Hypothetically, say I bought a copy of the Tome of Battle from DriveThruRPG (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse/pub/44/Wizards-of-the-Coast/subcategory/9730_9731/Dungeons--Dragons-3x). And as great as it is to have the searchable PDF, sometimes I'd REALLY like a physical copy to have at a table to pass around. So, I'd like to print a copy out.

Before I do so, I have a few questions.

1. Is this legal? I mean, I own the book. I think. Sorry, my bad...
2. What's the cheapest way to do so? I own a printer already, but is it cheaper to just have Staples do it?
3. Has anyone done this before, and if so what did you use for a binding? I'd like to stay away from a binder like kids use for school, if possible. Something flat would be good.

Figured this was probably a decent place to ask, before I did anything.

According to the FAQ, unless the document is print protected, it seems to be fine.

However, whether it is legal or not, I do not know, and couldn't answer it even if I did by forum rules.

The mods frown upon giving legal advice (by which I mean, don't do it man!), so i wont touch that.

As for printing costs, i recommend inquiring with your local staples as to the costs of printing so many pages and compare it with the cost of ink and paper for your printer, because it will take a lot of both. And though you may want to avoid a 3-ring binder like people use at school, I have found them to be the most convenient way of storing my printed D&D materials.

Frankly, depending on the costs, you may also want to look into just buying a pre-printed-and-bound copy. Theres a non-zero chance that it will be cheaper.

Tome of Battle is running around $100 for a new copy. A lot of books, you're right. But ToB is exorbitantly expensive.

Your best bet would be your local staples or...Fedex office? is that what they call kinko's these days? But yeah, those would probably be your best bet. Cost shouldn't be too bad, probably more expensive than the book was when it came out, though if you're willing to print in black and white you'd save a lot.

You also may want to consider only printing portions of the book, some of the stuff in it like the legacy weapons and monsters you could probably skip entirely.

Dragonsfoot (http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/) has a stickied thread (I believe in the Workshop, but I'm at work and can't check) with step-by-step instructions on how to bind your printed pdf. I think there are options for hardbound or softbound. Certainly worth a look, and probably cheaper than Staples/Kinko's/School Supply.

You might also consider looking at the FAQ and/or getting permission from Drive Thru RPG or WotC to print the legally purchased pdf.
