I'm so sure I saw in a book at one point a certain type of undead that rises from people falsely accused of being witches (or similar) and then being burned at the stake. Now I can't find it and it's driving me mad! I thought it was the Cinderspawn but that's another thing entirely. From memory it looks like a perpetually burning black skeleton. At some point in the future I expect to be going up against some fire loving Pelor forces (who burned my Necromancer character alive) and I'd love for some poetic justice in raising up the victims of their so called burning hate.

Hmm. I may have been reading something like the Slayers guide to Undead and conflated a story about occasions when undead may spontaneously arise and the Fire Spectre from Ghostwalk:

In any case all three of these undead beings certainly fit the bill!

This thread which asked the same question should be helpful: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-314854.html

Magma Wraith:
Rising upwards is a creature seemingly composed of lava, its body glowing with a sullen crimson radiance. Roughly humanoid in shape, its face is twisted in grimace of hatred, white-hot eyes glaring and tormented as it flows forward. Tongues of flame leap sporadically from its body, creating arcs of fire that sputter and die, then burst into a shower of sparks.
Magma wraiths are undead creatures, although they do not resemble one upon first sight. The spirits of those who were burned alive and buried in unhallow ground, within the magma wraith's body of lava is a blackened skeleton covered with obsidian shards. The spirit animates the skeleton and the magma, allowing it to move through the earth like a lava flow, leaving destruction in its wake.
A magma wraith stands about as tall as a human, weighting as much as 500 pounds (of lava and minerals). Magma wraiths cannot speak, but they can understand Common (and may be spoken with through spells such as speak with dead).

Effigy (from the article "Birth of the Dead", Dragon #336):
"It is done." Father Benedict turned to face the gathering crowd, most of whom still stared at the gruesome figure tied to the smoldering stake. "She has been purified, cleansed by the divine flame. No longer shall her vile witcheries bedevil our town. We are safe once more."
Benedict laced his fingers and smiled benignly at the townsfolk as they filed from the square. The harlot had been no witch at all, but her sacrifice would buy him time to deal with the real culprit without his people turning on him. His position was secure, and he-
From the charred wood, a skeletal hand thrust forth, wreathed in flame, to wrap dead fingers around Benedict's neck. No, the woman had been no threat to Benedict, no threat to the townsfolk.
Until now.

Like so many undead, effigies form from the hate and rage of a dying individual. Such people must die under circumstances wherein they believe they have been deprived of their rightful due by the actions of others. For example, someone murdered on the verge of completing a major ambition or gaining a windfall might become an effigy. In addition, an effigy can only form if the individual died by fire, such as a fireball or flame strike spell, or a dragon's breath. This factor, far more than any other, explains why ghosts are more common than effigies. Source: Monster Manual II, page 89.

Reminds me of that episode where Groundskeeper Willie got burned alive.

Yes!! That's where I read it! I knew I wasn't mad! Thank you, phew.
