If I have an improved Familiar that has rules for advancement, can I have it at the highest hit die it can?

Example: Get a Mirror Mephit with improved familiar. It can be advanced up to 10 Hit Die. Can I have a mephit with 10 Hit Die?

No. A familiar uses the basic statistics for its kind, except as noted in the ability that grants it.
