The sleepy village of Heldren has rarely seen so much excitement or concern. Hunters from the nearby Border Wood speak of unnaturally cold weather at the height ofsummer that descended on the forest just days ago. Heavy snow followed, and those who returned spoke of an uneasy presence in the woods, as well as new, dangerous predators. No one knows what this event means, but the town's soothsayer, Old Mother Theodora, claims dark times lie ahead.

As if in proof of that dire prophecy, a badly wounded mercenary arrived in town yesterday, claiming to be a bodyguard of Lady Argentea Malassene. He told the village council that the noblewoman's escort came under attack by bandits and strange, wintry creatures near the edge of the Border Wood. He alone escaped, and Lady Argentea was dragged away into the forest. Now the townsfolk cast fearful eyes toward the snowy forest, worried what else might emerge to threaten their peaceful village.

Recent arrivals to the town of Heldren catch the eyes of those who reside there, their attire and attitudes marking them as people who have survived in the wider world. In the Silver Stoat, Heldren's only bar, these strangers have gathered, in search of a warm meal, drink and bed. The evening has only just begun, and the air is already full of speculation about the wounded mercenary and his role in the events that occurred. Describe what your character is doing while they are in the Silver Stoat.

A girl at the bar wears simple plain, white traveler's garb, but cut so low that it's hard to say if there is a "neck" line. She appears to have stowed her things somewhere, as the only things on her person are a belt with various pouches about her waist and a glass of red wine held in a delicate hand wearing lace gloves. Her skin as white as snow, hair dark and shimmering as a raven's wing, she laughs with pale lips that reveal a dazzling smile. No doubt the drink was bought by the gentleman she is sharing conversation with, some local yokel in thick woolen clothes, that sort of poor but charming appearance about him. She whispers something indiscernible to the rest of the bar above the clatter into his ear, and they both laugh. Then, with a light touch on his arm and a small smile of sympathy, she gets up and makes her way to a cozy unoccupied armchair by the fire, noting the rejected man's lingering eyes. She looks to one of the people sitting nearby and takes a sip of the red wine. "New to town, mate?" she asks with a hint of a smile.

Tefkros

Tefkros has been sitting in the sleepy town for some days. Too many. Villagers here mutter about dire times, the weather and their neighbours. But that is what villagers do, all around the world.

People are silly. People are closed minded. People do not know what horrors lie in the closet.

Drinking as much as he can, muttering and scowling, eating like there is no tomorrow -it may well not be- Tefkros has created a small space around him where few like to be. Tefkros notices but shrugs. He has no illusions about his charm.

Thus, when a woman of outstanding charm sits near him and talks to him, Tefkros freezes for a fraction of a second, as his brain tries to address the new situation. Hastily cleaning the crumbs from his tunic, he makes an unsuccessful attempt to address the chronic slovenliness that seems to affect him. Not very successfully.

"Yes, new to town. I am from the other side of the world actually. Linnorm lands. Waiting for a caravan to assemble, to leave this place. I have half a mind to go search for this wounded mercenary, to see if there is work that is needed"

Then with a frown, almost like an accusation.

"And you? Are you from here?"

Tough, weathered appearance, looks like he was raised in the wilds. Now here's a brute can help a girl out.

She gives a light, fluttering laugh. "Gods, no. Just passing through on my way north, but when I find one, I try to sleep in a warm bed for a night or two. Tell me more about this work. A girl has to make a living, you know," she says with another smile in Tefkros's direction. The road ahead is long, and a bit of extra gold may ease the journey some.

Standing on a bar stool that's been set up beside the fire is a small figure dressed in the finery of a halfling noble. His mostly-vestigial wings flap behind him for emphasis as he strikes small dramatic poses atop the stool, reciting poem after poem in common, elven, and occasionally draconic. His white scales glitter in the firelight, though most of them are covered by the purple noble's clothing he wears. It took him a few days to convince the locals in town that he meant no harm and a few more to convince the owner of the Silver Stoat that he could provide entertainment, but now that he's won them over he's been plying his trade for the past several days, spinning epic yarns and reciting the odes that he memorized as a young pup. Yesterday someone bought him dinner as a thank you for his recitation of The Ascencion of Cayden Cailean. It's the nicest thing anyone's done for him since he left home.

Rocky sits at the same table as the fair lady and the man she is speaking to, but neither seems to have noticed. He does not blame them: his head fails to top the table rim and has yet to move an inch or say a single word to anyone, being content with listening to the bard's performance. However, his ears perk up at the mention of work. He rises, standing to his full height on top of the bench and grabs the rim with his hands, hoisting himself up a little more. "Excuse me" he says, waving a hand to catch the attention of the other two, while the tip of a small bow appears from behind his shoulders. "I know it's none of my business, but if you are thinking of going somewhere outside the city I could be of some help. And I could use the coin too. And the company..." he finishes meekly.

Tefkros looks around as the company grows. Not liking anyone has the advantage of being able to work with everyone on the same level. At first, he scowls suspiciously, trying to find the angle. But he then discards the idea. Sometimes, people just wanted company. For some inexplicable reason.

"You misunderstood me lady. I know of no job. I am just saying that a wounded mercenary of a lady's retinue could lead to a bounty or a rescue party or something. Nobles have a tendency to expect to be found."

The bear of a man enters the inn, ducking through the doorway, his green eyes taking int he whole room as he enters. Hearing something about a wounded person and the bizarrely cold weather he walks over to the table of strangers. He carries himself proudly and with confidence and sits at their table, leaning his staff against the wall.

"I care little for titles and not much for coin, but if someone needs help and others are afraid to go into the woods, I will go. Ghost and I would welcome your company."

Rocky is almost thrown up from the rebound when the big man sit on the bench with him. "Whoa, sweet!" he comments. Going about with big folks is always preferable in his experience, and there seems to be an abundance of them lounging in taverns everywhere here on the surface. Go figure. "Hum, just... who's Ghost? Not a literal ghost, right?" he adds with just a little apprehension. There's also an abundance of weirdos hanging around, to be sure.

Wisteria takes another sip of wine as these other characters flock toward her in the typical fashion. She wears a half-smile for the new comers. "Seems like half the town is interested in helping those poor unfortunate souls... for the right price," she adds with a short laugh. "But unless someone is willing to pay, I'm afraid we are barking up the wrong tree. Gentlemen." The beauty stands up at takes her leave, returning to the bar. She signals the barkeep and strikes up a conversation, quietly so as not to arouse suspicion from the others. "Word is highborn ladies aren't lasting long on the road 'round these parts. Heard anything about what a girl can expect to see out there?"

Tefkros looks around as the company dissolves. Some wanted only the money, some wanted only righteousness and some wanted the company. Himself on the hand, he could use all three, in various proportions.

"Settle down there, big man. You just walked in and you are already to go to the woods, alone, without knowing what happened and why? Animals sniff the trail where they hunt. Should we plunder alone?

I say you wait a bit. It seems we are at least four people interested in going, maybe more. We should at least talk with the mercenary, see what the townspeople think. Maybe scouts have already be dispatched.

Coordination. This is how you hunt big games."

The bartender nods her head as Wisteria references the recent capture of Lady Argentea.

I've heard everything from cultists of dead gods to strigoi has been menacing the woods. If you want to know more about the attacks, I would recommend speaking to the mercenary. You'll find him in the Willowbark Apothecary, two doors down. It's next to the barber, and run by a elf named Tesseraea Willowbark.

The group of men at the table are interrupted by a halfling, who wears an eyepatch over his right eye and carries a cane on his right side.

So you fellas are wishin' ta find the young lass tha's been taken?

As the men nod to the affirmative, he subtly glances across the room, then leans in and lowers his voice.

Finishing up a lilting poem about a bear and a maiden fair, Pik Nik leaps off his stool, his wings catching the air and gliding him gracefully to the floor. He walks up to the halfling and the other tall folk and blinks with his strange, draconic eyes. His voice is slightly deeper than one would expect from a creature so small, but nobody is caught off guard by this, given that you've been listening to him recite poetry previously.

"Please allow me to proffer my services in assisting this poor woman. One can only laud the deeds of others for so long before yearning to pen his own."

The kobold sweeps his hat off his head as part of a gracious bow. It's probably the most ridiculous thing you've ever seen.

Throwing back the last few sips of wine in one pull, she leaves the tavern to step into the brisk air and skips down the street to Willowbark Apothecary. The halfling leads the four men outside, to the town square. The town square is empty for the night, its only occupant the large statue in its centre. The statue depicts a beautiful woman, with a peaceful expression upon her face. Her arm is outstretched, in a welcoming gesture. The party moves onto the dirt road, and follows the path for about one hundred feet, where they stop outside a neat house with a well maintained garden in front of it. A sign hanging from a post reads Willowbark Apothecary, and a path made of small stones leads to the entrance. The halfling walks to the front door, then knocks twice and calls out.

It's Ronnisworth. I'm bringing in a few men to see the mercenary.

He opens the door and the party moves inside, to a small room. From there, they are lead to another room in the back, where a female elf tends to the wounded Ulfen mercenary. Bandages cover his body, though some have become deep crimson from the blood that seeps from his wounds. His fingers, toes and nose have taken on a blackish hue, and cuts and bruises of various sizes cover his body. The elf looks at the assembled men, and greets them softly.

I'm Tesseraea Willowbark. This man was injured only a day ago by the Border Wood. His wounds seem to indicate-

A knock on the door interrupts Tesseraea. The sound of a door opening is heard, then a woman's voice calls out, Hello?.

Out the back here. Ronnisworth replies. Into the small infirmary walks the young woman from the Silver Stoat, who greets the group. The noise awakens the mercenary.

Name's Yuln Oerstag, from the north. I'm an Ulfen mercenary, was hired to protect Lady Argentea from bandits and whatnot that live outside of civilisation. I hear that you may be leading a rescue party. All things right I would go with you, but my body is not willing. My ancestors would ridicule my lack of valour, fleeing the fight rather than fighting to the bitter end. But I faced enemies that even the greatest warriors in the Linnorm Kingdoms have faltered against, and I think I slew one or two before they dragged Lady Argentea away.

Stepping outside the inn, Rocky takes the time to cast a light spell on the tip of one of his arrows. Not that it needs it, of course: there's light pouring out of the windows of nearby buildings, and his eyes are better then most even in complete darkness. Still, he does not like darkness, nor those who dwell in it. As the street brightens a little around the group, he notice the massive cat strolling towards them. If not for Aevien's explaination, Rocky would have stepped back inside already. Instead, he looks at the beast with fascination: he'd love to have one for himself, but he's never been great at dealing with animals...

...

He follows the group to the apothecary and what appears to be Ms Willowbark tending to the wounded mercenary. He listens to the man's tale before commenting. "I'm sure your ancestors won't mind too much." he says, trying to sound reassuring. He does not pat the man on his head, though it feels it would be good manners to do so. "But Mr. Yuln, if you do not mind me asking, can you tell us where did you get attacked, and by what?"

Tefkros looks at the big cat sideways. Only druids kept pets so large. There were worst people to have around in the woods, for sure.

When they get into the apothecary's cot and the mercenary talks, Tefkros stiffens. The Linnorm Lands! His home, a long time ago.

He looks better at the bluish toes. were those frostbites?. In the middle of the summer, in Taldor? When he speaks, his voice is gruff and he looks elsewhere.

"I am also very curious, where did you get these frostbites, in the middle of summer."

Ah, this lot again. Wisteria masks her disappointment at being scooped and flashes a bright smile at everyone. She kneels down by the soldier in a show of sympathy. "Oh, you brave, strong soldier! Don't worry yourself. You gave more for the cause than any reasonable person should be expected to." The changeling then looks up at the elf with her blue and purple eyes. "Hello, you must be Tesseraea. My name is Wisteria. Will these wounds heal? I can apply a spell if it might be helpful." She runs her lace-gloved fingers through the soldier's hair as she asks, "Is there a chance that the Lady Argentea is alive? Do you have any idea where they may have taken her?"

The Ulfen looks to the group.

At first we thought they were just bandits - outlaws who prey on travellers from the safety of the woods. We easily held them off. But then the winter touched joined the battle, and it quickly turned against us. My people speak of the cold fey of the north all the time, but I never expected them this far south. They are sprites who have sworn themselves to the Winter Witches of Irrisen, and they took part in the Winter War against my people. Legends say they have a sliver of ice in their hearts, and their touch bears the cold bite of winter. The attack happened about six miles south of here, and should be easily visible.

Tessearaea nods at Wisteria's comments.

His cuts and bruises should heal, but the frostbite is trickier. It may heal, but that it is of magical origin means that they may not heal back without some sort of magic to fix it. You can try to heal him if you wish.

Yuln turns to Wisteria.

I have no idea whether the Lady remains alive or not. All I can say is that if the winter touched took her, it means that the Winter Witches want her. And no good will come from it if they want her. They dragged her into the forest, back through the ice and snow. I was able to follow them for a while, but they were too many, and drove me off. I barely escaped with my life, and rode here to seek help.

Pik Nik recalls a tale about Oberjarl Thorin Oerstag, who led an army of Ulfen to battle against an undead warlord. The battle was long and fierce, and many men died, including Thorin himself, who met his end at the swords of a dozen mercenaries, who were forced to climb over the sea of bodies that surrounded the Oberjarl. It is said that the man did not fall to the wounds until he had slain every man whose sword has tasted his blood.

Tefkros' wandering gaze focuses sharply when the mercenary mentions the Ice Fey, and a muttered "Burn to ashes!" escapes his lips.

"Rest assured. We will find your mistress" and then in Skald "Your honor will be avenged".

IndianaO'Grimes

Yuln points to a longsword by his bed.

The winter touched fear fire and cold iron. That sword is cold iron, and I would be willing to give it to you if you need. I would dare say that Lady Argentea would be not opposed to giving you some sort of payment if you find her alive. Otherwise, you could take whatever you find from the caravan. I'm sure that there is plenty of valuables that weren't looted by the bandits.

Wisteria's touch heals some of the mercenary's wounds, but he still looks the worse for wear. Tesseraea moves to take over from the changeling, and she interjects.

I have some alchemist's fire, though I can only give you two bottles. They're on that shelf to the right of you, bard.

The halfling Ronnisworth steps forward and adds.

If you need an extra hand, then I volunteer. I think that I know where the attack took place, and I know the Border Wood.

Who knows what valuable skills these others might bring to the table when it came down to it. She hands him one of the vials, keeping the other tucked carefully in her belt pouch. Ronnisworth bids farewell to Yuln and Tesseraea. He leads the party out of the back room and through the front door, onto the dirt road. He turns to the adventurers.

I just need to get a few things from home. I'll meet you at the south of the town square in two minutes.

Then he walks off into the night. The adventurers walk east, towards the town square, then move south. They reach the end of the town square, where the light does not reach as far, and wait. Barely a minute goes by before Ronnisworth emerges from the darkness, wearing a backpack, with a quarterstaff tied to the top, a short sword through his belt and a pipe in his mouth. He jerks his head behind him, to the south.

Let's move. The mercenary said that the attack was about six miles south, which will take us two hours. By the time we reach the caravan, it will be close to dawn.

The trip takes slightly over an hour at walking pace. Near the forest, the temperature grows noticeably colder. The road ahead is littered with debris and the corpses of slain humans and horses. The stench of death ever so slightly permeates in the area. A carriage stands in the roadway, its team of horses missing or cut free, while another overturned carriage lies sprawled and broken next to the tree line. To the south, more bodies have fallen around what appears to be a statue of ice. A snowy trail leads deeper into the forest.

The changeling grabbed her things from the inn before meeting Ronnisworth for their departure, so she now sports a standard travel pack and a sling on one hip, in addition to the cold iron mace, as well as an armored coat worn over her simple tunic. On occasion, as they walk through the quiet woods, her eyes will dart to the side, but quickly return to place, as though she may have heard something.

On arriving at the carnage, she stops in her tracks for a second, running a lace-gloved hand through her black hair. While others are keeping a lookout and searching bodies and caravans, she is instantly drawn toward the statue of ice. She holds the mace in her right hand, leaning it back against her shoulder, as she closes in on the thing to investigate.

Aevien picks several berries on the trip, all of which he recognises as being useful for his magic. At the massacre site, he notices that all the bodies have been stripped of armour and weapons. He notices a path leading into the woods, and it appears that little or no attempt has been made to hide it. The overturned carriage has several boxes strewn near it, clear signs of looting having taken place. The rear carriage is emblazoned with Taldan heraldry and covered in arrows from the battle. A spear has been shoved through the doorhandles to prevent the door from being opened. Muffled sounds of movement come from inside the carriage. The statue seems to be the frozen form of a Taldan captain, who is wearing a breastplate with Taldan heraldry depicted on it, and wielding a longsword of magnificent quality in his dominant hand. Various chunks of his body have been ripped out and spread around at his feet, encased in slow-melting ice. Ghost detects the smell of various humans, and senses a strange scent that he has not smelled before.

Tefkros looks over the massacre site and notices the various aspects that Aevien has also.

Rocky notices the same things that everyone else has noticed about the massacre site.

Wisteria notices everything that everyone else has noticed.

Pik Nik stands still and unassuming in the middle of the massacre scene while the others investigate. He's not a particularly perceptive type, and his skills are ill-suited for this type of work. At the muffled sounds coming from the carriage, however, he perks up and darts towards the doors, trying to get them open.

"Here now, it seems someone might have survived!"

It is only after climbing all the way to the top of the carriage that Rocky realizes there are muffled sounds coming from within. "Hey, there's someone inside here" warns the others. "Perhaps some of you might want to see who, and maybe let them out?" As for himself, he keeps his post, weapon in hand, against possible ambushes. It would be quite ironic to be ambushed twice in the same spot...

No, Pik Nik wouldn't need to make a strength check if he was slipping the spear out, but if he was trying to open the door without taking out the spear he would have to make one.

As Tefkros slides the spear out of the door handles, he hears the shuffling stop. He opens the door gently, but a force pushes against him and the door flies open. Out stumbles an undead monstrosity, his arms outstretched towards Tefkros. Wounds cover his body, but no blood leaks from them, and the clothes that he had worn previously are rotting and starting to hang off him. Behind it, a second zombie stumbles out of the carriage, the stench of rotting flesh following the two undead.

So, zombies attack. Do you need to roll initiative for this, or does it count as a surprise round? FYI Grognard, to open the door was counted as a move action, so what does that mean for combat? Sorry about the questions, but I haven't played Pathfinder much before.

Pik Nik springs backwards in surprise when the zombies are revealed. He was truly expecting the carriage's occupant to be the woman they sought and not some undead abominations! Quickly regaining his composure, he begins to recite a famous rallying speech attributed to Iomadae herself. It's famous not only for its association with the pre-deity herself, but because she allegedly gave the speech to bolster her comrades against an approaching horde of undead.

Pik Nik's ballad echoes across the site, causing feelings of pride and courage in the chests of those who hear it. As Pik Nik begins his speech, Rocky throws a vial, which hits the rear zombie and shatters, covering the zombie in a fiery liquid. The flames burn hot enough to melt the skin it touches, and soon the bones of the creature are visible in places where the fire dances.

Meanwhile, the zombie attacking Tefkros lunges, and attempts to crash into the tracker. Its attack falls short, and Tefkros swiftly steps back. Aevien moves in, swinging his staff down onto the dead creature's skull. A loud crack is heard, as the blow finds its target. Tefkros quickly follows up with a shot from his arrow, but the bolt harmlessly skids past the zombie, doing nothing more than scratching the creature's shoulder.

The zombie by the carriage staggers forward, then lunges for Aevien, the closest to its jaws. The attack similarly falls short, doing nothing more than bringing the zombie closer to Aevien's staff.

Meanwhile, Wisteria snaps out of the confusion caused by the voices in her head, and turns to see the fight unfolding. Wielding her heavy mace, she charges at the zombie that tried to attack and swings, aiming for the creature's skull. The blow collides, and a sickening crunch is heard as the zombie's skull is crushed with the force of the blow. It drops to the ground, losing control of its limbs.

Hey, yeah, I was waiting for the zombies to go before me, and haven't had a chance to post after Indiana until now.

While the rest of the group was gathered around the carriage fighting off the walking dead, Wisteria had her back turned to them, still facing the frozen captain. Suddenly the voices in her head were louder than usual, and she shook her head to try to clear her mind. Then the sounds of battle hit her. The changeling whirls around to realize that the others were under attack. From undead, no less. Was the call purposefully trying to distract her? In any case, time to join the fray. Seeing Tefkros backing away from the undead so he can use his bow, she figures that makes a good target.

The search of the carriage reveals a box full of jewellery that the bandits missed. Inside is the Lady's signet ring, a pair of earrings, a set of pearl-inlaid bracelets, assorted gold and silver necklaces and a sapphire pendant. Everything else inside the carriage has been either ransacked by the bandits or knocked about enough by the zombies that it is damaged beyond repair.

After the group has searched the carriage, Ronnisworth points to the trail leading into the forest. The trail likely leads to the Lady. We best be following it as quick as we can, though we should be on the lookout for more traps.

The only track the group can find that leads into the forest is visible through the snow. The track is wide enough for the group to travel in single file.

For anyone in the group that understands Draconic, you notice that, in addition to the change in vocabulary, Pik Nik's attitude and demeanor have lost every ounce of their weird confidence as he plays the part of grovelling slave.

Wisteria stands wide-eyed, trembling slightly at the encounter, inches away from the jaws of a... dragon? Wyrm? She holds very still, hoping not to incite the beast's wrath.

The tatzylwyrm is silent for a few seconds, as it ponders Pik Nik's words. Finally, it speaks. Very well. You are of draconic descent, and for that I will allow you and your allies to pass. The warm bows, and moves back to its hole.

Rocky keeps silent as they leave the scene, but once they are just out of earshot he comments with delight "That was sooooo cool!"

Tefkros

Tefkros unclenches his bow and looks suspiciously at the retreating worm. Things cannot have gone well, could they?

Well. The world is full of surprises. As they move away, he turns at Pik.

"That was well done. I did not understand anything of the gibberish, but I would not have believed it if I had not seen it"

The group continues along the path. Feathered bundles and strange fetishes hang from the lowest branches of the trees in this part of the forest, swaying and shifting in the wind. All are stuck with small pins holding pieces of leather bound around them. While the group do not see anything out of the ordinary, they feel malevolent entities watching them.

Roll perception checks. Also add 600 xp for dealing with the Tatzylwyrm.

How bow ready, his head moving around, Tefkros also continues on. He looks at the fetishes with a frown -nothing good comes out from them, ever- but he keeps on

"Oh, I'm sure it's not as bad as it looks... and feels..." says Rocky, his voice dropping steadily into a whimper. Even so, he looks around for things that might prove him wrong, bow at the ready.

Mace ever in hand, Wisteria eyes the fetishes warily, being sure not to touch them. "Even so, looks pretty bad..." she says in response to Rocky's optimism.

Pik Nik gets to his feet and bows graciously to the tatzylwyrm as it lets them pass. <"Your generosity this day will not be forgotten. May your horde grow a hundred times as numerous as your scales!">

Once the group is well-passed the tatzylwyrm, Pik Nik begins to sing and is practically skipping as he walked. "I'm sorry if you couldn't understand most of that. He was really quite pleasant, when you get right down to it."

The group notices nothing out of the ordinary about their surroundings. The fetishes have no real religious significance, but upon closer inspection can be seen to be the corpses of crows, hung from the trees in a morbid display of cruelty. A trio of tiny arrows suddenly fly from the trees, aimed at Wisteria. They miss, harmlessly thudding into the snow beside the group. Inspection of the forest reveals something flitting between the trees, three creatures only about the size of a small bird.

I've taken a suggestion from the other group and decided to roll your initiatives then average them against enemies, just so that combat flows quicker. The group goes first, and you can post in any order.

Contrary to most other people, Rocky does not associate small size with harmlessness. He readies a shot with his bow, to be fired in case of further acts of aggression from either group.
