I was recently talking with some people about creating games. I know we won't make any amazing, or even close to that, products, but it could be fun to play around with game creation. The only problem is that the (free) software my friends wanted to use was not available for mac.

So, does anyone know some free or relatively cheap game creating software that works for mac? I realize having a Mac is a big setback gamewise, but I'm hoping someone knows some software that works.

Unfortunately, I cannot contribute in the slightest, but I am also interested (for Windows, not Mac OS).

If you are using Windows, you can take my friends suggestion and try out GameMaker: Studio (https://www.yoyogames.com/studio).

Unity (http://unity3d.com/get-unity/download) is available for both Windows and Mac for free! There's a Pro version that's as expensive as you can imagine, but there's a plethora of features available for free. The paywalls are actually pretty few and far between. I use Unity to my game, Hypt, and it's worked out pretty well for me.

Huh. It can even make SRPG's (I'm looking at you, Shining Force).

I may have a new summer project.

Stencyl (http://www.stencyl.com/) works on most major consumer Operating Systems, the free license makes Flash games that have a similar availability spread.

I second Unity. I'm using it to make a fighting game, and it has so many features that allow you to do so much, so easily.

Third-ing Unity. My girlfriend is currently in a year-long university class where the main project is creating a Civilization-based game, and they're using Unity. She did most of the early stages, so I haven't seen the nearly-finished product yet, but I'm excited to see what it looks like.
