So, laying down to catch a nap before work, and this thought pops into my head. How can something be 'new and improved'? After all, if something is new, then there can't be something like an older product, concept or whatever already existing to be improved upon, right? So, it must be one or the other. And now that I've released it from my head, maybe my brain will quiet down and let me catch a few winks.

First off: :smalltongue: Your mind appears to be a wonderful place.

1) It sounds catchy. It grabs people's attention and says "look at our product: it's so cool, and you should buy it!"

2) If you improve an old object, you then have a new version of an old object. This means that it is a new product that is based off of, and probably very similar to, an old object.

I think that depends on how much you read into the word "new". For example, if you talk about "the new iPhone", it's "new" because this particular model didn't exist before, but it still follows a direct line of continuity from the old phone (it's a modified version of the previous model), so it makes sense to call it "improved".

In marketing, this is referred to as the "New Tide" strategy. It derives the name from the fact that Tide detergent has been marketed as being "New Tide" since it's debut.
