's necessary if you want to use explosives to destroy walls and doors, since it determines the structural damage. Also, IIRC, it's a must for timed/remote explosives. Otherwise, Craft (mechanical) pretty much covers everything, and from what I can see, Craft (electrical) and Craft (chemical) are your other choices.

Field Scientist...well, it's a given, but it's not really surprising. You get Smart Defense and Smart Weapon, which is great for Int specialists, and Skill Mastery will ensure that you get to take 10 on all Craft skills you've spent points on (plus Demolitions, if you choose to get it), but the Minor/Major Breakthroughs are kinda disappointing, IMO. I'd stay 2 levels in Smart hero, though - Plan is just THAT good. Takes a minute of preparation, but you end up granting your allies a relatively easy +3 to attack rolls and skill checks, and you can use for non-combat situations as well.

Assuming you have access to the future books that is a more solid choice. Given d20 modern only I'd dip 4 into Field Scientist... even with the other books a 4 level dip is nice.
