I think you should check out cartographer's guild (http://www.cartographersguild.com/) if you haven't already. It's an entire forum based around making RPG maps, with lots of tutorials for different styles and effects. Pretty amazing place.

I was drawing them for awhile, but after I decided that took much time I stopped fighting the grid and embraced it.

Players like it too. I use the Final Fantasy tiles for battlemaps. The best part of NES tiles is how simple and extensible they can be.
