If movies have taught me anything, it's that you never call Michael J. Fox's Marty McFly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_to_the_Future_%28franchise%29) "chicken," you don't call Charlize Theron's Mary Embrey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hancock_%28film%29) "crazy," and you never, ever call Vincent Price's Ratigan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Mouse_Detective) a "rat."

There are some things you say that can drive an otherwise mellow character into fits of convulsive (if occasionally impotent) rage (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BerserkButton). These can be humorous, shocking, or anywhere in between, and can give surprising depth to a character.

I told you that, to ask you this: What berserk buttons have you used with your characters? And how well did it go over?

Come on, share your story. What's the matter? Chicken?

I had a wizard with a pony familiar and the pony had this berserk button of absolutely hating being thought of as a pack mule for the party. Not even my wizard was allowed to sit on her without her express permission (and really, he'd just summon a phantom steed anyway). Pretty much every party member was kicked at least once, even my wizard. Was pretty funny and that pony was one of the more memorable characters on that campaign.

I'm currently playing as a Halfling barbarian named Korren Yail that used to be human but got cursed by a wizard to be short. So he REALLY hates wizards. There was this one time that the party got to the end of a cave system, and the BBEG was a caster that was slinging spells at the party. My barbarian stayed hidden in the shadow until the time was right, then he charged, ghetto-critted, and decapitated the wizard. If I was playing any sane character, I would have nonlethally KOed him and interrogated him, as was our mission. But, as I told the other players: "You don't understand. Korren *really* hates wizards."

Halfling paladin who despised being called short. And ogre once called him a shrimp, and found himself pinned to the ground holding in his stomach underneath a few hundred pounds of velociraptor, and 50 lbs of halfling. Granted, we were in the middle of a fight anyway, but that one singled himself out (and became the victim of a couple of really lucky crits).

Had a half-silver dragon paladin who would get extremely upset if someone implied he was a white dragon. His backstory was that his parents were killed because some idiot adventurers with no ranks in Knowledge: Arcane heard there was a dragon that breathed frost and immediately thought it was a white and hunted it down. They killed the dragon (his mother) and her champion (his father) while he was in town learning the law of the kingdom.
