View Full Version : Evil Flying Mounts?

OK, trying to find a list of all the animals / beasts trainable as flying mounts. In particular, ones that might fit in better in an evil game.

There's the old staples of hippogriff, pegasus, griffon, wyvern, etc. But none really say "I'm a flying Blackguard... prepare to meet my maker."

Any thoughts?

Nightmare.

Also, templates. Half red dragon rhino, anyone?

Nightmare immediately comes to mind. Flying, Flaming Horse of evil doom.

For the cruder of thought...Succubus

Nightmare seems nice, the characters are going to be level 12ish. Sound ok for that level range?

I can very easily imagine a Fiendish Hippogriff...

...

I can also very easily imagine the Succubus now, thank you very much JellyPooga

Slasrath or some such name from the Fiend Folio. Giant flying worm thing.

Or (if you're small), dire bat.

Only because the question needs to be asked . . . . . . .

How do you mount a Succubus? :smalleek:

You can mount as a move action or as a free action (if you make a DC 20 ride check).

So it only takes 0-3 seconds to get where you want.

What about a Wyvern? Large creature, flying, dragon-like, and is very evil looking. It's a CR 6, only one higher than the Nightmare. Not to say that the Nightmare isn't a great idea... :smallwink:

Besides the half dragon template to add wings to your monster (allowing you to make your own flying mount), consider the winged creature template from savage species

Skeletral Dragon template from Draconomicon. For still living dragons, Fang dragons make awesome evil mounts as do those extraplanar dragons from Carcerai.

Fiendish Direbat is pretty awesome as well. Also you can in theory ride a Cornugon.

At level 12, a PC with the leadership feat can (with appropriate mods and charisma) have a 10th level cohort. The Nightmare has 6 HD and a +4(cohort) LA --> 10th level cohort.

A match made in... er... Baator?

Yeah, the Nightmare does seem to be the way to go here. We're looking at an evil variation on the Griffon Rider from Unapproachable East, and this might be just the ticket.

Thanks all!

Half fiend template is also pretty good to shove on things that *should* have wings.

Spider Eater or Manticore would seem appropriate for an evil campaign, adding templates as necessary.

I still think a fire breathing, scaly, flying rhinocerous would be awesometacular.

I have only three words for you: half-dragon ooze.

A half-green-dragon elder black pudding, perhaps.

Pure force of awesome.

And a magic rug of acid immunity.

In fact, acid immunity all 'round might be a good idea.

Nightmare, yes, and the templates were made to do awesome things like fire-breathing, flying scaly rhinos.

Also, the good ol' Black Dragon comes to mind for me as well.

The succubus, on the other hand, has a different opinion on it only taking 3 seconds...

Arms and Equipment has a little Ooze-riding bubble item in it somewhere, in the mounts section.

A Half-Fiend anything would work just fine. Half-dragon Pegasus would be nicely corrupted.

Isn't that how Drakkens happened?

When I read the thread title, I thought it said "Evil Flying Monkeys".

Which, come to think of it, would make a pretty good mount for a Tiny character. If you're small, you may need to upgrade to "Evil Flying Orangutans, though.

A nightmare is decent as a cohort... at that level, it's a bit low on HD, but next level you can start giving it class levels. Unarmed varient Swordsage is a good plan.
