You never saw who slipped this harrow card onto your person. Whoever had done it was beyond slick. Maybe you found it when you opened up your purse nestled in among your small pile of gold which was all still accounted for, maybe you found it when you took off your boot after a long night's work slipped into your sock. However you found it and you you felt the need to go. Not only did you want to gain the information to strike out at Lamm. maybe you were angry that somebody was able to bypass your usually well honed defense against pickpockets, maybe that was what intrigued you. No matter your feeling on the summons you found yourself going deep into Old Korvasa to 3 Lancet street.

Upon entering you find the cozy chamber within this small home is filled with a fragrant haze of flowers and strong spice. The haze comes from several sticks of incense smouldering in wall-mounted burners that look like butterfly-winged elves. The smoke itself seems to soften edges and gives the room a dream-like feel. The walls are draped with brocaded tapestries, one showing a black-skulled beast juggling men’s hearts, another showing a pair of angels
dancing atop a snow-blasted mountain. A third tapestry on the far wall depicts a tall hooded figure shrouded in mist, a flaming sword held in a skeletal
hand. Several brightly-colored rugs cover the floor, but the room’s only furnishings are a wooden table covered by a bright red throwcloth and several elegant tall-backed chairs. A basket covered by blue cloth sits under the table.
The first PC to arrive at Zellara’s home finds a simple note on the table, weighed down with a stone paperweight.

Those who eat the bread or drink the wine will find them to be both a little stale and not of the greatest vintage but filling and not befouled in any way.

Hock was the first to arrive at the house. He gave the insides of the house a quick glance though he didnt pay much attention to it, seemed like a normal house to him.

Hock found the note, read its contents with great difficulty and turned his gaze upon the food. Hock was many things but picky was not one of them and food.. who doesnt like food? Hock helped himself to the food, he didnt care... he was hungry.

Braaga arrived there late in the afternoon. The woman in his dreams had told him about a great opportunity that will rise in the following days. He didn't know if that was it, but he really hoped that it could be his chance to salvation. His life had not been the same since that foul and fortunate at the same time day, when he managed to escape. However he never told anyone about it and that fact alone, enhanced his thoughts of this being his opportunity.

He enters the house and finds a big muscular man eating and drinking. He seemed familiar but he wasn't sure if he had seen him before.

So this is him? This is the writer of that note. But how did he pass me that? He is too big to go unnoticed!

His thoughts filled his mind as the eyes of the two Half-Orcs met. Braaga seemed lost but his mask covered any expression.

Hi there! I guess you don't need my name since you knew how to find me. However may I have yours?

Hock shook is head with a mouthful of food so big that his cheeks buldged before violently forcing it down his throat. "No, Hock na' send note. Hock follow note." Hock said, looking a bit confused as he stared at the other half-orc before reaching in his belt pouch and pulled out a very rough and crumbled version of the note. "Spend long time but Hock read it! Na' ask anyone ta help read!"

Hock got out of his chair, quite a massive creature, really... even for a half-orc. He grinned and offered a pan sized hand to the other with a toothy grin. "Me name Hock!"

As he walked down Lancet Street, Gahariet kept looking at the Harrow card, over and over again, his mind in turmoil.

At first, he had dismissed the appearance of the card, believing it to be another random scrap of paper not unlike the many that periodically materialized and bopped him on the head. Then, his eye drawn by the design, he had picked it up and examined it in more detail. One quick request to go out for the day to Alka later, and he'd been off, gripping the shaft of his quarterstaff tightly.

Lamm. That was a name he had not heard in some time. Not since the day some of his men had beaten him half to death for the paltry amount of coin he'd had on his person. Not since the day Alka had found him.

Not since the day he'd found out what the true meaning of his curse, and his blessings, were.

Tentatively opening the door, Gahariet walked in to find two half-orcs in mid-conversation. One was built like a stone wall, the other thin and wearing a mask that hid his features. Clearing his throat, Gahariet spoke.

"Erm... pardon my asking, but did you two happen to get a Harrow card with a note on it as well?"

Lamm. A name he has been hunting for. A mysterious clue seems all to easy. Most likely a trap. As Wim makes his way to the address he steels himself for the inevitable fight that is about to follow. Rolling his shoulders and loosening up as he walks to what he expects to be both an ambush and gods willing his death and the one who murdered his beloved.

Pushing the door open with the certainty of a man walking into his death. The masked creature is the first to draw his attention What a ghastly assassin. Shouldn't they blend into a crowd? An odd group. So what are we waiting on?

Hello, my name is Braaga. It seems like our guest is late. Or maybe it was just a prank after all...

Seeing that the other Half-Orc did not take his hand, hock grunted before looking at the other two.

Letter on table says we eat an' wait. Hock eat an' wait. You join Hock.

With that being said, the Half-Orc sat back down while gesturing for the others to join him with his massive hand and setting his note on the table next to his ale.

Hock gonna cut Lamm up good. Hock gonna chop 'im up like por'chops... Ya.

As Hock motioned for everyone to sit down, Gahariet joined them at the table, nodding by way of greeting. "The name's Gahariet. Pleasure to meet you all."

At Hock's rather... forward statement of intent, Gahariet could not help but be taken aback. What would cause such vehemence? "What did Lamm do to you?"

"He took my nephew." A half-elven woman stands in the doorway, clad in dark brown studded leather armor. Long black hair tumbles down her back unbound, and her vividly blue eyes are grim. She holds up a Harrow card; the Big Sky, displaying two slaves breaking their chains. "I assume you are all here for the same reason I am. Call me Gianna." Using her real name is a bit of a risk, but 'Gianna' is a fairly common name in Korvosa. "Do any of you know who might be responsible for this... meeting?"

I'd like to know that myself. It seems we may have a common enemy. I came here suspecting an ambush. So you'll excuse me if I pass on the food and drink. What better way to remove enemies then poison.
Wim continues to survey the environment cetainly that something more sinister lays in wait.
Hock is it? It seems you and I may have a bit of competition when it comes to ending Mr. Lamm.
Walking the length of the room before finally settling with his back to a wall and as advantageous a view of the rest of the room as possible.

Apologies. It's been... People call me Wim.

As the awkwardness of new conversation leaves as well as the belief that armed men will come bursting in begins to ease the door opens and a small attractive Varisian woman in middle age walks into the room.

Thank you all for coming to my home. My name is Zellara and it is a pleasure to finally be able to speak with each of you. Please let us all be seated

With that she sits down at the table and produces a deck of Harrow cards and begins idly shuffling them. Those of you who are trained in slight of hand recognize that she is exceptionally skilled in manipulating the cards as they dance and spin across the table she is probably a fortune teller a very common occupation in Korvasa. All the well practiced tricks of bedazzlement and card play meant to add to her mystique and supposed otherworldly knowledge.

Everybody not trained just sees that she is very skilled with the cards. After everybody sits or makes it clear that they will not be seated she begins talking about why she brought you all here.

“Thank you for coming, my friends, and for putting up with my unconventional method of contacting you. I have reason to remain hidden, you see—a terrible man would see great harm done to me if he knew I was reaching out for help. This is a man you know, for he has done something terrible to each of you as well. I speak, of course, of Gaedren Lamm, a man whose cruelty and capacity to destroy the lives of those he touches are matched only by his gift for avoiding reprisal. You see, a year ago, his thieves stole this, my Harrow deck, from me. It is important to me, an heirloom passed down through a dozen generations, and also my sole means of support. When pickpockets stole it, my son, Eran, tracked them down. The thieves were in the employ of Gaedren Lamm, and in reward for finding them, Gaedren murdered my son.
“I sought help from the Guard, but they turned me away. And so I asked around. I paid bribes. I consulted my Harrow deck for advice. And recently, I was rewarded—I found out where Gaedren dwells. He can be found in an old fishery north of here at Westpier 17, where he trains his abducted children to be pickpockets and counts his stolen treasures.
“And now, I need your help. I cannot hope to face this man on my own, and the Guard moves so slowly that if I were to go to them, Gaedren would certainly know of their coming well in advance. Even if they did arrest him—what guarantee would I have he would be punished? This criminal has evaded the law for decades. But you know of these frustrations as well, for word on the street has it that Gaedren has wronged each of you, too. So there we are. It is time for him to pay.”

Hock grunted and pointed to the jagged scar across his throat.

Hock used ta work fer 'im when Hock was Lil'. Lamm cut Hock's throat an' leave Hock ta die. Hock gonna chop 'is head off!

The Half-Orc slammed a fist down on the table then offered a big fang-filled grin at the others before noticing the new woman come in. He turned his attention to her and when she finished her tale, he said..

Tell Hock where ta go. Hock smash! Hock chop! Hock set 'is hideou' on fire!

Gahariet stared at Hock and Gianna as they each revealed their reasons for wanting Lamm dead, and at Wim as he echoed Hock's sentiments. For a moment, his omnipresent kind face was almost turned to one of shock as his composure gradually dwindled, but he managed to regain it - though close observation would reveal it to be a tad forced.

It was at this juncture that Zellara made herself known, and Gahariet kept an open ear as she shared her own tribulations. Reaching out a hand, Gahariet offered her a small smile - but it was laced with eyes of steel.

"I can't imagine what it must have been like for you. For all of you." Gahariet turned to the others. "I'll admit my run-in with Lamm was rather paltry by comparison. But, there's one thing to be glad about here, I reckon. We're all here now, and if he's as slippery as you say..." Gahariet emphatically nodded. "You have my staff and my spells, such as they are."

Gahariet turned back to Zellara. "Anything you can tell us about his hideout? I'd rather not go in there blind."

Braaga stood quietly as he heard the others talking, sharing their experiences with Lamm and how they have affected their lives. His facial scars started to pain a little bit more, his depressed anger coming back to the surface for his early years. He has matured and his scars matured with him.
You seem like someone who has serious reasons to have his revenge on that scum.
He breaks his silence, his mask facing Zellara and his black eyes glowing weirdly from beneath it.
I take it that you will come with us to his hideout then?

Hmph The laugh almost slips out of Wim's mouth before a smile spreads across his face. They are all idiots! This is all to easy and convenient. Surely we are going to die.
A tragic story to be sure but how can we trust you? You say your son is dead, and for that whats left of my heart goes out to you, and your Harrow Deck stolen. Yet here you have your harrow deck in hand. You claim its your sole means of support yet you live much better than any harrower I have ever seen. You send us to our likely deaths so be straight with me, What is your angle? And don't tell me you don't have one. This is Korvosa everyone has one.
Wim's eyes stay locked on this "fortune teller" as he awaits his answer.

Zellara answers the questions in turn.

"Unfortunately no I don't have any more information about the goings on in the fishery. My inquiries have only led me to the door not beyond. And I will not be able to accompany you into the fishery I believe I would only be a hindrance to you because I would be unable to defend myself. However I could provide you with a small boon. A Harrow reading free of charge of course which may forewarn you of dangers within and how best to avoid them. I'm afraid I can provide no more than that.

Turning to Mono she says

I have no reason to want you dead and every reason to want to see you succeed in killing Lamm. With Lamm dead my son will be avenged and my family heirloom will be restored to me. All I ask is that you return my Harrow deck to me anything else you find in Lamm's hideout is your's to take as well as vengence against Lamm for your own reasons.

By now, Gianna and her friends are desperate. Who knows what might be happening to little Paolo? Desperate enough to take this woman's offer, shady as it might be. And there's a simple enough reason as to why this harrower has a deck yet says she lost hers. Varisian fortune-tellers set great store by their decks, often passing them down through generations. Doubtless the one she is holding is a new one; not as good as the deck she got from her grandmother or whoever, but good enough to get the job done while she's looking for the old deck.

"I accept, both the job and the Harrow reading." She looks around at the other people gathered. "Perhaps we should tell one another about our skills. I am a trap and stealth specialist. Please don't go knocking down doors or trying to break chests open until I've had a chance to look for traps and try my tools." Gianna pats the hilt of her rapier. "I also know how to hold my own in a fight."

A Reading? You actually put stock in this rubbish? Fine so be it. As for my skills? Ive got a keen eye, a light foot and I am about as skilled with this blade as that one, nodding his head in Hock's direction, is enthusiastic about... everything it seems.

Oftentimes, when to diametrically opposed personalities clash, the result is as acid or base, or matter and antimatter. So one would have expected it to be with Gahariet, the eternal irrepressible optimist, with Wim.

However, having been already taken aback by the sudden events of the morning and the earlier reactions of the others, and steeled by his commitment to helping the others, Gahariet just turned and smiled at Wim.

"Come now! It's not very nice to insult someone's profession, or their motives, especially when they've gone out of their way to be a decent host. Besides, if it was a trap, I'm sure it would have been sprung by now." Turning to Zellara and the rest of the group, he spoke. "I would also appreciate getting a Harrow reading. Anyways, I'm... I work at the local shrine to Desna. I'm not so great at being light on my feet, or out on the front lines of combat. But I know several useful spells, as I stated earlier - and I know how to talk to people. If you need to have someone talked down, healed, or disabled-" Gahariet held up his hand, showing a brief shimmer of fabulous color within, "I'm your man."

What do you mean you cannot defend yourself? You have magical powers right? Otherwise how can we know that your readings are accurate and not some rambling of a woman who lost her son and got crazy afterwards? This thing seems more and more like a trap from Lamm. He wouldn't risk trying to trap us here, in an unknown environment. He is the type of bastard who likes to have control over everything.

To the others:

I possess magical powers for healing and protection and I can also cause trouble to my enemy's mind. I am not a fighter neither melee nor ranged and I suck at traps. However I have extreme senses of hearing, sight and smelling. I can tell if someone is around us just by his scent, as well as follow someone.

altona
2015-04-06, 11:48 AM
Finally someone with a bit of sense in their head!

To be fair I didn't insult her, I mocked the supposed power of a reading. If she is comfortable taking money from people just by flipping cards and pretending they mean something, good for her. Her profession ranks right up there with professional card players. Let us be honest, which is likely to put Lamm in the ground? A harrow card or a blade?

Lord Of Mantas
2015-04-06, 01:08 PM
Gahariet remained silent for a moment, but then replied. "The blade may be quicker, but I was always told you shouldn't just dismiss other ideas out of hand. Or, as they put it, 'never underestimate the power of lateral thinking.' In any case, it can't possibly hurt us, regardless of whether it's true or not. And really, in a world where the gods themselves grant man power and adventurers go around slinging arcane energies like a child's toy, who's to say they don't have a little power?"

Zellera gives the deck one last shuffle before taking 5 cards off the top

The first step of a harrowing is the choosing. Each of you will choose your fate for that is not something that can ever be decided for you.

Hock draws first revealing the Avalanche.

An apt description of you I believe. When all around you seem to have lost their way it will need to be you who plows forward.

Gianna draws next revealing the Rabbit Prince.

The Rabbit Prince places speed above all else. Swiftness is a powerful gift to have but wise men remember that not every tool is called for in every situation

Wim draws the Juggler

The Juggler speaks the truth especially to those who don't want to hear it. Never turn to the easy lie over a hard truth

Gahariet draws the peacock.

A surprisingly on the nose card after your display. But the peacock is sure in what it is while the others lose their purpose.

Bragaa draws the final card the Cricket

The Cricket is a wanderer and a free spirit. While some see high walls and armed guards and a haven the cricket always remembers that can also describe a prison.

Collecting the cards back into the deck she deals the cards 3 by three in front of her before revealing the left most three one at a time. Revealing the Fiend, The Tyrant and the Cricket

Beginning with the past because we must learn about ourselves before we can hope to progress. We draw the Fiend and the Tyrant which represent salvation from calamity and a parental figure bringing pain while the Cricket in the Evil position meaning that one of you was brought here by a journey that has gone poorly.

Next she begins flipping the middle row revealing the Sankebit, the Dance and the Theater

Next we have the present to show us what we have not been able to see till now. The Snakebite means that there is some discovery that you are overlooking. The Dance usually speaks of Harmony but right now it is mis-aligned and speaks only of discord and Chaos running rampant while the Theater in this position foretells of a momentous happening. It speaks of somebody receiving everything they have dreamed of and being destroyed utterly by it.

Finally she flips the final row revealing the Trumpet, the Uprising and the Paladin.

The Trumpet is a declaration of power for you all. For even though you don't have the power to change the plans you will be able to shape the outcome. The Uprising is a true match meaning that in the near future there will be an overwhelming groundswell that will cause a great deal of damage before it abates. and finally the Paladin tells of people attempting to stand fast in the face of adversity and it being their destruction. With that the Harrowing is concluded. The cards have spoken and you only need listen and allow them to guide your way.

After the Harrow reading Zellara asks politely for you to leave it has been a trying day for her and she will be retiring early. Those of you who wish to contact your people find out that the information she provided is good that Lamm is indeed hiding out in the old Fishery along with his "Little Lambs" they seem to be running some kind of business providing fish slurry to farmers for fertilizer, to fishermen as chum and bait and to taverns as a kind of appalling stew.

[When you hit the fishery there is very little that can stand in your way. As a group you strike down a human alchemist and a sadistic gnome, the little lambs scattering as their tormentors fall, however the young Paolo is not among those that run off before making your way to the lower level of the fishery dropping down a hole onto the under pier and making your way into Lamm's lair.

The air in this large room is somewhat chilly and stinks of the river,no doubt thanks to a huge opening in the floor that drops awayto the river shore five feet below. Several pilings emerge from thewaters to support the roof above, with mossy ropes slung between them. In two places, rusty manacles hang from the ropes over the water. Two five-foot-wide walkways cross the hole’s edge to the other side of the chamber, where a collection of old cabinets, lockboxes, and piles of clutter are strewn about. Chipped porcelain plates, a cracked goblet, badly rusted silverware, an old wooden shield with a crossbow bolt embedded in it, the odd dinged helm, and other “treasures” litter the floor of this entire chamber. Three tables, their tops heaped with additional clutter, stand amid this mess, while just west of that a wooden door seems to provide access to a walled-off section.

*** Half an hour earlier... ***

Gahariet fidgeted.

Waking up that morning, he would never have dreamt about hearing of Lamm once again, let alone setting out to end him. And yet, here he was, in the company of four others, all of whom had greviously wronged by him, trudging toward the docks of Korvosa with a singular intent. It was a very somber mood, and Gahariet was not overly fond of somber.

Looking over the group, Gahariet decided to try opening up a conversation. "So, um, Gianna. Exactly how does one go about becoming a stealth and traps specialist?"

As Hock demonstrates his strong connection to his inner orc, the half-elf edges away slightly. Oh my. Well, at least he'll make a good distraction! "Hock, you don't know where those balls have been. Trying to distract himself from Hock's rather graphic threats regarding Lamm's gonads, Gahariet focused on replying to Gianna. "I can't say that working for a shrine was what I envisioned doing when I was younger, either, but I mean that in a good way. Granted, studying all the texts and such is hard - I was never exactly a model student." Gahariet rubbed the back of his head. "But it's still fun, and when it's time for magic lessons... those are a blast. Alka's always said I'm a natural." A little spark jumped between his fingers. Not being quite so intent on Lamm's head as the others, Gahariet took a look around the room when he entered - and stood shocked at what he saw. Down in the pool, below the little Lamm dangled so callously, swam a monstrous alligator!

"Alligator in the pool!"

Calling a warning out to the others, Gahariet grabbed his staff in his left hand before snapping up his right arm. His palm wide open and facing forward, he then folded down his thumb and fifth finger before channeling a burst of divine power into his hand and supinating his forearm.

"<COLOR SPRAY!>"

With a quick incantation in words lost to the ages, a marvelous thing happened. A bright burst of light emanated from Gahariet's hand, a rainbow of colors with all the majesty of the night sky, a truly awesome display for all who beheld it... except for the crocodile, whose eyes it quickly barreled towards.

Move action to G5.
Standard action to cast Color Spray. The Gator must make a Will Save of 15 or be subjected to one of the following effects:

3 or 4 HD: The target is blinded and stunned for 1d4 rounds, and then stunned for 1 round.
5 HD: The target is stunned for 1 round.

Additionally, for the purposes of determining the target's (the gator's) Hit Dice, Gahariet has the passive Revelation of Awesome Display, which means that the Gator's total number of Hit Dice is reduced by 4.

It all happened so fast.

One second, the spray of color had washed over the alligator. The next, it had leapt out of the water, completely catching Gahariet off-guard and dragging him down into the depths.

Unable to cast any of his spells, Gahariet desperately aimed a gauntleted fist at the Crocodile's eyes...

So, after a quick consultation of the rulebook, it turns out that not only do divine spells still have components beyond a focus (contrary to what's displayed on the wiki), and not only would the Concentration check be freaking ridiculous, but both Color Spray and Sanctuary have somatic components. So, I have basically only one option left.

Take 20 on the search of the room for a 28

The door is unlocked and swing open easily.

The foul-smelling room seems to be a combination bedroom and study. A wooden bed with a lumpy mattress stands against the east wall, while a round table heaped with dirty plates, bread crusts, stained goblets, fruit rinds, and scuttling cockroaches sits nearby. At the foot of the bed sits a large strongbox, a slighty rusted lock securing its lid. A sagging dresser filled with moth-eaten
clothes well past their glory days is in one corner—what appears to be a wooden hatbox surrounded by a small cloud of flies sits atop this dresser.
This is Gaedren’s home and castle, the place where he sleeps and eats. The old man’s personal habits are very much on display—he has little interest in cleanliness. Bedbugs infest the sheets, a chamber pot pushed under the bed is badly in need of cleaning, and the bits of food heaped on his table have attracted a large nest of roaches.

One of the keys on the ring opens up the lockbox.
Inside
Two leather pouches each containing 50 sp.

Each of these treasures is wrapped in cloth and tied shut
with twine.
-A wand of acid splash (28 charges)
-Narrow teak cigar case inlaid with tiny bits of jade worth 25 gp
-2-pound gold ingot worth 100 gp bearing the Cheliax coat of arms
-Miniature gold crown worth 350 gp
-Fist-sized scrimshaw carving of a kraken with garnets for eyes worth 200 gp
-Silver ring worth 150 gp bearing the inscription “For Emmah—the light in my nights”
-A highly realistic and highly scandalous ivory figurine of two entwined succubi worth 450 gp
-Masterwork shuriken
-An adamantine arrowhead,
-An abalone-shell holy symbol of Shelyn worth 300 gp
-A tiny glass tube containing a dose of oil of keen edge
-An obsidian wand of magic missile (23 charges)
-A crystalline vial (itself worth 50 gp) containing a dose of silversheen
-A bejeweled brooch with a broken clasp.

The Bejewled brooch depicts a pseudodragon and an imp coiled around each other in an almost yin-yang pattern. The pseudodragon’s eye is an amethyst, while the imp’s eye is an emerald. It is very clearly the most expensive thing in the box. I'll need a Knowledge (nobility) check from you and anybody you show it to.

Taking the wand from Wim, Gahariet turned it over in his hands, examining the magically infused stick. He looked up at Braaga. "As far as I can tell, this does not have a spell I am familiar with, and I fear it would do me little good. As such, I think it would be best used by you." He handed it over before continuing his examination of Zellara's head.

Or, in metagame terms, I have a dedicated ranged option (Crossbow) while Braaga does not, and I have no ranks in UMD - meaning, since the spell isn't on my list, the wand is useless to me. The choice, I think, is pretty clear on this one.

Gahariet can tell that whoever the head belonged to has been dead for at least two weeks. Beyond that the deterioration of the head makes any further guesses rather baseless.

His use of detect magic finds an aura of moderate divination on the Harrow deck and a weak aura of evocation on the wands. No megic aura is found on the severed head or elsewhere in the room.

Unfortunately nobody is able to identify who the amulet belongs to but Wim seems to remember seeing somebody important wearing it but just can't place who or when he saw somebody wearing it.

Setting down Zellara's head, Gahariet let out a sigh.

"Did you come to avenge your son? Is that why you called us? To finish the job you could not?"

He turned his head to the harrow deck. It had shone with quite the divination aura.

"And yet... and yet I wonder... how did you appear to us?"

Picking it up, the oracle began shuffling through the cards, looking for the one he had drawn - the Peacock.

In Hock's room...

"Well, I'm no expert, but from what I can gather, Zellara's probably been dead for about two weeks. There was a deck of harrow cards underneath her head that's giving off a moderately strong magical aura, which I'm reckoning may have been what her spirit used to contact us. I'm trying to see if maybe we can get her to come back again..."

He listens carefully to what the priest was saying, amazed that Zellara was such a strong being. Those who are looking around the room have a chance to see Zellara enter the room through the door others will only notice the middle aged women when she starts talking.

"I believe Gahariet that's the long and the short of it. I'm no expert myself on my current condition but as far as I can figure it out my condition has something to do with a series of Harrow readings I had preformed before one of the little Lambs stole my deck. The readings were vague but they spoke of some kind of incredible evil descending upon Korvasa. The kind of evil that will leave this city a blasted wasteland and the citizens dead or scattered to the winds." Zellara says the deck of cards flying to her hands where she begins shuffling it absently.

"I had hoped to be able to preform more Harrowings to better understand the nature of the threat but in the end my deck was stolen and I was powerless to save my city, or my son. However I sense that in the coming storm you all will play a central roll. That is why I reached out to you, not only were you all more than capable of taking down Lamm and his disgusting operation here but it would also allow me to guide you along the path that you all are destined to walk. And allow me to save my city. I am sorry about the lies and misdirection but I thought it was necessary to bring us together. I'm only able to manifest myself like this for a very short time each day but I can communicate with any being holding one of my cards though only through basic thoughts and emotions."

The image of Zellara vanishes sending the cards softly floating back to each character who took their card and the rest of the cards floating back to Gahariet. the last person who had held the deck.

Looks like my instincts were right.

Gahariet jumped a little when Zellara entered the room, but then frowned a little bit in sadness as she related her story.

"Honestly, I'm not all that upset that you lied to us. No-one should have to go through what anyone in this room went through. Plus, even with the matter of vengeance aside, Lamm can never hurt anyone again."A smile returned to the Oracle's face briefly before it took on a more concerned look. "But, this evil that you mention. The one that you were trying to investigate before your deck was stolen, and Lamm killed you. Does it have anything to do with-" Gahariet shook his head. "Well, it might just be silly, but as you were talking about that it kind of popped into my head. Korvosa's never had a monarch sitting on its throne very long. They all seem to meet an unfortunate end, one way or another. Do you think it could be related to that? The Curse of the Crimson Throne?"

Yes. I went there.
Gahariet looked down at Zellara's head. "More importantly... there's the matter of your head. Do you have any wishes for what we should do with it? She answers the questions as she got them.

To Hock she answered his simple question. "I've never heard of a ghost with the abilities I possess but the differences seem so small that I have no objection to you calling me a ghost."

To Wim she said simply I feel like I am fully in this world. Kept here to guide you through the challenges that come up. My Harrowing can provide you with forewarning that will allow you to better save this city. Beyond that it is odd. I feel like I can see everything in the room though I am linked to my cards. It's odd in comparison to I was when I was alive. And yet when I don't think about it feels natural. Like I was born this way.

Finally turning to Gahariet I preformed many Harrowings while thinking about the king there does seem to be some kind of doom fast approaching the king but as long as he sits upon the throne the doom I have forseen will be unable to come about. My people believe in small funerals a few words said over a body buried at a crossroads with a few trinkets. Unfortunately I believe that in the upcoming weeks any of my people you could find will be unable to bury me. I believe that if you tie the hatbox closed put in a few bits of scrap and metal and consign my remains to the waters off the pier with a few words it will suffice for our purposes. Anything more seems excessive since I am still here.

Within moments of leaving the Fishery you discover that the city has gone mad in your absence. All around the city you see great plumes of smoke no doubt from huge fires gone out of control. You also see a wing of Sable company Griffon riders flying at breakneck speed to the palace ignoring as one of their number plummets to earth. In the distance you heard the distinct sounds of metal crashing against metal. You also see citizens putting up crude barricades to protect their homes form looters and rioters.

Even with through the din of combat and a city tearing itself apart at the seems you hear a royal herald screaming his message "The King is dead, long live the queen." You also hear some in the crowds yelling back "Hang the queen hang the usuper jerk!"

You were in the crowd when Queen Ileosa arrived in Korvasa. She had this necklace around her neck that day. It is well known that she has a reward offer out for this piece it being one of her favorites.

As the party emerged from the fishery, Gahariet raised a hand up to shield his face as his eyes adjusted to the light. Upon lowering it, he stared in horror at the chaos. Smoke as fires threatened to engulf Korvosa. The screech of griffons crashing, of metal tearing into metal and flesh. And all of it within under an hour. He clutched the box with Zellara's head in it, his face turning pale.

What in Desna's name...

And then he heard it. The herald cried out the news. The King was dead.

Then Braaga opened his mouth.

Well Gahariet, your curse seems to still be active. Our fair leader is dead. I guess we don't have any anomalies to investigate now right?
Gahariet looked at Braaga with a mix of incredulity and exasperation. Then, in a rare turn of events, it quickly turned to anger.

"What are you- No anoma- DO YOU SEE WHAT IS GOING ON OUT THERE!" Gahariet raised a hand as if to slap the witch doctor, but pulled it back, visibly trying to restrain himself. Clutching his forearm, he audibly began muttering, apparently having forgotten he was in the presence of others. "Remember the glad game, remember your creed. No anger, no sadness, never indeed. There's aught to be glad about, no matter the situation. Whatever the tides, whatever your station." Having calmed down a little, but still visibly annoyed, Gahariet snapped his gaze back up.

"Okay, first of all, it's not my curse. It's the curse of this city. 300 years, and no king has inherited the throne from his father. I mean, I'm horrible at history, and even I know that. So no. NOT my curse." Gahariet's eyes seemed to lose a little of their fire, and he rubbed his forearm. "That is to say, um... Full disclosure, I am cursed. Bit of a side effect due to Desna channeling her raw divine power through me. Objects sometimes move without reason, winds blow indoors, people around me tend to come down with the flu more than usual, objects fall on my head more than would be expected-"

Gahariet was interrupted as, against all odds, a week old fish fell off the roof of the fishery and landed splat on his head, sending juice spraying in all directions before gracelessly sliding off. The oracle looked nonplussed.

"So yes, pretty sure I'm haunted, it might have caused my birth father to toss me out and WE'RE GETTING OFF TOPIC! Sorry, lost the happy, happy's back (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omguEZ7jy5E)." A deep breath. "Furthermore, who said anything about anomalies?! And even if we had, the king is dead, there are riots in the streets, and Gianna's brother is still out there! There is plenty to investigate! Now, I don't know about you, but after I say a few words-" Gahariet rapped on the hatbox, "-I am going to go and find Paolo."

Turning to the edge of the dock, Gahariet then began to hurry through a prayer.

"Song of the Spheres, Tender of Dreams, one of your children has been taken before her time. Though her death has been avenged, her spirit lies restless. Grant her the peace in death she could not have in life, and let our dreams and travels be blessed by your protection. Amen."

Dropping the box into the water, Gahariet then turned back to the crew, but stopped as his eyes passed over Gianna. "Is everything alright, Gianna? You look like you've just realized something."

Take it easy. Kings are sitting on a throne, ordering stuff around, then someone kills them. This is how their "high" society works. I never said anything about NOT rescuing Paolo, it's just that never in my life I found interest in helping those who disregard my existence and the terms I live in. The king is dead, his fanatics will come up with a story of why he died, after a while they will select a new king, and the circle goes on. I agree that the riots and all that are kind of new and extreme, but I doubt they will remain for long. Also, I find no reason on why you would resolve to violence just because I expressed my opinion. But anyway, let's leave that behind for the time being.

"The King is dead, long live the Queen!"

Memories surge to the forefront of her mind, memories of Ileosa's arrival in Korvosa. Gianna had taken special note of the Queen-to-be's lavish jewelry; purely habit, she did the same for all rich and noble figures in the city to see who might be worth robbing. "The Queen! I just remembered where I saw that brooch before. She was wearing it in the procession when she first arrived in the city. It's supposed to be one of her favorite pieces, I think there's a reward for returning it to her." The rogue takes a look at the rioting crowds and draws her sap. The way was hampered by the chaos unfolding in the street. A street blocked off by heavily armored knights as they brutally cracked down on looters and rioters. Other times you are forced to turn away by furniture barricades manned by middle aged men wielding knives telling you they don't want any trouble they just want to survive the night.

<COLOR SPRAY!>

Move action to 5C, then burning a spell slot and Standard action to use Color Spray. Since it is a 15-foot cone, it will hit the Mobs at E3, E4, and F4.

As stated earlier...

The Target must make a Will Save of 15 or be subjected to one of the following effects:

2 HD or Less: The target is unconscious, blinded and stunned for 2d4 rounds, then blinded and stunned for 1d4 rounds, and then stunned for 1 round.
3 or 4 HD: The target is blinded and stunned for 1d4 rounds, and then stunned for 1 round.
5 HD: The target is stunned for 1 round.

Additionally, for the purposes of determining the target's Hit Dice, Gahariet has the passive Revelation of Awesome Display, which means that the target's total number of Hit Dice is reduced by 4.
Before he saw the resolution of the spell's effects, Gahariet turned back and called out to the rest of the party. "Try not to kill them if you can help it!"

As a reminder for those of us who have less experience in Pathfinder, any lethal attack can deal nonlethal damage by subtracting -4 from the attack roll.

Ok, Let's see how this new toy of mine works huh?
Braaga draws the wand Gahariet gave him before, and waves it around feeling the magical energy taking form. With a quick move he points it towards the rioter in front of him, unleashing a strong bullet of pure force which travels directly to the man's chest.

Move Action: Draw Wand of Magic Missile.

Gianna squints through the dazzling lightshow of Gahariet's spell, waiting for her vision to clear before moving in. Three rioters slump to the ground. Very nice! Unfortunately, she can't really get a flank on Wim's opponent with the narrow quarters, so the half-elf rushes the leftmost rioter still standing. Whirling her leather sandbag, she swings for his temple.

Braaga's magic missle flew striking the human square in the chest just as Wim moved in on the attack.

Wim brought his rapier whipping around cutting a thin line down the mans arm before smashing the hilt into the man stomach sending the man sprawling onto the cobblestones.

The two members of the mob seeing that their four compatriots have already been knocked out begin fleeing the scene allowing Gianna one last strike with her sap.

The mob carried off my bodyguard and I was sure I was going to die when those hooligans started beating me. I owe all of you my life. I know it's not much but it is all I have on me at the moment." Armin says pulling out a small coin purse with 25 paltinum pieces in it. Handing it to Wim he continues "I owe you five my very life. "It was the least we could do. The name's Gahariet Levesque, and these are Hock, Wim, Gianna, and Braaga." Gahariet not-so-subtly displayed his holy symbol of Desna as he held up a hand in greeting, allowing Armin a way of identifying them later.

As the noble fled, he turned to the others, nodding at Hock's suggestion. "I second that motion. I'd rather not have any more delays, and more importantly..." He looked down at the unconscious men."That spell won't knock them out for long. I suggest we make ourselves scarce."

The nobleman takes his leave hurrying down a side alley away from another group of rioters. Hopefully he'll be able to make it to safety. But his well being is secondary to Donald who ducks down another side street leading the group deeper into Old Korvasa.

You are able to avoid any more entanglements either from the rioters, the guard, or the brutal looking knights that have been called in to aid the guard in quelling the riots. Soon enough Donald points to an old looking building. Saying That's our hide out. I think I should go in first so that Paulo doesn't rabbit when he sees heavily armed people coming for the door."

You see a heavily armed man checking periodically from inside of the building. He's taking some precautions to remain unhidden but unfortunately his current condition of very drunk makes his attempts to remain unseen unhelpful.

The house is built in the old Korvasa style with brick walls and marble steps that have become stained and cracked very recently from the looks of it. The house is dwarfed by the larger newer building crowding in on it from either side.

"There is a crawlspace underneath that me and Paulo used to break in. Some of the board people used to repair the floor weren't nailed in completely so you're able to worm your way up."

As Donald spoke, Gahariet looked over the dilapidated building. Run down, few methods of entry... the perfect hiding spot. He raised an eye in concern as the boy suggested going in alone. "Are you sure, Donald? I know we've made it this far without too many issues, but going places alone doesn't really sound safe to me. Why not bring Gianna along? She's Paolo's aunt, so I doubt he'll bolt if he sees her."

Thank Desna she spotted him. I completely did not realize he was there.

"As good a plan as any. What sort of distraction do you have in mind? A mock fight or argument, perhaps?"

Now that Gahariet's realized just what a precarious situation they're in, he'll be double checking to make sure no-one else is around and listening in.

Donald looked at Gianna in absolute shock. "You can't be! Lamm said he killed you because Paulo wouldn't shut up about how you were going to come rescue him. He even showed Paulo a handful of elf ears." Donald said tears forming in the corner of his eyes. "If I had known I would have brought him right to your door but Paulo was sure that you were dead. Paulo will be very happy to see you alive."

You're able to slip into the crawlspace while the man is distracted. The crawlspace gets pretty tight almost to the point of claustrophobia before you locate the loose boards that Donald talked about.

The boards slip out of their groves soundlessly and as you extract yourself you hear somebody talking in the other room.

Looks like it's just a fight out there. Doesn't look like they're coming near the door. Are you sure that Donald is coming? This might be a pointless wait"Says a male voice slurred with drunkenness.

With that he wanders to the front door, opening it up and waving the party in leaving Gianna and Paulo alone for a few minutes.

"I thought you were dead. Lamm told me how you and mom had offered to let him keep me if he let you live but he said he had to kill you because of the things I had said. Is mom still alive? Did Lamm really kill her?" Paulo said trying to hold back the sobs of joy being only moderately successful.

"Wonderful. It seems your nephew was safe and sound after all." After finding a place to sit, the oracle eased himself down carefully, letting the tension of the past couple of hours wash away. His brow crinkled as Wim's own remark on the situation betrayed a hint of bitterness, but he made no mention of it.

"Well, that's the most important thing over and done with for today. Or at least, the most time sensitive one." That brooch will still have to be returned at some point, but we can worry about that when the streets are clear of rioters - and when I have the energy for more than one spell. He then turned to acknowledge Hock. "I agree - a rest sounds perfect right about now."

As the oracle sat there, however, a nagging question began to run through his mind. Where do we go from here? Riots, the king's death, it's the perfect environment for evil to sneak in. But we've no real good place to start investigating, other than Zellara's vague warning. The oracle pulled the harrow deck from his belt pouch, looking it over. And I'd wager she's exhausted for today... Perhaps I'll consult her tomorrow.

Who knows what ill fortune this city has yet to face. I need to return to my house, take care of things and check if the riot has done any damage there.
As he hears the others talking about resting he thinks that there is nothing else for them that night. He stands up.
To Gianna: I am very happy that you found your nephew and that we finally got rid of that scum Lamm.
To the drunk man: Also, I don't know who you are stranger, but thank you for talking care of Paulo until we arrived.
To everyone: Unfortunately the situation in the town does not allow me to stay and rest with you. She can't very well take Paolo out through streets full of rioters. And while her comrades have proven themselves trustworthy in a fight, now that she's found her nephew, she doesn't want to let him out of her sight.

The rogue nods to Braaga over Paolo's head. "I understand. Travel safely, Braaga. We will send word before settling the matter of the brooch." He deserves a full cut of the reward and recognition by the Queen, after all. As for Gianna's own modest apartment, she has every possible entrance, including the chimney, locked and trapped with the very best devices she can afford. The drunken man takes another swig of his bottle before answering the question clearly putting his currently very limited faculties to coming up with the answer.

"Name's Grau, Grau Soldado. Formerly of the city guard. Or currently I don't know they probably haven't even noticed that I'm gone yet. This city is doomed anyway. The king is dead and now the city is tearing itself apart. The guard can't stop violence like this and those nasty looking knight bastards are cracking the city apart." He takes one last swig from the bottle before deciding it is empty placing it gingerly on the ground and pulling out a flask.

"Ran into tiny Paulo on the street last night trying to find his dinner. He and I had run into each other before so I wanted him to wait out at my place but he insisted on waiting for Donald here to show up so I decided to wait here with him. Fortunately the previous owner had a hidden stash of the drink which is helping me get through this troubling time for the city."

You remember that Grau used to be a well known and liked apprentice of Vencarlo Orisini one of, if not the greatest duelist in all of Korvasa. His fellow apprentice Sabina Merrin went on to become the personal bodyguard of no less a person than Queen Ileosa. All three had a rather nasty falling out a few years back. Since then Vencarlo has taken a less active role in training new duelists and Grau has gone on to become a very successful and popular sergeant in the City Guard.

The house you currently are in is a two story building that has held up well despite what is clearly a lack of care for it in several months. The place has been lightly looted as evidenced by the fact that everything that could be easily carried by one person has been taken. There are no chairs or silverware in the house but there is a large musty bed upstairs.

"I don't think it's safe to go home with the riots currently going on. Though of course I won't stop you if you think you can make it home safely." Grau says taking a small sip from the flask "This place might not be the most comfortable but it should be a safe enough place to stay the night."

As Grau revealed his identity, and his former membership in the city guard, Gahariet could not help but stare. Eventually, his face contorted - but not out of anger. Instead, a disappointed look crossed his features.

"So... that's it? I mean, I don't blame you for being down; anyone who would claim to not be affected by this is lying. But you're not at least going to try to help? I mean, look at us." Gahariet gestured to the party. "We didn't have the resources or the backing of the guard, but we didn't let that stopping us from protecting a man who the rioters were on the verge of tearing to shreds. And we did it all without needing to draw blood, either."

Granted, it would have been even better if we could have talked them down instead, but that's neither here nor there.

"Yes, things are dim right now. But this city? It'll only go the crows if we let it." Gahariet walked into the bedroom, searching for a cushion or extra blanket. "Of course, now's not the best time; we're all a little bloodied, and rest would be good before we did anything further. But think about it, at least."

He then turned to the party. "I can make do without the bed, if someone else wants it."

And the gods only know we'll need decent Guardsmen in coming days, given that half the city seems to have lost their minds over the fact that we've got a Queen instead of a King now." Note to self, do not use any thieves' cant as long as he's around. She takes a seat on a large, somewhat tattered armchair and scoots over to make room for Paolo. The group is able to find food either the day old bread from a bakery, some hot pies filled with unidentifiable meat from a vendor or even some apples and bacon smuggled over the wall by an enterpenuerial soul who wormed his way through a crack in the wall and sold it to you at a price half again what you would usually pay. And after a quick breakfast Grau and the group set out to the guard Barracks.

Feel free to RP anything you want to say on the way to the barracks.

As you approach you notice a large number of Royal guards at the gates of the Barracks the captain steps up and says "Only those with official business will be allowed in."

Sergant Grau is allowed in once he explains that he is with the guard reporting in. But the royal guard refuses entry to the party.

Well folks I think its time we brave the city and take care of any errands we have for the night. I believe there are children that might have a home to get back to and we have some items to sell. Grau you dont mind if we make a couple of stops on our way to the guard house do you? If you dont want to go wandering all over town we can meet you there as well? Hock dont forget your gator bits. We have a hat to go order too. Once everyone is ready to head out, Wim will lead the way, both knowing which of his contacts would be willing to buy the items he has, and having Braaga's address

Ahh the city. Oppurtinity really is everywhere today. I wonder just how far the rabbit whole this little trinket will take us. Wim seems to be walking with a lighter step then he did yesterday. Still keeping his eyes peeled for any other opportunists that might be out.

Gahariet nods at Wim's suggestions. "As long as we're on the subject of returning Paolo home... Well, if it's not too much trouble, I'd like to stop by the Temple of Desna for a couple of minutes. Alka's likely to be worried sick about me."

"We can do that, Gahariet." Gianna nods in agreement. "If anyone is selling arms and armor after last night, I think some better armor would be lovely. Something that allows me full range of motion, I nearly got caught in the crawlspace! But first Paolo needs to get home." She looks over at Donald. "Do you have somewhere to go, Donald? If not, I'm sure Amalia and Rafaele would be willing to put you up, at least in the short term." Provided the two musicians have the money to support another child, Gianna knows they want one. And if they can't support another mouth to feed right now, they have an extensive network of friends and colleagues. If anyone can find a good home for an orphan, they can.

"If they can put him up even just for the day it will give me time to secure him a berth in the barracks if that is something he would want to do. I'm certainly not going to let him just wander around at night. Assuming of course I haven't burned too many bridges. At the very least I can pay them back for taking care of him for a little while." Grau says.

"I have nobody to look after me and nowhere else to go." Donald says trying to maintain his demeanor as a street smart kid who isn't scared, even though he is clearly terrified of being cut loose.

"I'm sure they'd be happy to." Gahariet looked to Gianna for confirmation before continuing on.

"Depending on how much we get from selling everything off today, as well, I'd like to see if we can stop by any magic stores. After last night, I have a feeling that we're going to get into a lot of scrapes, and I only have so many spells I can cast per day. A wand, or something to that effect, would be just the thing."

Just until we get everything sorted out OOC as far as shopping goes, it may be prudent to move the scene to dropping off Donald/stopping by the temple. That last one should only need a couple posts from me to resolve.

Soon enough after Donald and Paulo are dropped off with Gianna's family and you've purchased new weapons and magical gear. Then you escort Grau back to the main guard barracks. Along the way you see a great deal of destruction as though the guard couldn't even keep control of the areas surrounding their barracks.

As you approach you notice a large number of Royal guards at the gates of the Barracks the captain steps up and says "Only those with official business will be allowed in."

Sergeant Grau is allowed in once he explains that he is with the guard reporting in. But the royal guard refuses entry to the party. Informing you that the queen is currently inside with city leaders securing their plans to protect the city against further unrest.

Gahariet stood at the gates of the barracks with the rest of the party. In his pouch, he had the comfortable weight of a brand new wand of curing magic; only effective on light wounds, to be sure, but it would still serve them greatly in the days to come. In his heart, he had a sense of relief after having reunited, if only briefly, with Alka - not that that had stopped her from scolding the young man for disappearing so suddenly after she had nearly crushed his ribs in a giant hug. The ensuing conversation, conducted in private, about what was to come had been every more pitched.

"So, let me get this straight. The reason you disappeared yesterday is because a harrow card appeared out of nowhere, telling you that someone needed your help to strike back at the man whose goons beat you up and left you in the alley where I found you all those years ago."

"That's about the gist of it."

"And then, after you'd broken in, nearly got eaten by an alligator, put him down, and rescued the kid who he'd taken hostage, you found out that she was actually dead, her ghost is haunting a pack of harrow cards, and that she'd made a prophecy that doom is about to descend on Korvosa."

"Got it in one, mom."

"Honey, you are really lucky that I had a rather ominous dream along the same lines last night while I was performing the Midnight Prayers, or else I would have to say that is the stupidest, most hackneyed thing I've ever heard. And after you scare me half to death, making me worry all night long about whether or not you were dead, you just expect me to let you go back out there!?"

"Mom, I have to! You said it yourself, you've seen the portents! This has to be why Desna put some of her power in me, all those years ago!"

"...I know, Gari. But you're my son, and to see you throw yourself headfirst into danger like this..."

"Mom. It's the only way. This is your city. My city. And I'm not just going to let it go to the crows."

Gahariet reached out and took his mother's hand.

"I'm not saying goodbye."

Alka sighed, and looked her adopted son square in the eye.

"Okay, honey. Just... just promise you won't take any unnecessary risks."

Gahariet hugged the priestess. "I promise, Mom. I love you."

"I love you too, sweetie. I'll be praying for you."
Steeling his resolve, Gahariet turned to the guards. "Believe us, guardsmen, when I say that we are on official business. We have information that directly pertains to her majesty."

Nice and truthful, without being overly specific or making us look like enterprising thieves in want of a reward for nicking off with something.

As they walk through the city towards the barracks Wim subconsciously runs his fingers over the hilt of the masterfully crafted blade. Once they are stopped and Gahariet attempts to talk sweet talk the guards. He chimes in:
I know the night was long and were all on edge, but I can assure you I am loyal to the throne and we are here on a matter of a sensitive nature and we need to speak with Her Majesty if she can find a moment.

Seeing that the guard are too on edge to see to be reasoned with, Wim pulls the brooch from his belt pouch. Holding it out in the palm of his hand. I believe Her Majesty has been seeking this item for some time. Right before the rioting broke out my companions and I had an run in with a Mr Lamm. We found this hidden away in his hideout.

However once Wim showed him the brooch he immidiately sprang into action. Sending another guard back into the Barracks. "I've sent for the Queen's personal bodyguard Sabina Merin. She'll make the final call about if any of you will be allowed to see the Queen. If she allows you in you'll need to leave your weapons with the guards. Only the Royal guards are allowed to carry weapons in her majesty's presence."

A few minutes later a beautiful woman in finely crafted full plate walks out of the Barracks.

“Greetings. They tell me you’ve something that belongs to the queen. Is this correct?”

After you show her the brooch she stands aside and motions for the group to enter the barracks. As the guards look to follow her in she says “You may return to your posts. These heroes pose no threat to the queen.”

As she guides you through the Barracks she asks. "How should I introduce you to Queen Ileso? Due to the circumstances your names should suffice we are not in court so we won't stand on ceremony. But if you would like me to introduce you with any titles or grand deeds I certainly can."

Gianna isn't happy about leaving her weapons behind, but this is to be expected when visiting royalty. She pulls a second dagger out of her boot and a third one from under the armor of her left arm, handing them over along with her rapier, sap, and the dagger on her belt. The one nestled between her breasts and the one down her back remain in place, though. Nobody else has been strip-searched, hopefully giving up the second and third daggers will satisfy the guards that she truly is unarmed.

Sabine looks at Hock quizzically but when Hock returned the look with a guileless smile and a display of a small bag she decided against asking what on earth he could possibly mean.

She led the group to a door and instructs the group "Please enter one at a time as I introduce you. I know it's a bother but trust me it'll allow the queen to better remember your names and the deed you have preformed for her on this day." With that she slipped into the room.

In a clear voice she announced each of you names waiting a few second for the introduced to enter the room before announcing the next member of the party. Your Majesty, Field Marshal Cressida Kroft may I present to you Braaga, Gianna Capello, Wimbert Haylock, Gahariet Levesque, priest-in-training of Desna and Hock bearer of Lamm's ... Manhood. These are the heroes who are responsible for the return of your treasured brooch and for bringing the thieves to justice.

Turning to the group she said "It is my pleasure to introduce you to Cressida Kroft Field Marshal of the city guard, and her Majesty Queen Ileosa.

Field Marshal Kroft is a dark haired, tired and harried looking woman who in better times would no doubt be quite attractive. As it is she is probably only just keeping herself form collapsing due to exhaustion. However you can spare no more than a glance at Field Marshal Kroft before your gaze is drawn to the queen.

http://i771.photobucket.com/albums/xx356/TiamatZ/CrimsonThrone4thEd/QueenSad.jpg (http://s771.photobucket.com/user/TiamatZ/media/CrimsonThrone4thEd/QueenSad.jpg.html)

Wim you remember seeing the queen when she first came to the city a few years ago. As she rode up to the palace you remember thinking that she was the most beautiful woman you have ever seen even if you didn't usually like the way the tall folk looked. Since that time she has no doubt grown even more lovely. You realize now that she was only a lovely girl when you saw her last time now you see her as a woman in the prime of her beauty and not even the mourning veil she wears diminishes that.

Any who haven't seen her before are struck by how beautiful she is. None of you truly believed the stories and rumors about her but now you find that even the most over the top story of how beautiful the young queen was did not do her justice.

Sabine takes the brooch from Wim and presents it to the queen with a flourish before standing next to the queen's chair.

With the brooch now in hand the queen speaks “This brooch was stolen from me some time ago—I had not expected to see it again, truth be told. And yet, here on my darkest day, you come before me with kindness. The return of this brooch is much more than an honorable deed. It is inspiration. It is hope.

I love Korvosa, as my husband did before me. His death has shocked the city as it has me, but I will not see his legacy destroyed in death, and I shall not see my city torn apart. All Korvosa stands at the precipice of a disaster wrought by her citizens—these riots cannot continue. You have already done my heart a great service in returning this bauble to me on this dark day, and you shall be rewarded. Yet, perhaps you can serve your city more.

The Korvosan Guard is stretched thin, and it can certainly use the aid of heroes such as yourself. Field Marshal Kroft no doubt has many jobs that can use your particular set of skills and by my order she shall induct you into the guard. Now, I need to continue with my consultations with Kroft—there are still many preparations that need to be completed. Again, I thank you for the kindness you have shown me, and I hope your days of serving the crown are only just beginning.”

She then motions for one of her valets to bring you a small silver chest filled with 12 gold ingots each stamped with the royal seal of Korvasa before you are escorted form the room and led to a small conference room.

Each of the gold ingots is worth 100 gp 1200 total.

The chest itself is worth an extra 50 gp

Some guard bring in a small flagon of water. After about half an hour the Field Marshal enters and more collapses than sits into one of the tables.

Looking you all over she says Greetings— I know we were just introduced but I never liked that ceremonial stuff. My name is Cressida, and heroes of your caliber are exactly what Korvosa needs now. You’ve been on the streets. You know better than me how bad things are out there. It’s breaking my heart to see Korvosa tear herself apart like this. Every little bit of aid we can get from upstanding citizens like you helps. I figured I would give you the chance to formally accept since the queen didn't really give you an option. If you’re willing, I’d very much like to retain your services as agents of the Guard. I don’t need to say, of course, that you’ll be well compensated for these services.”

Assuming the group doesn't walk out the door.

“Korvosa’s got enough troubles as it is without my own men losing their way and going rogue. As much as it pains me to admit, though, this has happened several times already. Many guards have deserted their posts, more concerned about friends and family than the city. I can understand this, yet not all of the deserters have family—some of them are simply using the riots as an excuse for personal gain. One such man is Verik Vancaskerkin. Worse than a lone deserter, he’s convinced a small group of fellow guards that Queen Ileosa is going to ruin the city. Whether she does or doesn’t isn’t the point—right now, we’ve got a city-wide crisis on our hands, and I need all of my guards working with me to see us through. A deserter is worse than a lost resource—it’s an infection. I can’t afford to pull any of my other patrols off duty to deal with Vancaskerkin, and I’d rather not expose any of them to him anyway, since I neither want Vancaskerkin to infect more guards with his talk of secession, nor do I want some overly patriotic guard killing Vancaskerkin outright. I need impartial, skilled talent. Like you."
“Vancaskerkin and his men have holed up in an abandoned butcher’s shop up in Northgate—the place was called All the World’s Meat. I need you to check out the place. Try to avoid killing any of the deserters if you can, but if you must, they brought it upon themselves when they threw in their lot with Vancaskerkin. For him, I’d really prefer it if you could capture him alive and return him to me for interrogation, but if he makes that impossible, I’ll accept his body as well. Finally, see if you can find out why Verik deserted—if there’s more to it than simple personal politics, I need to know immediately. This early in the day the place is fairly uncrowded which is what he prefers.

Shortly after Wim takes his seat but before a drink could be ordered another halfling walks and walks right back to Wim's table pulling up a chair and with a sigh he plops down in the chair. This halfling looks exhausted like he has yet to rest from the events of the previous night.

"There is no time to get you all kitted out in guard uniforms but I can make sure the quartermaster knows that you each are to be given a sap in addition to a guard badge though with the current situation I suggest you don't use your badges to try and cow Northgate into letting you drag Vancaskerkin off. We don't know who is sympathetic to Vancaskerkin's cause so if he catches wind of you moving in on him he might bring in people to help him hold his hideout turning it into a bloodbath which I again need to stress I really really don't need. Also as freelance members of the guard you are able to bunk here to sleep should you need a safe place to sleep I can also make sure that Theandra Darklight extends you a line of credit if you would prefer to operate out of the Three Rings Tavern I've known adventuring groups that find working in the guard Barracks... stifling. She says opening a box in front of her containing 5 beaten up guard badges.

By the power vested in me blah blah blah. You all have been deputized into the guard please try to make my job easier not harder going forward.

Hawthorn nods his head "I've been hearing that name an awful lot lately. Made watch sergeant after only three years in the guard. Iomeadea couldn't have risen in the ranks that fast. Somebody out there wanted Verik in a higher position and they pulled a ton of strings and paid out a small fortune in bribes to get him to where he is."

The halfling waves for a beer

"Or where he was. Heard he left the guard right after the king's death became a philanthropic butcher. Just this morning he was handing out meat to everybody who came by his little shop in Northgate saying it was his duty to make sure nobody starved thanks to the usurper queen. Bit of an odd choice for a guy who my contacts on the guard claim would knife his own mother to get ahead. Maybe his mystery backer convinced him that there was a bigger position in it for him if he was able to calm down Northgate. Though all I've been able to suss outwhoever is backing him is old money from the nobby parts of town."

"So now that I've scratched your back you mind letting me know what the job is? In the current environment even the smallest scrapes of information are worth more than gold.

Braaga sees the badges but he doesn't reach to take one.
Don't get me wrong, I mean I do feel honored and I understand how unique this situation is for us and I totally appreciate it. However I am not fond of badges or generally symbols other than the ones I already bear. I also thank you for your hospitality but I would prefer to stay at my home in the Old Korvosa basically because I fell more comfortable there and also because I have to take care of my mule.
He turns to the others:
I suggest we meet in the morning, at the entrance of Northgate. Logic says that the security will be tighter at night and I doubt that most of us will be able to sneak in without noticing us. Also, if that Vancaskerkin guy has any spies in the palace or around it, it would be better if we disperse before we go there. I bought some magical scrolls earlier. I will study some of them today as soon as I return to my place so that I can be of more help tomorrow.

Now if that's all, I would like to depart and start my preparations. As far as the sap goes, give it to our smasher here to practice.

In no small part because if that does happen, it'll probably mean we failed.

Grabbing a badge, Gahariet turned it over in the light. "Honestly, both the Three Rings and the barracks have their advantages, as far as a rest spot. What do you guys think?"

Gahariet nods, seeing the logic behind Braaga's statements, but takes the badge he was offered - just in case. He then tucked both inside his belt pouch - easy enough to produce, not out in the open where anyone could see.

Gahariet visibly squirmed at the thought of waiting, but tried to be more diplomatic than during the intial riot.

If we're going to be working together, I need to get the rapport back how it was when we were first fighting Lamm, and I was patching us up afterwards.

"I get the logic behind that, but... If daylight's the issue, then now would be as good a time as any - it's still midday. What preparations do you need to make, exactly?"

I need to perform a ritual to transfer the arcane energy from these scrolls to myself. This way I will be able to prepare myself for casting this spell regularly, without needing to buy it again and again. I need one hour for each scroll and I need to do the ritual for at least 2 of them. One is to help for making them sleep unconscious and the other can be used either as help for us to make no sounds or force them to be quiet so they can't raise an alarm or something similar. This means at least 2 hours for the rituals. But in order to be able to use them, I will have to go through an eight-hour rest and perform another mystical ritual which allows the spirits to fill me with arcane energy for a certain period of time.

The question is, just how time-sensitive is this matter?" Gahariet turned to Cressida. "Do you think Vancaskerkin would do too much damage if we left him unmolested for another day? I'm sure the rest of us could find something else to do to help you in the meantime."

"As I said there is no rush with it. He hasn't been attacking officials or rallying people into murderous rages so he's actually near the smallest of our problems. So he'll keep for another day or so. For today I think you should try to scout out his hideout though of course we'll never say no to a little help. There are guardsmen still wounded and we could use some extra men out there on patrol to allow some of our more exhausted men to rest." The Field Marshal says.

"Actually... it might be easier for me to just stay at the inn for a few days. My place isn't exactly close to either the barracks or the Three Rings, and if we need to get going in a hurry, it would be easier to only have to fetch one person as opposed to two."

Draining her glass of water, the rogue continues. "I need to check on my house sometime today, make sure no looters got in and such. But after that I'll have a snoop around and see if anyone I know has any good dirt on Vancaskerkin. You'd be surprised what beggars and street kids overhear."

We were collected by a ghost and pointed at Lamm like a knife. Its quiet the rabbit hole Ive stumbled into. I feel like I'm just a blade being pointed at its next target. I dislike not knowing which piece on the chess board I am. Wim sighs as he thinks over the last couple of days shaking his head as he does. I am supposed to meet up with one of my new companions Gianna to do a little bit of scouting work. Dont worry about the badge out history means more to me than this thing. Although if you hear of anything that could be of use let me know. If you need me, the guards put me up over at Three Rings. One last favor, I dont quiet trust these new companions. See what you can dig up about Gianna, Gahariet and Braaga. Wim stands up pulling Hawthorn up and giving him a friendly hug before heading out the door.

He also will have the authority to set you up on patrols or in the infirmary to help our healers get our men back on the street. She says scanning a pad of paper she had in front of her.

"Liertenant Gyle will be your liaison if you can follow me. Now you'll be reporting to me for assignments Lt. Gyle will be a contact in order to help you better integrate the guards resources and yours while I'm being overwhelmed by the current crisis. Good luck with Verik I have no doubts about your success now if you'll follow me I can introduce you to Lt. Gyle and leave you in his capable hands." Down the hallway where a few members of her staff are waiting. She introduces you to a tall thin man with a thin mustache who leads you to the Quartermaster for saps and manacles and then he attaches you to patrols or the infirmary depending on how you want to help the guard. He can also assign another guard to take anybody who wants to set up the bunks in the Three Rings.

You can feel Hawthorne chuckling a little as he hugs you back. "Take care of yourself. I've heard that some of Verik's boys have been hiring themselves as mercenaries if you ask them about the Night's special cuts."

Walking up to Northgate it feels like the pressure buildup before a storm. Guards travel in heavily armed groups, the knights you saw the night before are quick to descend upon random people accosting them and dragging them off towards the citadel. Through it all there are people trying to get enough food to feed their families or even to locate loved ones who might have gone missing in the chaos last night.

Following Cressida, Gahariet carefully considered which posting would be better. While he had a good chunk of healing magic at his disposal, it was not infinite - and depending on how many guardsmen were out of commission, he could quite easily burn through it all quickly. On top of that, once that ran out, his skills with mundane healing were not especially robust.

If it were a matter of patching up one or two people - which is what I meant by my original offer - or stabilizing them so that they could get to proper healing... Aha!

"Thinking it over, I believe my talents would be best suited to helping your men on patrol, Lieutenant."

I can use my skills at talking people down to help cool things before they get out of hand, and magic and a sap if that fails - plus, my healing skills really are best suited to helping one or two people who've gotten into combat anyway. This is brilliant! Things are looking up at last - we're in a position to help people, and better yet, one to head off whatever's threatening Korvosa.

Incidentally, for those just going to the Three Rings, some time might best be spent selling off the ingots and chest, which should give all of us 250 gp.

Once that's done, she heads for her modest apartment to look it over and make note of anything that might need fixing or replacing. Hmm, Amalia and Rafaele might have something to say; they sing and play in taverns at night, and liquor always loosens tongues.

Gianna finds that the front of her apartment has suffered some dmage probably from rocks or bricks being hurled against it. No broken windows but the door has suffered some damage probably before the guard descended on this street. When she asks Amalia and Rafaele about Verik and his crew she finds out that they have taken to calling themselves the "Crow Hammer Boys" and that four ex guardsmen joined up with Verik. That's all they've heard though they will make sure to keep their ears to the ground and hopefully should have more for you tomorrow morning.

Gaheriet is attached to a patrol lead by a sergeant Gregor who is thankful for the extra help "The guard needs all the help we can get. Last night our Lt broke under the pressure and riled up a huge crowd me and Stewart had to break into a home and barricade the door just to stop the crowd from tearing us apart. Probably would have died last night if it wasn't for those Knights of the Nail. Heaven sent they were cause once they started cracking heads and wading through the rioters they didn't have the time to tear me and Stewart apart so we were able to slip back to the citadel. Today we're going to show them that the guard is still here and that if they pull the same stunt again tonight we'll go even harder on them." The patrol is largely uneventful though your skills do come in handy as one guard takes a large stone to the head, you're able to stablize and heal him before he lost any blood and you are able to convince a group to dismantle their barricades in Old Korvasa.
