Hey all, I'm designing a Hobgoblin army in 3.P and wanted to make them Roman style Phalanx soldiers. Only issue is that a Phalanx is utterly TERRIBLE in PF.
The back spear wielders will suffer the following penalties:
-2 due to weapon size: using a small sized longspear as medium creatures for spear + shield style
Enemies gain a +4 bonus to AC due to cover from the first rank and because of this the second rank of soldiers cannot make attacks of opportunity against anyone rushing the first rank, negating half the point of using reach weapons in the first place.

Is there any feat that allows a reach weapon to ignore cover provided by creatures?

How about the feat named Phalanx Formation (www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/combat-feats/phalanx-formation-combat)? :smalltongue:

Edit: You might also want to consider the archetype Phalanx Soldier (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/fighter/archetypes/paizo---fighter-archetypes/phalanx-soldier) which with 3 levels in allows you to wield spears as a one handed weapon with shield and no penalties.
