Hi all,

I was debating playing a wizard with a conjurer specialty. But when looking through the spell list, I could not find any Summon Monster spell. And the only summoning spells I could find were for conjuring elementals.

Did I miss something? Is Summon Monster present, but under a different name perhaps? And if not, are Conjurers still a viable PC class (i.e. can stand their ground against other wizard specialties)?

Sadly, summoning was majorly curtailed in 5e. You can't really summon anything at all (besides a familiar) until... 7th level? As far as I can tell, all the summons are under "conjure whatever" now. Besides Gate, of course.

On the other hand, summoning is pretty powerful with bounded accuracy. Summons stay relatively accurate and effective for a wider level range than in previous editions.

And since they also fall under concentration spells for the Conjurations, as a GM you don't have to worry about the party suddenly turning into a party of 24. But that ONE thing you are summoning is more likely to be useful.

Plus it opens back up to that great old story cliche of trying to hit the summoner so he loses control of his large, and now VERY annoyed pet.

EDIT: Unless of course, he is a summoner specialist and they do get a special power to not lose such concentration due to damage.

up until very late levels (when wizards, bards, and sorcerers get wish) druid is probably the strongest summoning class. they get access to it earlier and can summon a larger variety of creatures. they don't get the conjurer specialist's ability to never lose focus, though. still, with investment into constitution, resilient:con, and warcaster, you can have a very low chance of losing spells. alternately, if you're not in a situation where people can attack you, you're not going to lose spells either.

generally speaking, though, conjurers are fine. the base chassis of the wizard class is very strong, and their school specialization abilities are reasonably good.

I read a really good idea on another thread, to re-skin the Spiritual Weapon spell into a summon minor creature spell.

Have it work just the same just with a different thematic feel and you have a low level mook summon.

Edit: don't remember who posted or what thread otherwise I would give credit.

Summoning is great in 5e. Sure it doesn't start until 4th level spells for most casters but it is still fantastic and can include many creatures. As much as 24 as a 9th level spell.

Play a druid, they are the go to summoning class.
