View Full Version : (IC) 5e Lost Mine of Phandelver

For the past few days you have been escorting a wagon of supplies for your friend Gundren Rockseeker. He came to you in Neverwinter, offering you 10 gold each to bring it to Phandelever, a small settlement located to the southeast of Neverwinter. He did not explain much, only saying he and his brothers found "something big", before quickly riding off with his associate Sildar Hallwinter.

Your trip down the Triboar Trail has been long and uneventful, but you are aware of the potential dangers along the road. You check your maps and know that Phandelver is half-day's ride to the south, and at your current pace you will arrive sometime around noon.

Good time to introduce characters, and who's driving and such.

Telren, an older gentleman with a thin gray beard, sits on the front of the wagon, handling the horses.

We're nearing our arrival. Few hours, going to get there at noon.

Thank you, Telren, Othar Tryggvassen booms out, his voice resonating across his broad frame. You hear that, chaps? Just a few hours, and it'll be time for some adventure! Did I ever tell you about the time I was adventuring in the Drake Fens to rescue three princesses?

"No, you definitely haven't told that story to us three times already. Please, regale us with this surely stunning tale," said Kamsif in a voice dripping so heavily with sarcasm that anyone who wasn't as full of themself as Othar would have spotted it a mile away. She smiled at him, and laughed. "You should really expand your repertoire of stories, Gentleman Adventurer."

Kamsif Orli was walking next to the wagon, her eyes constantly on the terrain around them. She grinned whenever she noticed an animal. "You know, I should try my hand at painting a scene of this trail some day."

Othar, shut your damn mouth already.

Othar glares at Telren, bur grudgingly closes his mouth.

For a moment.

I would like to see your paintings. I'm sure they'd be as beautiful as you are.

I got decent at it in the monastery, though I'm certainly no Vermaou."

Ha! Beauty is not in a woman's green skin, but in her green heart! Er-wait, no.

He's a hopeless romantic. Don't worry, he doesn't bite-then again, maybe you like that.

Telren, please! There is a lady in earshot! But as I meant to say, you have a brave heart and a quick mind-here you are, seeking adventure rather than staying holed up in some wayside inn. That makes you far more beautiful than any tavern maid with their flighty antics and lily-livered guts. He grins, idiotically and earnestly, upon finishing his speech.

Baalek chuckles at the exchange as he sits in the back to watch the birds. "Ya ought be careful, Othar. Where I come from, the tavern maids would send you packing in a heartbeat for that 'un."

He taps his staff with his index finger before adding "The best ones are just as feisty as the badgers in Cormanthor."

I'll go no more a ro-oving with you fair maid!

A-roving! A-roving! Since rovings been my ru-i-in

Something like that, maybe, Baalek?

Truckley Trueaxe

At this point in his life, Truckley is more beard than dwarf. The ornately braided white hair on his chin loops itself into his sideburns and the rapidly-thinning hair atop his head. There is a splash of color from the sun reflecting off of his pale, blue, eyes. The ancient dwarf had tried walking alongside the wagon, but between his stubby legs and his heavy armor, he had clanked along too slowly and was forced to ride the wagon despite his grumbling to the contrary.

"Ack," he scoffs as one wagon wheel rolls through a ditch and causes the vehicle to tilt, "steady as she goes, children." Children. It was clear that the elder dwarf meant the term to come across paternally, but it was hard not to hear even a bit of condescension in the fact that he continually used it to address just about anyone.

He turns to Baalek, finding solace in the presence of a fellow dwarf. "Say, Baalek, you suppose they use more words on account of their longer vocal cords?"

Concordance
2015-04-17, 11:47 AM
Aigis quietly observes the exchange from its position walking beside the wagon. It still finds conversation awkward, and has remained largely silent over these past few days except when spoken to. Having little in common with most people, it is content not to draw attention, though that clearly hasn't gone as intended as of late.

It still isn't entirely certain how it ended up alongside this wagon and this group - though, upon reflection, it supposes it can trust them as much as any, and more than most.

Folds. Vocal folds. If you were a singer, Truckley, you might know that. Other flashes a wry grin at the dwarf. Though I do know a certain Dwarvish mining song...

"Mining song, eh?" Kamsif grins and sings,
"Mining, dark beneath the keep,
Iron and coal, rewards we'll reap,
But remember lest we dig too deep,
And fall into eternal sleep."

Hah! Tis a mining song of brave hearts, not cowardly souls!

Born underground! Suckled from a teat of stone
Raised in the dark! The safety of our mountain home
Skin made iron! Steel in our bones!
We do not fear what lies beneath
We can never dig too deep!

At this, Othar begins pounding on his chest in rhythm to the song.

Othar-you're making a fool of yourself.

Othar scowls at his majordomo, but stops. For the moment.

Baalek cannot help but laugh along at the song. "We must be mighty fine party folk, since all most taller folk remember is that we're short, drunk, and dig holes!" He grins widely to add "One's natural and the next leads to the last, but that's not all we do!"

He turns to his fellow dwarf to remark "And tall folk are as ambitious as a fish what wants wings, friend; They're born with a hankering for gilding the lily!"

"Aye," Truckley says with a gruff nod toward the druid. "And I'll have you know, boyo," he calls out to Othar, "if you spent less time diddling with songbooks and more time studying, you'd know that we're talking about the same thing. Do try not to miss the mine for the gems, son. 'Cords' or 'folds,' my point is that you'd do well to stop and take a breath every once in a while. If you want to experience the rich history of dwarves, why not ask an actual dwarf instead of prattling off what little you know of us? Ugh, dense as an anvil but only half the weight. Children today, no respect...How much longer to this Phandelver?"

From anyone else, such a diatribe would be a sign of scorn and derision, but it seemed to be how Truckley indicated his bizarre grandfatherly care. Were it something beneath him (like an elf), he'd simply screw up his face and sit in stone silence. It's unclear whether it was a dwarven trait or the old man's specific attitude, but Truckley made it clear that being good wasn't always synonymous with being nice.

Baalek chuckles before a soft admonishment. "Now, now, he don' mean no harm. A songbird has too much sky to fly fer lookin' at all the ground." he winks at the "Gentleman Adventurer" for the pointed remark. "Though perhaps you might disagree, brother Trueaxe?"

Interrupting your conversation, Telren stops the wagon and turns to Othar
"Othar, there are dead horses in the center of the road."
He points foward, and you see two brown horses lying on the path, covered in black arrows and dried blood.

The horses lay 40ft in front of the stopped wagon, right after a bend in the road. The treeline is very close at this part of the road, with a steep enbankment and a dense mass of plants on both sides.

X'yriss was walking by the warforged. She was listening to her "comrades" as they started singing. She was here because she needed that payment and was hoping that the others was still alert to danger, only a small way to go. As the singing of the dwarf and Half-Elf goes, she started to dream of a mine: "At least i would not be out in the sun..." As she replaced her hood on her Head she heard the warning of Kamsif, she started looking around readying her hand crossbow.

"What do I have to share?" Truckley clucks in disdain. "Oh, not much, lassie, only about three centuries of history and tradition. But please, continue to make rhymes about how my kin are all drunks and miners. Yes, yes, 'beard' rhymes with 'weird,' we've not heard that one. And 'ale' with 'pale,' so you can jab us for not getting enough bleeding sunlight. When I was but a shortbeard, such outright disrespect would never--" The rant was cut short by the sight in the road.

"Ack, that smells like a roadblock. Bleeding bandits probably holding up passing merchants," Truckley says grimly. He stands in his place on the wagon, using the slightly higher elevation to peer around. As he scans, he draws his crossbow from his back. Eyeing the treeline, he looks for any sign of an ambush.

As Othar investigates, he notices that these horses belonged to Gundren and Sildar. The horses were looted of everything.
As everyone turns their eyes to the treeline, they fail to see the six goblins hiding. The goblins jump from their hiding places and attack. Four surround Kamsif and Othar, three moving foward and attempting to knock down and restrain Othar, while the other one attacks Kamsif with his scimitar. Another two come out of hiding, firing arrows at Telren and Truckley

Othar is knocked down by the goblins push, but manages to roll out of the way of anothers goblins scimitar.
A goblin slashes his scimitar across Kamsif's chest
Telren takes an arrow to his stomach, falling off his seat onto the ground.
Truckley barely manages to raise his shield in time to catch the arrow.

Reacting immediately to the ambush, Aigis draws its sword and charges towards Othar and Kamsif. With its shield, it forces the goblin threatening both its allies back, before moving forward to further deter two of its foes.

In an inhuman, unearthly echo, rusted with disuse, it says to the pair, "f-fall back to, the wagon. I will, c-cover your retreat."

Aigis moves 5 squares (25 feet) to P10 and shoves the goblin in Q11 back 5 feet to R12: [roll0]
Then, Aigis uses its last 5 feet of movement to move to Q11, possibly taking an OA. From there, it will use its reaction to make an melee attack (granted by the Sentinel feat) against whichever of the goblins that makes an attack at Othar or Kamsif.

"Ack," Truckley grunts as the hired help falls unconscious. "Time to get to work," he says matter-of-factly to Baalek as he nonchalantly deflects the incoming arrow with his shield and hops out of the wagon. Kneeling down to the driver, the old dwarf traces the trajectory of the arrow in the man and slowly pulls it out. He's careful not to tear the wound open; it wasn't going to bring the man around, but at least it would stop him from dying until they could sort this mess out.

Noting that its allies have no intention of falling back, Aigis risks taking a blow from the goblin before it in order to intercept the two heading towards the wagon. Charging between the two goblins, it guards its left side with its shield while taking a swing at the foe to its right.

Aigis moves 20 feet (3 squares left and 1 diagonally left and down) to L11, potentially taking an OA from the goblin still in Q11.
It then attacks goblin 3 in K11: [roll0] [roll1]
Depending on how much damage it takes from the OA, I might roll in the OOC thread to Second Wind with my bonus action.
Again, Sentinel allows Aigis to make an melee attack with its reaction at any of the goblins it threatens that makes an attack against any of its other allies, and any OAs it lands reduces its target's remaining speed to 0.
