After learning of the horrid secrets behind the Ixenpab Resort, the party has aided the staff in rising up and overthrowing Arnen, the elf who had enslaved them. Vaex, Nyktox, and Taalia have freed the kobold slaves and the majority of the serving staff from their prison-like quarters below the resort proper, while Stark has driven out the cruel patrons of the resort's secret "Hall of Decadence" and taken two of the women, the ifrit maiden Qari and the tiefling warrior Tiana, as his harem travelling companions. With Arnen dead and the slaves free, everyone settles down to a much-needed night of sleep.

Morning is accompanied by the exquisite smell of cooking wafting through the air, brought in by the now-open service tunnels. As the newly-freed women and kobolds begin to stir, there is a solid pounding on the barricaded front door of the resort, which jolts Nyktox and Vaex from their slumber. Taalia is soon woken up by one of the former slaves who barges into her room to tell her that a small platoon of the Sky-Guard is just outside, and she heads to Stark's room to tell him... only to find the young man practically buried under Qari and Tiana.

The pounding at the front door has Vaex fully alert in an instant. All the weariness of the previous night is gone. He draws his rapier and moves up to the door. Vaex looks back at Nyktox, making sure that the brassblood is ready for trouble before opening the entrance.

Stark rises as Taalia opens the door, rubbing his eyes as he gently rises from the queen-sized bed with two other full-grown women taking up as much space as they can. He softly peels Tiana's hands off his arm and rests Qari's head on a pillow, standing up and picking up his spellbook from the table, opening it and reading, mentally preparing himself for the day as he walks over to Taalia. Without looking up from the book, he asks, "I assume you have a reason to barge into my room without knocking?"

Nyktox yawns as he gets up, ready to attack whoever comes through if need be.

As Vaex opens the door, he finds himself face-to-face with the same captain as before, and almost two dozen wyvarans behind him hefting greatclubs and greatswords. "Oh, fancy seeing you here again, greenblood. From the fact that your weapon is drawn, I assume you have an idea of what brings us here?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Taalia stares at the two females on the bed for a moment before turning to Stark. "The Sky-Guard is out front, and from the look of things they heard about what happened from one of the guests and not one of the slaves. We need to clear everything up with them before things turn bad."
Stark looks over at Tiana. Technically speaking, she's the one who murdered Arnen, but she did so only because Stark allowed and told her to. He would take responsibility for her actions. He turns to Taalia and nods.
Stark heads downstairs and sees the open door and the sky-captain from before. He chuckles to himself and approaches the group, standing next to Vaex.
Glad to see that at least it is a familiar face, Vaex sheathes his weapon before responding.
"I am glad to see you, captain. I was going to send a runner out to the local garrison this morning. We have a lot of kobolds and female warmbloods in bad shape. We arrived here yesterday, intending on having a little while to relax before continuing on to Wyrmskull Crater. It was discovered, however, that there was an underground slave trade going on here. Dozens of kobolds were put into forced labor, forced to crawl through hidden tunnels like rats to avoid offending the 'real' guests. Female warmbloods were also kept in poor conditions for the purposes of torture and forced mating. Any dissenters were silenced by death in a gladiatorial arena, which we have still not fully investigated.
We have managed to free all of the slaves, and are currently keeping several guards in custody in the lower level cells. I'm sure that they have their own contributions to speak of in terms of the operation of this place."
The captain listens patiently, before turning and motioning for a few of the wyvarans to enter. He steps in before them, putting himself between the guards and Vaex. "Where is this arena? And do you have the owner of this establishment in custody?"
Seeing Stark and Taalia he motions for them to come over as well. "I must say, I find these accusations more than a little suspicious. First the encounter with the lot of you yesterday, and now you are saying that Arnen, someone who has given the Sky-Guard no reason to suspect him of any wrongdoing since before I hatched, is a slave-owner and operating an illegal business behind closed doors at this resort? Forgive me for implying that you are lying, but we must investigate the situation ourselves before deciding on the correct course of action."
He looks around, before motioning to the empty halls. "Where are the imprisoned guards and the staff? They will need to be questioned as well."
Stark bows politely. "I think you'll find I have the correct documentation to support my claims at this time, Captain," he replies, producing the letters of correspondence between Arnen and the Black Initiates. He hands them to the man. "As you can see, the man was convinced by a sinister group to add a hall of gambling, drugs, arena fighting and pleasure to his resort, and then later even called upon to sacrifice some of his slaves, which he thankfully refused vehemently."
"Hmm..." He examines the journal entries that Stark had marked, but pauses when he begins examining the letters. "I can't read these, but one of our mages should be able to." He holds out a hand to his side, and one of the wyvarans hands him a pair of large leather envelopes. He puts the journal in one and the letters in the other, tucking them both under his arm. "Now... can any of you direct me and my men to this hall?"
Stark nods and leads the men to the Hall of Decadence, where he shows them Arnen's corpse, as well as Tyvohra's. "She took her own life after he passed. Apparently she loved him, according to the others," he explains. "As for Arnen, I killed him. He was a monster who perpetuated torture and violence towards involuntary employees and caged kobolds."
The captain nods slowly and scratches his chin. "We'll need to bring in one of our investigators to commune with the dead, find out what he was trying to do." He examines the bodies with a frown. "...You tore Arnen's head clean off?"
2015-04-03, 09:26 PM
Stark frowns. Lying here would only get him in trouble, since they were apparently going to communicate with the dead. The part about Tyvohra was mostly accurate, as he had only given her the knife and her last rites after she had done the deed. However, Arnen would easily be able to identify his killer.
"No. I did not. I infiltrated the Hall, disguised as a lord, observed everything, and tricked Arnen into giving me control of his prized gladiator. Then I freed her from that control and she took his head off after I lured him to her. So, as you can see, I'm the one who is responsible for his death, but she is the person who ended his life."
"I see... And I take it you would be willing to submit to a zone of truth to confirm that?" The look on his face suggests that he doesn't enjoy these procedures, but carries them out as part of the job. "What about this gladiator of Arnen's? Is she still present and able to testify to what happened?"
NeoSeraphi
2015-04-03, 09:32 PM
Stark nods. "I will submit to whatever magical or mundane verification processes you need to verify this is the truth, because it is the truth. Of course, your speak with dead spell will verify it as well, so that's two instances of magical confirmation, which should be enough with my testimony to determine what happened. The gladiator is indeed present, but she is in my custody after the incident. I believe she is currently still recovering from the trauma of what has happened to her for the last unknown number of years, and I will thank you to not disturb her right now. She's still getting used to the idea of freedom, I don't want her to be around any other unfamiliar men."
The captain thinks for a moment before nodding. "If she is in a state that would drive her to do something like this, with her bare hands from the look of it, then I doubt she can handle the sort of questioning that we would have. Even if she were, depending on the state she's in her testimony might not even be admissible."
After a brief look around the room, he nods again. "I think I've seen enough to be sure that this place deserves to be shut down for good, though we will still have to follow procedure just to be safe. We will see to it that the slaves are dealt with accordingly. Brought back to family, taken to receive any necessary treatment, that sort of thing."
As hardened as the captain looks, the look in his eye suggests that what he's witnessed here goes beyond what he's ever encountered
Stark bows politely. "I regret getting off on the wrong foot with you before, Captain, but I assure you that my words this time are completely true, and I am most grateful to you for being understanding about the girl's mental state. She and another former slave have no family that they know of, so I will be taking care of them personally. Now, is there anything else I can do to aid your investigation? If not, I will leave your men to search the place."
He takes the keys that he lifted off Arnen and hands them to the Sky-Captain so that he has access to every room.
Vaex lets Stark do most of the talking. He is surprised and pleased to see Stark not only telling the truth, but also cooperating with the captain. Before Stark can leave, however, Vaex grabs his sleeve to stop him.
"Stark, wait! There's something that I have been meaning to ask you. You said that there was an arena. Where is it? Where did they keep the gladiators? Are there still any down there?"
"I'm interested in seeing this arena as well. If Arnen was keeping slaves here, I wouldn't put it past him to be keeping dangerous beasts for the arena. Aside from showing me the way there and remaining until we've finished our investigation, I believe the Sky-Guard can handle things from here."
Stark escorts the group to the gladiatoral arena, then leaves them there so that they can continue their investigation. He puts his spellbook back in front of his face and walks out into the lobby, still reading. He lowers the book once he gets out there and looks at Taalia. "How are you holding up? You're no stranger to conflict, but still, this kind of stuff would affect anyone. Do you want to talk about it?"
Taalia shakes her head. "It's sickening. For some reason I thought it would be similar to the sort of thing that the followers of the Corpse King do to the dead, but..." She rubs her arms and shivers. "It's a lot different than I thought it would be."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Between the buttons in the viewing room and the mechanisms that the group investigates in the far side of the arena, Vaex is able to piece together how the device works. Each button is attuned to a device in one of the holding cells, and when a button is pressed the corresponding device is activated, opening a cage and the door leading into the arena; a wall of force is then used to force the creatures out into the arena, where the doors close behind them.

The buttons match up to various creatures: aberrations, magical beasts, humanoids and monstrous humanoids, animals... and dragons.

"Captain!" Vaex calls out for attention. "I've managed to puzzle out how the device works. These buttons are keyed to different types. By the Ten Colors, they have dragonkin locked up down here! With your permission, I would like to release the obviously intelligent prisoners first." Vaex has no idea of the mental state these gladiators are in. If the tiefling was any indication, they could be quite bloodthirsty after years of mistreatment. Really wish that I had had the presence of mind to bring my crossbow...

She nods and looks over at him. "Should we take Tiana and Qari out as well? They could probably do with some fresh air too."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The captain growls and clenches his fist at the sight of the dragonkin emblems. "As much as I want to free the dragons now... it's not a good idea. I've dealt with captive dragons before, even the more agreeable types tend to get violent. The less friendly ones... I hate to say it, but sometimes they have to be put down so they don't become a danger to innocent people." He looks over to Vaex and Nyktox. "Let's head down into the pens and see what there is first. If there are any dragons left, let's try to talk them down from attacking us before we let them out."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Rah'zhan." The trio heads down into the arena, crossing over to the large doorway leading into the dragon pens. Unlike what they had expected, only one cage was occupied, and at first it doesn't appear to be a dragon at all, but a gold-scaled serpent with a ridge running down its back and a crown of horns growing from its head.

The dragon is currently curled up in its cage, with its head hidden within its coils.

Taalia seems surprised by Stark waiting down here for the women, but she still looks a little skeptical.

After a few minutes, Qari comes sprinting down the stairs and promptly puts Stark between herself and the stairs. Tiana comes down, with her hair brushed and tied back and wearing (or, rather, forced into) a blouse and skirt, and the tiefling is directing a stream of curses that are vile even by the standards of the Abyssal language. "I-I just got her some proper clothes and fixed her hair, I didn't think it would make her this angry!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The dragon watches as Vaex picks the lock on the door, remaining there for a moment as it swings open. It hesitantly steps out of the cage and turns its gaze on Vaex. "Can you remove this collar from my neck? It restricts my movement and power, the only reason I haven't already fled this place." The dragon stretches its neck out, revealing a wide metal collar inscribed with numerous runes and symbols.
The collar appears to have no effects that would prevent someone else from removing it, though it does have something in place to wound the dragon if it tries to force the collar off. Tell me, what is your name?"
Tiana blinks as she touches Stark's hand, and her eyes seem to lose focus for a moment. (Abyssal) "Yes, I'm... ready." The words come out a little slowly, as if she is taking a moment to process what she's saying before actually speaking. She's a little calmer now, though she still casts unfriendly looks over at Qari.
She should be able to speak both Abyssal and Common much more easily now, though I'm sure she will still voluntarily refrain from communicating in Common."
He glances back at Tiana. "How about it? Are you feeling better now? I want you to really enjoy the outside, hopefully even though the effects of this spell are temporary they will enhance your ability to remember even after the spell has expired."
(Abyssal) "It's been... years, since I saw the sun. I forgot how pretty it was in the morning."
Taalia and Qari both frown. "I still can't understand a word she's saying..."
Tiana bows her head a little. (Abyssal) "I'm sorry. I can understand Common, but I never learned to speak it. Or... maybe I did, but don't remember how."
"Yes, the very same. He may not be a true dragon, but the dragonblood flows strong in him, and his council is something that I should have remembered before returning home. He warned that I should not trust any elf I meet on the way back, but I did not think Arnen posed any sort of threat."
Qari shakes her head. "I have no preference either, Master. Arnen very rarely allowed me outside of the resort, and I'm afraid I don't recall much of the surrounding area."
Qari sits down beside Stark, looking at his spellbook. "Do you keep a journal like Arnen did, Master?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The other cages in the arena hold little of note. Most of them are either wild beasts or mindless undead, and most of the handful of humanoids are either insane from being imprisoned for so long or weak from malnutrition. Rah'zhan quickly has the sane prisoners brought up for treatment, while the others are left alone for the time being. "There may be a way to help them, but I'll not risk it until we know for sure. I will have them looked after in the meantime, though, and the wild beasts released or put down as needed."

The slaves have been corralled in the courtyard and lobby by the wyvarans, where their health is being assessed and they are being asked about any personal information to help them get home, and the guards that had been captured in the revolt are shackled and being questioned by some of the Sky-Guard.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I see. I apologize for the misunderstanding, Master, I rarely had much chance to mingle with spellcasters while performing my duties at the resort. Or at least those who openly practiced the art." Stark takes some time to reflect, and after all is said and done, he closes his book and smiles. "Right! Let's play a game! Something that we can use to get to know everyone better...hmm, okay, how about Truth or Dare?" he suggests with a grin. "Here's how it works. Say it's my turn, I would ask someone in the group 'Truth or Dare?' and that person would choose. If they choose Truth, I ask them a personal or embarrassing question and they have to answer it honestly. If they choose Dare, I give them a funny or embarrassing task to complete that they have to complete and then it's the person on my left's turn. What do you think? Sound fun?"
Being somewhere else when he first open his eyes and takes his first breath... It just doesn't feel right. "Please don't call me that... Um... Truth, I guess."
He smiles warmly at her and then picks up the discarded blouse, folds it, and places it in one of his bags. "(Abyssal) You seemed upset at the river today. Withdrawn, and nervous. If anyone comes anywhere near you with that intent, I'll roast them to a crisp." He strokes her hair softly and lets her go, standing up.
"Qari, I'm going to go make sure that the preparations are going smoothly. Can you take care of loading the bags into the cart?" He smiles when she answers and says, "Good girl."
If Arnen's suppliers are willing to keep doing business with us, it should lower the price a bit, but we won't know for sure until we've had a chance to meet with them."
Taalia thinks for a moment. "He might ask for a few changes to be made, but my uncle Khamer may be interested in sponsoring the resort. He's a member of the Veiled Tundra's royal family, so that kind of sponsorship might help get business going a bit faster." She notes the worried looks on their faces at the mention of Khamer. Forseti nods as Nyktox climbs into his normal seat and Taalia joins Stark and the other girls in the back. After a quick headcount to make sure everyone is aboard, Nyktox gets the wagon going, and they are waved through by the guards posted at the entrance to the next tunnel. There is little to accost the group as they proceed toward their destination. None of the passing travelers pay them much mind aside from exchanging friendly greetings, and the few wild creatures that show any aggression toward them are weak enough to be dispatched easily or docile enough that they back down once the group passes by.
After a couple days of travel, the road lets out once more into open air, but this time they exit out into a massive crater. The scorched black rock is pockmarked here and there with faintly glowing steam vents or blooming plants, and in the distance perhaps an hour away lies a massive city of volcanic rock. In the middle of the city lies a pair of obsidian spires, which from this angle resemble a dragon's head emitting smoke into the sky.
The temperature continues to increase as they descend deeper, until the ramp finally levels out. Another set of guards waits in front of an ornate door of adamantine. The guards all ready their weapons. (Draconic) "Who are these warmbloods? Why have you brought-"
A voice echoes through the hall, cutting off the guard who had spoken up and making Nyktox and the girls jump. "Si tepoha lasaua astahi. Shala astahi ekess dolruth."
I have summoned them. Allow them to pass.
The guards look at each other before stepping back, and two of them pull open the door that they were guarding.
As the doors swing open, the room beyond can be seen. An obsidian and marble walkway leads from the door to a raised dais, and each side of the walkway is lined with statues of dragons; the statues on the left each depict a metallic dragon, and the statues on the right representing the chromatic dragons. Each statue is wrought from metal or gemstones, with the metal or gem color perfectly matching the dragon depicted by the statue, and the statues are so realistic that they could just as easily be living dragons frozen in time.
Approaching on the walkway is an old and frail-looking kobold, garbed in a silk robe trimmed to resemble dragon scales and holding a bone staff topped with an hourglass; the hourglass is fashioned in the form of two entwined dragons, one chromatic and one metallic. The most prominent oddity of the kobold is his skin and physical features, which seem to constantly shift between those of the chromatic and metallic dragons.
"It is an honor to meet each of you as well. I am Unahzaaljun, though you may call me by another name or simply 'Elder' if you prefer." He steps aside and motions with his free hand for them to enter the hall. "Please, come this way. There is much for us to discuss, and I'm sure you all wish to relax for a bit after coming so far."
Forseti timidly peeks out of the backpack and climbs up onto the greenblood's shoulder.
The Elder leads them into the hall and to the dais. Atop it is a lounge area, piled with colorful cushions and with a low table laden with fresh food and drink. "Please, make yourselves comfortable. We'll take some time to get acquainted before getting down to business."
Vaex isn't entirely comfortable with just sitting down and relaxing. The matter of the towers could not really wait. But he was in the Elder's domain, and so must respect his wishes.
You in particular are connected to the Tower outside of this city, as is the power bonded to your body and soul."
The voice in Stark's head was getting louder. His birthmark was searing his flesh right now. He grips his head as he starts to laugh to himself.
"DOWN here comes the SOUND
Everyone POUND
You're free to this phenomenon"
"Consume me? Hah...that's fine..." the young man whispers, his hands igniting on their own and starting to burn at his face.
"NOW let's make it LOUD
And we'll show 'em all HOW
We move to this phenomenon!"
"After all, even if my power destroys me, at least I will live on in everyone's memories. Especially...her..."
"WHOA open your SOUL
Now you'll lose CONTROL
Inside of this phenomenon!
JUST let yourself GO
and let everyone KNOW
You move to this phenomenon!"
The voice was screaming in his head now. Stark manages to pull away his right hand from his face and douse it, then he grabs the gloved hand off his left face and slams it into the table.
The glove stops glowing. Stark's eyes return to their normal color. He pants for a moment, then sits down. "I don't know what this mark means. If going to the tower means I have a chance to learn what it truly is, I'm there."
I have even seen what will happen should an attempt be made to stop any of you from going to the Tower; your tiefling friend knocks my doors off their hinges, and young Forseti somehow chews his way through an adamantine cage to follow Vaex."
He fixes his gaze on Stark, though his eyes have not opened once during the time they have been here. "I advise you to temper your emotions, Stark. Impulse and brashness may have gotten you this far, but each time you let your passions control you, you allow Cinderhulk to gain a surer foothold on being able to overcome your will. In time, he will take control of you completely, and even if it is for only a brief moment that will be enough for him to cause great harm to those close to you."
His cheerful mood diminishes a bit. "I know not what you will face inside, but I can at least provide you with some assistance against whatever you may encounter." He raises his staff, and what looks like glowing sand emerged from the hourglass before swirling around the party. The sand compresses against them all before vanishing.
The Elder waves to them as they depart, and the guards who had escorted them inside escort them back up the ramp and out the opposite end of the spire from the one they'd originally entered through. Outside is a cobblestone trail, which leads into a narrow crevice that leads up to the Tower.
The walk to the Tower talks maybe half an hour, and when they arrive they are met by a pair of massive metal doors. They match the ones that Vaex had encountered at the Tower near Khamer's estate, save for the motif on their surface: rather than a dragon's face, the doors depict a mural of black flames, with fire opals set to resemble pairs of eyes leering angrily down at them. At the place where the two doors meet, there is a latch in the shape of a flame crafted from polished ruby, with an obsidian plate in the shape of a left handprint.
Very well, "Volcano". If you want to get into the tower so badly, let me help you! The pain reaches its peak, and the dark flames even begin to sear Stark's hand as the doors glow red-hot. Slowly, they begin to warp and buckle, gradually parting enough to allow the party through. The motif of the door is destroyed, and the metal barrier that had prevented their passage looked as if it had been melted away. Stark frowns. "Look, it's just...when I took my Harrowing, I learned something about myself. I didn't give in to the temptations the demon offered, but not because I wasn't tempted. It was because the power he offered me wasn't enough. I don't know why, but my dreams and my thoughts are haunted, sometimes even obsessed, with power. I crave power. I need it. That's why I started to study magic. People like me, with magic in their blood, can usually just manifest it without effort. That wasn't enough for me. I wanted more. I rejected the magic in my blood and learned how to use it from a book like normal people. And now...whatever is in my past is catching up with me, I guess. I have no idea what the Elder means, saying that I am connected to Cinderhulk, but I think this tower will hold the secrets I've been looking for."
Sighing and rubbing his shoulder, he continues. "As for the outburst, well, I admit it's never been that bad before. Sometimes, when my birthmark really burns I start to...well...lose control. I hear a voice in my mind, and that voice sings loudly. The lyrics are unnerving, and entrancing at the same time. And I start to feel shifts in my personality. But it's all temporary, I mean, I'm perfectly in control right now."
