I'm pretty awful at making up names for things, but I recently stumbled upon a fun little site that can occasionally come up with cool ideas:

Anagram generator (http://www.mbhs.edu/%7Ebconnell/cgi-bin/anagram.cgi)

For instance, I typed in the name of my roommate, and one of the anagrams it came up with was 'bracken sword.' I immediately created an intelligent sword, known as the Bracken Sword, that came under his character's possession. The best part is, he doesn't realize that it's an anagram for his real name. I keep telling him how he hasn't uncovered the true secret of the Bracken Sword, and it keeps compelling him to gather as much information concerning this ancestral blade of great power.

It also can create decent character names. My real name produced "Gules Hilton," currently a character in a Shadowrun game I'm in, as well as "Glen Hi Lotus," a monk in a future Forgotten Realms campaign I'll be participating in.

Anyway, try it out and see if you can come up with cool sounding magic items, character names, or other such things. It can surprise you.
